Chapter 14
Audrey was a light sleeper, and once woken up, she found it nearly impossible to drift off again. After a shower, she lay in bed with her eyes closed, but all she could see was Joaquin. His gentle gaze when he looked at Rainey, and his icy glare when he threatened her with her grandparents.
The bitterness she had managed to bury under a day of shopping came rushing back. Clutching the covers, she tossed and turned. Eventually, she gave up and went downstairs.
When the sound of a car pulling into the driveway echoed outside, Audrey was lounging on the sofa in her new, airy silk pajamas, eating fruit and watching the latest cuts of a TV drama sent by director Julian Chandler.
As the lead screenwriter, Audrey had personally handpicked the gorgeous lead actors, and their on-screen chemistry was a delight to watch.
Seeing the story she had written come to life on screen was steadily washing away the residual grief in her heart. She was so engrossed that she didn’t even notice the sounds outside.
It wasn’t until a key rattled in the lock and the front door swung open that she snapped back to reality and glanced over.
Rainey was clumsily dragging a dead-drunk Joaquin inside. Rainey was petite, and Joaquin was tall and solidly built. Her attempts to support him were both exhausting and comical.
Spotting Audrey sitting calmly in the living room, Rainey scowled. “Come help me!”
Audrey pressed her lips together, taking her time to wipe the strawberry juice off her fingers with a napkin before slowly walking over. “Why did you bring him here?”
It was exactly this kind of drunken vulnerability that had given Audrey the false hope that he might actually have feelings for her, pulling her deeper into the quicksand of her unrequited love.
But now, knowing exactly who truly held his heart, hearing his sweet murmurs and feeling his closeness only made her want to laugh at the absurdity of it all.
Especially with Rainey standing right there.
“Honey…” When Audrey didn’t respond, Joaquin nuzzled deeper into the crook of her neck. “Are you mad at me?”
Watching this play out, Rainey’s eyes burned with venomous jealousy.
