"Audrey! Nora! What are you guys doing hiding back here? Gideon is looking for you!"
A voice broke their intense conversation. Audrey looked over to see one of the PAs waving at them.
Nora immediately stepped in front of Audrey like a shield. "What does he want? If he expects Audrey to carry that sickly princess on her back, tell him to go to hell! It's not happening!"
The PA looked utterly bewildered. "What are you talking about? Carry her on her back? Why would she do that?" He frowned, pointing toward the main stage. "The props department just borrowed a wheelchair from the crew next door. Today's scene is just Audrey pushing Miss Rainey down the path."
Nora blinked, stunned, and glanced back at Audrey.
"Let's go," Audrey said quietly, patting Nora's shoulder. "Let's see what's going on."
If it was just pushing a wheelchair like the PA said, she could get through it. She had already put two days of work into this role; quitting at the absolute finish line felt like a waste.
When the three of them arrived on set, Gideon was hovering around Joaquin, practically kissing the ground he walked on. "Mr. Judd, your devotion to Miss Rainey is truly moving! Doing all this yourself... You don't see many men treating their girlfriends this well!"
Joaquin, who was in the middle of lowering Rainey into the wheelchair, froze. His eyes went glacial as he adjusted the blanket over her lap. "She is not my girlfriend."
Gideon paused, then chuckled nervously. "Right, right, of course! Not your girlfriend—the woman you're going to spend the rest of your life with!"
Joaquin's scowl deepened into something terrifying. He shot Gideon a look that could freeze water. "Do you not understand English? She and I are—"
Before he could finish, he caught sight of Audrey standing just a few feet away.
Seeing his eyes on her, Audrey strolled over, an incredibly fake, saccharine smile plastered on her face. "Gideon is absolutely right. Miss Rainey is definitely the woman Mr. Judd plans to spend the rest of his life with." She stopped and cast a withering look down at Rainey in the chair. "Isn't that right?"
Rainey's face went chalk-white. She bit her lip and looked up at Joaquin, her eyes welling with pathetic tears. "Joaquin... did you and Audrey... not work things out?"
