The sheer panic in the nurse's voice didn't sound faked. Joaquin’s tone instantly sharpened. "What happened?"
"I don't know!" the nurse sobbed. "She went completely pale and begged me to call you..."
The nurse was shouting so loudly that even without the speaker on, Audrey could hear every word perfectly. She immediately slapped on a look of deep concern. "You need to go check on her! Rainey is more important right now. She’s the patient!"
Joaquin shot her a conflicted look, his eyes darting to Miles. Whatever was going on between Audrey and Miles, it clearly wasn't completely innocent. If he left now, he’d be handing them the perfect opportunity to be alone together. But the medical team was already on their way up for the blood draw, so he couldn't exactly drag her with him...
"What are you waiting for?" Audrey urged, her voice laced with mock anxiety. "Isn't she the most important person to you?"
Right on cue, the nurse wailed even louder through the phone. "Mr. Judd, please hurry! I think she just passed out!"
That was all it took. Joaquin didn't hesitate a second longer. He barked an order, calling Chase back from down the hall. He snatched the Royal Bistro bag from his assistant's hand. "I'll take this up to her myself. You stay here and supervise my wife’s bloodwork."
He shot a glacial, warning look toward Audrey and Miles. "I mean it. Stay with her while they draw blood, and go retrieve the results yourself. Let's not inconvenience any *outsiders*."
Chase had worked for Joaquin for years. He instantly caught the underlying command. "Understood, sir."
With that, Chase moved perfectly into position, standing physically between Audrey and Miles, completely cutting off their line of sight like a dutiful guard dog.
Satisfied, Joaquin spun on his heel and rushed toward the elevators with the breakfast in hand.
With him gone, Audrey realized she only had three minutes until the phlebotomist arrived. She frowned, desperately trying to catch Miles's eye, but Chase was perfectly in the way.
