Chapter 110

–Zane

I noticed Justine was awfully quiet when we returned to our room.

Before that, she hadn’t spoken much either.

At the party, she just sat down and wasn’t her bubbly self the whole time.

She sat in front of the vanity mirror, combing her hair absentmindedly, wearing her night robe.

I walked over and stood behind her, but she didn’t notice me and kept staring at the mirror.

I got scared. What’s wrong with her? It’s not like her to get this lost in thought.

I leaned in and kissed my mark on her neck, breathing in her intoxicating scent.

Only then did she jolt out of her trance and turn to look at me; she faked a smile to ease my mind.

“What’s wrong, love?” I asked, taking her hands into mine. “You don’t love so good”

“Do you think I’m barren?” she suddenly asked, and my heart sank.

“W-what?”, I screamed, stuttering. “Why would you call yourself that?”

“Well, what else do I call it?” she questioned, and I twirled her chair to make her face me.

I saw her eyes were red, as if she had been trying to stop herself from crying.

“Darling, you are perfectly fine. Nothing is wrong with you, your body and anatomy,” I said, kissing her knuckles, but I saw a tear stream down her face.

“Zane, I know you care about me, but I can’t.” She hesitated and looked me in the eye, unsure how to say what she wanted to say, “….I know people are talking about me now, especially since Luna Kaia is about to give the alpha an heir. We’ve been together for more than four years, we’ve been trying for a baby too, why didn’t I get pregnant?”

“Baby, baby, listen to me” I cupped her face, and she was already crying bitterly. “Fuck whatever they are saying! It’s not your fault. Besides, we are a young couple; we don’t need more responsibilities mandated on us yet. Let’s enjoy our marriage for a little while more, then we can worry about having kids”

I tried to pacify her, but I saw in her eyes that she wasn’t convinced, and she wasn’t willing to take things as lightly as I was.

Someone must have said something to hurt mate, and whoever it was, I will not forgive them if I find them.

That’s why she was feeling down, thinking something might be wrong with her; I’m not going to spare whoever made my wife feel this way. I made a mental note.

“Zane, it’s not that simple,” Justine said, still sobbing, and my heart broke even more. “You’re a beta; the pack needs a beta heir. An heir to be trained alongside the alpha heir. I can’t fail you, Zane. I don’t want you end up as a laughingstock because

of me”

Her eyes were filled with tears, and she stood up, walking to the window. I figured she felt suffocated inside.

“Why are you blaming yourself then?” I asked, forcing her to look at me. “Who said the problem was you and not me? What if I am the one with the problem? And you’re blaming yourself for nothing?” I paused, making her see reasons.”Look, darling, we love each other. We are really into each other, that’s all that matters to us. Getting pregnant is a bonus; if it happens, great; if it doesn’t, nothing will change between us. You’re my mate, and I love you crazy”

“Besides, if I can’t give a beta heir. They can always get the beta hair from Anita, my sister, who already has two sons and is pregnant with a daughter,” I said, trying to cheer her up. “Who says the heir has to come from only me?”

I pulled Justine closer, wiped her tears, then hugged her tight enough to assure her that I wasn’t bothered by this.

Justine was quiet, and I wondered what was running through her mind.

I broke the hug and looked at her face.

“You know,” I muttered, ” if you want a baby, we can always adopt from the orphanage. There is no need to put pressure on your mind and body”

“You don’t understand, Zane” Justine pulled back, and I got even more worried. “You might not care what people will say about you not giving the pack a beta heir, but I know what will happen if the heir doesn’t come from us”

She went to sit on the bed and clasped her palms together.

Something was bothering her, but she wouldn’t tell me.

“Fine,” I resigned. “What would you like to do?”

“Darling,” she hopped to her feet and tugged at my arm. “Let’s go see the fertility specialist, please”

My jaw dropped after she spoke. My wife was deeply affected by the news of Luna Kaia’s pregnancy, and I can’t do anything to help her.

“Please don’t refuse, Zane”, she clasped her hands, pleading with her eyes. “I know this is a matter of your reputation, but please”

“Shhh,” I put a finger over her lips. “My reputation isn’t as important to me as you are. I will do anything that makes you happy”

“Thank you, darling”, she tiptoed and kissed the top of my nose. Tears fell from her eyes; it broke my heart.

“Let’s get you to bed,” I said, and made her lie down, then pulled the blanket over her.

I kissed her forehead and lips before letting her rest.

I watched her sleep until she was fast asleep before I stood up.

My mind is made up, I will get to the bottom of this.

I took out a bottle of vodka I’ve been saving for a night like this.

Too bad, Theo wouldn’t be able to drink with me tonight.

He has his pregnant mate to look after, while my mate is wallowing in self-pity, and I wonder why,

I finished the entire bottle and went to bed with Justine.

When I woke up the morning after, I had a terrible headache, but I ignored it as I needed to handle some work for the alpha.

Theo and I worked on a few things, meeting with the pack council members over a land dispute and all.

After working endlessly for the afternoon, Theo asked us to take a break, and we did.

We walked to the restaurant opposite the office to grab lunch.

Theo looked so happy; he couldn’t stop smiling the whole time, and I know it was about Kaia.

Chapter 110

He has finally found happiness with Kaia. I was the most excited for him.

I wish Justine and I were as happy, but this pregnancy thing is taking a toll on her.

“What’s wrong? You don’t look so good,” Theo asked, after noticing that I had massaged my temple a couple of times.

He has always been an excellent observer. I see why he’s alpha and not that douchebag Lucien.

“It’s nothing, I just had a lot to drink last night”, I half-confessed, and he didn’t buy it. “Don’t worry about it”

“It was I who got the news of becoming a father, and you got drunk in my place?” Theo casually asked and chuckled after. “Tell me the truth, what is the matter? Is this about you and Justine?”

When he said that, I realised Theo knew me too well, and I couldn’t hide anything from him, even if I wanted to.

“It’s Justine,” I mouthed softly. “S-she’s sad that she hasn’t gotten pregnant since we got together. Now that Luna Kaia is pregnant, she’s afraid people would taunt her for being barren and failing to give the pack a beta heir”

“What? Why would she think that?” Theo looked as shocked as I was.

“I think someone said that to my mate,” I said, gritting my teeth.

“Justine has done a lot for this pack. Who would say that to her?” Theo said, clenching his fists.

“I have no idea who it was, but I won’t let it slide,” I vowed. “I will get to the bottom of who this fish was, and when I do, I won’t go easy on them”

“You have my full support,” Theo patted my shoulder.

“Justine wants me to go to a fertility doctor with her?” I said, and Theo raised his head.

“If it will give her a little peace, why not? You should totally go for it,” Theo said, and I felt relieved. “I’m sure nothing is wrong with the two of you, but it’s okay to do as she wishes”

“I thought so too,” I said. “I will take a day off and go with her, if you don’t mind

“Of course, I don’t mind. Take as much time as you’ll need, the Gamma and I will handle the dispute while you’re out”

“Thank you, Theo”, I mouthed, and he smiled.

We ate lunch and packed up work for the day.

I got flowers for my mate; she loved beautiful flowers, and I rushed home to be with her.

She was in a vulnerable state and needed me more than ever.

When I got there, she wasn’t in our room. The staff mentioned that she had gone to see Kaia, so I went to collect her from there.

She and Kaia were playing card games together at the alpha wing/ She was playing loudly with her eyes glistening with joy.

She and Kaia struggled to defeat each other. I watched from a distance.

“Checkmate!” I heard her scream and clapped her hands, almost throwing herself into the air.

“That’s not fair, Justine!” Kaia patted. “You didn’t show any mercy on me”

“All is fair in hunger and card games, Kaia. Besides, you gave me a tough time, I almost couldn’t win,” she happily chatted, and I was glad to see her out of her brooding mood from last night.

“Oh, it’s Zane,” Kaia turned and caught me watching them. “Hey, beta, how long have you been spying on us?” She asked, chuckling, and I walked over.

“I wasn’t spying, Kaia, but yeah, I stayed long enough to see Justine beating your arse. I need you to fight back!” I said, and she laughed.

“She didn’t beat my arse, I let her win for today. Next time, I will not go easy on her” This is Kaia for you; she never backs down. It’s so adorable.

“I see, I’d like to see you best her arse back next time”, I said and moved towards Justine. “Mind if I steal my wife for a moment?”

“I don’t mind, she’s been yearning for you the whole time, go ahead”, Kaia insisted. “Maliya and I have to get something done”

I took Justine’s hand, and we left for our room. The moment the door closed behind us, I handed her the flowers and kissed her neck, taking in her scent.

Her scent intoxicated me, and I didn’t want to leave.

We made love breathlessly for over an hour, and when we fell on the bed, satisfied, I kissed her knuckles.

“Let’s go see the fertility specialist like you wanted,” I whispered, and she looked at me with shock, then hugged me.

“I love you, my big bad baby. Thank you.” She whispered, and I kissed her cheeks!

I will do anything for her, everything it takes to keep her happy.
