His voice was low, husky, and dangerously alluring. If it were the old Audrey, hearing that level of concern from him would have sent her over the moon. But the current Audrey just let out a cold, bitter laugh. "Why bother faking it? I'm only in this mess because you graciously secured this punching-bag role for me, aren't I?"
Joaquin's eyes dimmed. After a long pause, he pressed his lips together. "I'll contact the director and have the rest of the physical abuse scenes cut from the script."
Audrey scoffed. "Don't waste your breath. Didn't Rainey tell you? We finished all the physical scenes today."
"I'm sorry." Joaquin exhaled deeply, staring at the red marks on her face, and offered a quiet apology.
Audrey froze, thinking she must have misheard. She honestly believed a man like him was physically incapable of lowering his head.
While she was lost in thought, Joaquin gently took her hand again. "How did your fingers get like this?"
He looked down, carefully using tweezers to pluck the tiny, embedded shards of glass from her skin. "Did you go digging through the trash?"
Audrey rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I went dumpster diving. You better hurry up and divorce me before your garbage-picking wife ruins your pristine reputation."
Joaquin let out a soft chuckle, his movements remaining incredibly gentle as he applied the medicine. "Next time you go dumpster diving, invite me. I'm curious what kind of trash could tempt Mrs. Judd into digging through it."
Audrey pressed her lips tight, refusing to respond. The room fell into a quiet lull.
Watching this man meticulously treat her wounds, she felt a strange, jarring sense of déjà vu. It felt exactly like their old, peaceful days together. But she knew better than anyone that everything had completely changed...
"Done."
His deep voice snapped her out of her daze. Looking down, she realized all ten of her fingers were heavily wrapped in gauze. They looked like ten mini baseball bats. She didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "Is this the handiwork of a billionaire CEO? It's terrible."
