The Moment I Realized I Can't Lose You novel Chapter 38

The mention of yesterday's incident brought a flash of raw fury to Joaquin's eyes. "I haven't had the chance to settle that score with you yet. I always thought you were a gentleman, Mr. Foster. I didn't think you made a habit of striking women."

Miles let out a sharp, unapologetic laugh. "You know as well as anyone that I was a mercenary for a very long time. When I engage, I only see targets. I don't check their gender. Besides, didn't I already apologize to her?"

Joaquin scoffed. "You mean the half-assed 'sorry' you had Felix pass along? It was completely hollow."

"It wasn't meant to be sincere," Miles replied smoothly. "The apology was just to maintain the fragile, polite illusion of high society."

Joaquin glared at him, his brow deeply furrowed, the temperature in the room dropping several degrees. "I don't understand. What exactly did Rainey say to strike such a sensitive nerve that you forgot yourself and attacked her?"

Before Miles could answer, a knock interrupted them. The door opened to reveal two people.

The first was a nurse. "Mr. Judd, the physical exam orders have been entered into the system. A phlebotomist will be here in five minutes to draw Mrs. Judd's blood. Please prepare her."

The second person was Chase Snow, holding two takeout bags from the Royal Bistro. "Sir, the manager had these rushed over."

Joaquin remained seated, still holding Audrey firmly on his lap. He gave a curt nod. "Leave one for my wife. Take the other up to Rainey's room."

Staring at the sharp, unforgiving lines of Joaquin’s profile, panic clawed at Audrey’s throat again.

What was she going to do? The man refused to even put her down. How was she supposed to protect her baby?
