“Are we going to get on with business, or you just going to gloat?” Massimo growled back impatiently.

“I can do both,” Tyler smiled. “So, which is it going to be? Your wife or your doctor?”

Finally, Massimo’s dark expression brightened for a moment.

Elena wished she didn’t need to hear Massimo’s next words. She knew the Don of All Dons would make the logical choice and save Aria–she was a civilian and his wife. While Massimo’s reputation could recover from losing a mere family doctor, no one would respect a man who had left another kill his wife.

Elena did her best to look away. She may have to hear Massimo’s choice, but she didn’t want to look at him when he spoke. She didn’t want to risk seeing pity in his eyes.

As Elena turned away from the two men, she saw figures deftly sneaking in from the warehouse’s back door. People she had treated before. Those were Massimo’s men–Elena even saw Luca briefly smile at her as he and the handful of other men got closer and closer to her and Aria.

Elena looked back at Massimo. He caught her gaze, just for a moment, and smiled at her.

Massimo looked at Tyler like he dealing with a misbehaved child.

“Isn’t it obvious?” Massimo asked. “I’m taking both of them.”

The scene erupted into chaos.

Massimo’s men made it to Elena and Aria. They quickly cut through their bindings and started getting the women to safety.

At the same time, Massimo and Tyler fought. They wrestled each other as Tyler tried to draw his gun and Massimo tried to knock the weapon away.

Elena realized that Tyler must have men stationed outside–bullets started to pour out from the open back door.

“We’ll make quick work of them,” Luca promised her. Elena could only nod.

Luca and the rest of Massimo’s men left Aria and Elena behind some old boxes. It provided cover from Tyler’s men outside, but Elena disliked how visible they were to Massimo and Tyler. But there was no other place to hide and take cover.

Elena turned to Aria. “We’ll be okay,” she promised. Elena said the words comfort as much for Aria’s sake as the doctor’s own.

Massimo landed a clean hit on Tyler’s jaw. Tyler stumbled back. Massimo saw Tyler try to draw his gun.

With no choice, Massimo charged at Tyler, pushing him further into the warehouse. The momentum got to be too much. Instead of keeping Tyler in close quarters, the man broke free from Massimo’s grip and went flying away from him.

Unfortunately giving Tyler just what he needed–enough time to draw his gun. As well as a clear sight line to his two captives.

Massimo only released too late that Tyler had switched strategies. Tyler wasn’t aiming to kill Massimo anymore. Tyler wanted to make the Mafia King suffer.

Tyler was too far away from Massimo–Aria and Elena were much closer. If Massimo couldn’t stop the bullet, he could at least make sure Tyler’s target moved.

Massimo sprinted toward Aria and forced her to the ground just as Tyler pulled the trigger. Massimo heard the familiar sound of a gunshot ring through the air.

But the bullet hadn’t even clipped Massimo.
