When Audrey and Nora walked into the VIP lounge, Joaquin was staring intently at the label on a prescription bottle.
Rainey was slumped in a plush armchair, looking completely drained. "I don't want to take it. It's too bitter."
Joaquin's dark eyes scanned the instructions. "No. You have to take it. It says the minimum dose is one pill."
He opened the bottle, shook a pill onto his palm, and coaxed her softly. "Be good. Take it."
Rainey pouted, opening her mouth to argue, but then she spotted the two women at the door. Her lips curved up. "Audrey, you're here?"
At the sound of her name, Joaquin's hand froze for a fraction of a second. He didn't look up. He simply pressed the pill to Rainey's lips and held a glass of warm water for her.
With a dramatic grimace, Rainey swallowed it. "I told you, it's awful." She then looked at Audrey, her tone playfully whining. "Audrey, aren't you going to tell him off? He's bullying me!"
On the surface, it sounded like an acknowledgment of Audrey's relationship with Joaquin. In reality, it was a blatant, calculated provocation.
Audrey let out a cold laugh. "What does Mr. Judd have to do with me? Why would I tell him off?"
"Nothing to do with you?" Joaquin finally set down the bottle and the glass. He leveled an icy glare at her. "Do you need me to have Martha bring over the marriage license to jog your memory?"
Audrey crossed her arms, her smile turning brittle. "The entire internet is currently convinced that you and Miss Rainey are a couple. If you bring that license over right now, aren't you afraid I'll just post my ID online? I'd love to let your precious Rainey taste the kind of public execution I dealt with yesterday."
