Shopping with Fiona was absolute torture. The woman thrived on throwing her wealth around and wielding her status as a Judd family matriarch like a weapon. She barked orders and spoke down to everyone in her path.
In every boutique they entered, she left a trail of stressed, resentful retail workers. Audrey could do nothing but offer apologetic smiles, slipping generous tips to the staff during checkout as an emotional damage deposit.
After a grueling morning at the luxury mall, trailing behind Fiona with over a dozen designer shopping bags, they finally climbed into the car and headed toward St. Jude's Medical Center.
Sitting in the passenger seat, Audrey stared out at the passing streets, her brow furrowing as the route grew increasingly familiar.
She really couldn't catch a break with this hospital today. She had just been here for her checkup that morning, and now she was back again by noon.
Before long, the car pulled up to the entrance.
Fiona stepped out of the backseat, elegantly smoothing her hair before snapping her fingers at Audrey. "Grab all the gifts. We're going to see my friend."
Throughout their one-year marriage, Fiona had always treated Audrey like a glorified pack mule whenever they went out. In the past, Audrey had swallowed her pride, telling herself it was just a small sacrifice to keep the peace with her mother-in-law.
Now, she only felt exhausted annoyance. She wasn't Fiona’s maid.
But reminding herself that her marriage to Joaquin was basically on a countdown timer, she suppressed her irritation. *Just one last time,* she told herself.
Loaded down with boxes and shopping bags like a human display rack, she followed Fiona into the hospital lobby.
But the moment they stepped into the elevator, Fiona reached out and confidently pressed the button for the 16th floor.
Seeing the red light illuminate the '16', Audrey’s eyes narrowed. The 16th floor was the VIP wing. It was where Rainey’s suite was located.
*Ding.*
The elevator arrived.
