Chapter 95

Massimo rushed out of the mafia meeting. Luca had texted him an important update–his men had found the license plate and tracked down the car Tyler had driven away Elena and Aria in. Massimo had only been cautious plugging in the address correctly in his car’s GPS.
In everything else, Massimo prioritized speed. He knew the state of New York like the back of his hand–and he was using every side street and shortcut to his advantage.
That didn’t change the fact he got there much later than Luca and his men–they had the advantage of a head start. Or the fact that the car had been ditched on the side of the road–Tyler wasn’t so stupid as to leave it parked at whatever hideout he was staying at.
Massimo had to admit it. He was running out of ground that he could cover on his own.
“Once you’re done running tests,” Massimo told Luca, “make sure the police find this truck. Discretely.”
Massimo didn’t want to get the cops involved, but there was a chance they would something that mafia resources missed. If it got Elena home sooner, Massimo could overlook the small bit of lost pride at having to rely on outsiders.
Elena and Aria had only been declared missing by the police yesterday. That meant the cops were more likely to jump on any clue, rather than just chalk it up as two friends running away. A lead like the truck would at least apply more pressure to Tyler–which could make him act sloppy enough to slip up.
Massimo was surprised that Elena hadn’t been reported missing earlier. Her husband, Joshua Miller, was a state attorney he had plenty of connections with the police. So why hadn’t he used them?
Massimo opened his phone and pulled up a copy of the police files on the disappearance case of Elena and Aria. At the end of the day, it really didn’t matter why Joshua was slow to act. What mattered was that more people were looking into the case.
Plus with the police records Massimo had obtained from an inside man, the don now had a separate font of information to go through. If he got stuck, Massimo could check on what the police had turned up.
Massimo took a deep breath. He was going to find Elena and Aria.
Back at his family estate, Massimo debated his next steps. It was almost a week since Elena and Aria were abducted.
Should he get the other mafia families involved? It was only a matter of time until word got out that his wife and doctor were missing. Would it be better to tell the story himself that way Massimo could control the narrative and what people would think?
Massimo couldn’t help but remember the hours before Elena’s kidnapping. How she had been forced to play Russian Roulette, but stood her ground. How she stood on the deck of the cruise and looked more beautiful than the nighttime scenery.
“We both know mafia women are treated as trophies or devils.”
That’s what she had told him that night, and Massimo couldn’t argue with that truth. Those mafia heads had treated her like an accessory of his—when they sentenced her to play a deadly game, they held no malice in their hearts. They didn’t see her as an enemy or ally or even a person–she was only a symbol of power.
Massimo frowned. He couldn’t trust the other dons to take the threat of Elena’s life seriously. So telling them about Tyler’s latest crimes wouldn’t be worth the effort.

For all Massimo knew, they would just blame Elena again. Or they would tell Tyler and then the snake could easily hide the women somewhere else.
That settled it. Talking to those outside his immediate family would just waste Massimo’s valuable time. Time he didn’t have to spare.
So what to do instead?
