Chapter 83
She heard a loud clicking noise, but nothing happened.
“A blank,” Don Abano declared. “Elena Vitale has survived!”
The other mafia members began discussing their judgment. It was a formality really. Elena Vitale had won the game of Russian Roulette–everyone knew what that meant.
Massimo stopped listening the second Jacob Abano declared Elena’s safety.
He wanted to run to her. He wanted to sweep her into his arms and ensure that she was really, truly okay. Elena had a nasty habit of letting her stubbornness outweigh her safety–even if she looked alright, Massimo couldn’t take her appearance at face value.
But Massimo was the Mafia King, the Don of All Dons. He had a lifetime’s worth of practice of ignoring his desires until they faded away. Until all that was left was duty and responsibility to uphold the underground criminal network so many past mafia men had carefully built.
Even so, it was hard to sit still as the people who had sentenced his doctor to die now suddenly were on her side. All of them insisted that she–and more importantly, Massimo–were in the right.
Massimo never hated tradition as much as he did in those moments.
But he recalled Elena’s words as she calmly waited for her life to potentially end.
“If you intervene, that would just make you look irrational and let Tyler claim more power–which would make everything worse for everyone, right?”
Elena had put her life on the line just for the chance to stop Tyler. The least Massimo could do was honor her grit and determination. He couldn’t squander this opportunity she had got him.
With both his training and Elena’s words agreeing, Massimo kept silent as the mafia men finished with the rest of their discussions and pointless ceremony.
The second it was over though, Massimo was at Elena’s side.
Elena immediately smiled. “Congratulations. Don Morello can’t even step foot in your territory without breaking mafia law now.”
Massimo nodded. He didn’t care to talk about Tyler right now. He wanted to make sure Elena was alright.
“You performed well,” Massimo said. “How are you feeling?”
“Relieved,” Elena replied simply with a sigh. “That’s one major problem taken care of.”
Massimo frowned. Did she truly not understand what he was asking? Despite his lack of conversational skills, Elena usually understood him very well.
“I don’t care about Tyler,” he insisted. “You just played Russian Roulette and pointed a gun at your temple. Are you okay?”
Elena borrowed one of Massimo’s favorite gestures–she waved her hand dismissively at Massimo, hiding her face with the action. “I’m fine. You should go celebrate this victory with your wife.”
“I don’t see why I should celebrate with a woman I intend to divorce-”
“But you’re not divorced yet,” Elena insisted, a smile plastered on her face. “Go to her. Have fun.”

Before Massimo could further protest, Elena left.
Elena stayed in her room for the entire day. Despite the happy atmosphere, Elena didn’t feel joyful.
She couldn’t stop thinking of the click of the gun. She couldn’t stop thinking about how everyone on this cruise was ready to let her die in the name of tradition. That her word wasn’t good enough on its own to prove her innocence and Tyler’s wickedness.
Elena knew it was over, but she still felt uneasy. It didn’t help that she would have to pretend to be polite and nice to the very same mafia members who had insisted she play a pointless, dangerous game of luck. That she would have to smile and laugh with the very people who had called for her death.
So Elena stayed in her room until the late evening. The cruise was set to arrive back at port in less than two hours.
Tired of wallowing in her self–pity and isolation, Elena decided to get some fresh air. All the mafia members would no doubt be partying in one of the ship’s many ballrooms until the ship finally docked. Elena walked to the deck, imagining Aria and Massimo dancing among the crowd of mafia members.
Aria was a great dancer. Elena could still recall how well Massimo guided Elena’s own clumsy steps at her first real mafia party. The two of them would easily steal everyone’s attention.
That was okay. It was great even. Massimo deserved to get good attention from the rest of the mafia world after all that happened today.
That’s at least what Elena repeated to herself as she leaned against one of the railings. The ocean was dark and beautiful–a view that would’ve fully occupied her thoughts if her day had been less exciting. As it was, Elena was so wrapped up in her thoughts, she didn’t notice someone sneaking up to her side until he finally spoke up.
