Chapter 97
Massimo didn’t respond. He walked deeper into his office. There was a phone tracking device he quickly powered on–if he could keep Tyler talking, Massimo would be able to trace where the devil was calling from.
“It’s very simple,” Tyler continued. “Just pick which woman you want to rescue–your wife or your doctor–and I’ll let her return to you.”
“I suppose you kill the other?” Massimo growled into the phone’s receiver.
Tyler laughed darkly. “No, the other I keep—at least until I get bored. You have two hours to make your choice.”
Without another word, Tyler hung up.
Massimo’s tracker had placed Tyler somewhere on the northern border of New York. It was a large area, but within it, Tyler owned a real estate firm. That was likely where Tyler was hiding.
Or it was another trick. Had Tyler known Massimo would trace the call? Had he really anticipated the Mafia King’s every move?
If Massimo and Joshua’s guess of Tyler’s hideout was wrong, Elena and Aria would both be lost forever. If Massimo took Tyler’s deal, he could at least save one of them. But who?
Morally, Massimo knew he should choose his wife Aria. She had saved his grandfather’s life–it would cruel not to return the favor. Furthermore, even though Massimo intended to divorce her, he was still married to her.
If Massimo didn’t pick Aria, he’d become an oath breaker. He would be shattering his promises to always protect his wife. Massimo had signed the marriage contract, which meant he should stick by his vows.
But Elena had fought so hard to escape Tyler. Massimo hated the idea of leaving her with that devil for a minute longer. The very thought of leaving her with him made Massimo’s blood boil.
Massimo sighed and powered down his tracking device. He knew he couldn’t make any decision based solely on his emotions. No matter how he felt inside, he had to act as the unfeeling, untouchable Mafia King.
Mafia took out his phone and called his second–in–command.
“I’ve found new information,” Massimo explained. “And I’ve also come to a decision on what to do.”
For the first time in days, Elena was outside Tyler’s carefully designed cage. He had knocked both herself and Aria unconscious and moved them to a warehouse. Elena didn’t recognize the location, but she was overjoyed to see the afternoon sky peaking through the warehouse’s high windows.
She wanted to get closer, but she couldn’t. Tyler had tied the two women up to individual chairs. Elena’s back was to Aria, so she had no idea how her friend was doing.
Tyler was easier to read. He was in a giddy mood as he gloated to his victims. He gleefully explained the cruel choice he had presented Massimo with–to choose which one of them would live and which one would die.
“Either way,” Tyler enthused, “I make a fool out of the Don of All Dons! I’ll make sure word gets about all that Massimo lost–if rumors aren’t already spreading right now. Everyone will think he’s a terrible, foolish leader.”
“Is that what you were always after?” Elena asked. “You spent all this time, money, and energy to have a chance at making Massimo look bad? You sound like the one who’s pathetic.”
Tyler leaned into Elena’s space. She tried not to flinch. Even if she was scared, she didn’t want Tyler to know it.
Tyler smiled sadly at her. “It really is pity you survived Russian Roulette just to die a few days later. Fate is so
