The Moment I Realized I Can't Lose You novel Chapter 75

Her words made Joaquin's grip on her hand tighten unconsciously.

In the past, whenever she mentioned she wasn't feeling well, he would shoot off a quick text telling her to rest and reminding her to forward the medical bills and results to him. He had genuinely believed that was enough to fulfill his duties as a husband. It had never occurred to him to physically be there, to hold her hand while waiting for terrifying test results.

Ever since Rainey had returned, she had asked him to sit in on every consultation and treatment.

He hadn't seen any issue with it—they had grown up together, she was battling a terminal illness, and she didn't have any close friends to lean on.

But hearing Audrey put it so bluntly, he suddenly realized just how horribly he had neglected his own wife.

After a suffocating silence, he looked at her, his voice brooking no argument. "I said I'm staying with you tonight, and I mean it."

Audrey's lips curved into a bitter, devastating smile. If she hadn't overheard the second half of his phone conversation just a moment ago, she might have actually believed he cared. In reality, the only thing he was babying was the marrow inside her bones.

The battery of tests dragged on until ten-thirty. When the expedited results finally landed on his desk, Wyatt pulled his mask up and delivered the prearranged verdict. "It's a false alarm. Just a severe endocrine imbalance. Mrs. Judd is experiencing these symptoms due to extreme stress."

He shot Joaquin a pointed look. "You need to start paying better attention to your wife's well-being."

"I understand." Joaquin took the file, giving Audrey a deep, unreadable look. "I'll make sure she's taken care of."

After a polite nod of thanks, he grabbed her hand and led her out of the hospital.
