Chapter 015
–Theo–
The moment Kaia was escorted from the Council chamber, the atmosphere changed – colder, sharper.
Almost biting like silver chains.
“Now,” said Elder Rowan, leaning forward, “let’s speak plainly.”
I stood there motionless, though my jaw flexed once.
“She is a stranger,” Rowan continued. “A stray you brought into our Packlands. You vouch for her–fine. Then let her prove she deserves your trust.”
I kept my expression still. “She saved one of our scouts today. That should speak for something.”
“Oh speak of coincidence,” another snapped. “Or convenience.”
A third leaned forward. “You claim she can be trusted? Then let her prove it.”
My eyes narrowed. “What do you mean?”
Elder Rowan smiled the kind of smile I had learned to distrust.
“A test. If the girl’s loyalty lies with you and our pack, she will not fail. And if it lies elsewhere-” He spread his hands. “We’ll have our answer without bloodshed.”
My gut tightened. “You’re talking about sending her into the field.”
–
“Only to observe,” another said mildly. “We have rogue movements near the ridge again – minor patrols, nothing your guards can’t control. Let her assist the medics. Let her be seen. Let the pack decide whether she‘ s one of us or a threat.”
I exhaled through my teeth. “You want to parade her like bait.”
Rowan’s gaze didn’t waver. “I want the people to see what their Alpha defends.”
I stepped closer to the table. “And if she’s hurt?”
“Then perhaps she isn’t fit to be one of us. And this is the goddess giving a chance to see things clearly, Alpha Theo,” Rowan murmured.
I let out a low growl. “She’s barely recovered. You want her to bleed for your paranoia?”
Marcus smirked. “We want to see what she does when loyalty is tested. Call it… observation. There’s a patrol scheduled near the western ridge – minor rogue sightings. Assign her there. Let her assist your soldiers.”
My eyes narrowed. “You want her watched.”
“Exactly,” said another elder smoothly. “If she’s clean, your people will see it. If not…” He shrugged. “The truth
reveals itself in fire.”
I felt my head spinning.
How could they be so callous.
Kaia has suffered enough yet they are hellbent on making her suffer more.
And somehow, I’m helpless to stop them.
I didn’t say anything.
Silence.
Then Elder Corwin said, his voice sharp as flint. “The people are talking and the council doubts your judgment already. In no time, it might become a chaos. You wouldn’t want that, Would you?”
I clenched my fists. They’re setting her up to fail.
And they’re baiting me too.
“And she mustn’t know,” Rowan added. “If you tell her, it taints the result. She should believe it’s just a routine

patrol.”
Great.
―
My hand curled at my side. They’re not testing her they’re testing me too.
They want a chance to rid of me of my position.
This isn’t the first time.
And might not be the last time too.
The silence thickened until I finally spoke, voice low and dangerous.
I turned around from their gazes.
Exhausted. Annoyed.
“Fine. I’ll allow it. She goes under my command. No one touches her,and no one undermines her” I look at the council’s faces. “But if anything happens to her, I’ll consider it treason – from whoever ordered it.”
“As you wish, Alpha.” Rowan’s smile didn’t fade. “Of course, Alpha. We all serve the pack’s best interests.”
I turned and walked out the doors before I let out the anger clawing at my throat.
Everyone of them is pretentious.
Pretending to be concerned about the pack.
When all they really want is to see me fail.
A chance for them to clamor for my brother,Lucien to takeover.
Something they’ve dreamt off all along.
Unfortunately, Lucien couldn’t keep up until now.
Kaia.
I breathed her name.
You won’t be doing this alone. I will be your shadow.
Lurking. Helping. Every step of the way.
Kaia stood outside, waiting.
The cold stone of the corridor pressing against her back.
The guards wouldn’t meet her eyes. Atleast, less something to worry about.
When I finally emerged, I’m sure she noticed how I looked. Like I’d aged an hour inside that room.
“Well?” Kaia asked quietly.
I exhaled. “The Council agreed to let you stay.”
Her brows rose in disbelief. “That’s it? Just like that?”
“Well, it wasn’t an easy task convincing them but still here we are,” I said.
I didn’t look at her face. I hope she doesn’t notice I was hiding something.
“What do I have to do?” Kaia asked, prying a little.
I forced a faint smile. “They’ve decided to assign you to a small field team. A patrol near the western ridge. Nothing dangerous – standard procedure for new arrivals.”
She tilted my head. “You’re serious?”
“It’ll help them see you’re not a threat,” he said. “You’ll have guards with you. I trust them.”
Something flickered in my expression – disappointment, wariness, maybe both.
Kaia muttere. “Why don’t you just let me go? It’s way easier”
“Not a chance,Kaia. I don’t do easy. Remember”

“If that’s what it takes to stop the whispers,” Kaia said finally, “then I’ll do it.”
I nodded once, masking a flickering twist in my chest.
As she turned away, I said quietly, “Kaia–be careful.”
Kaia looked back at me, eyes soft but steady. “I always am.”
I stood there watching her leave.
With Maliya, her assistant.
When Kaia disappeared down the hall, I lingered by the Council doors.
Elder Rowan’s voice drifted out, calm and cutting.
“You shouldn’t grow attached, Theo. If she fails this test… the next order won’t be exile”
My jaw tightened. “Then she won’t fail.”
But as I walked away, the unease in my chest told me I might be lying–to them, or to myself.
~~KAIA~~
I was summoned early in the morning, still bruised and exhausted.
When I arrived, I saw Theo’s Beta Zane, waiting for me.
Beta Zane looked at me. Coldly. With blames.
“Miss Kaia, you have been given a chance to help the Pack. Deliver the herbs and medicines to the western ridge. This is a chance for you to prove yourself. Prove yourself and save Theo’s reputation”
“Really?,” I raised my head.“Tell me Beta Zane. This isn’t just delivering herbs to the patrol, right? What’s going on?”
“What are you talking about?” Beta Zane glances at me.“It’s exactly as it is. Nothing harmful”
“Funny,” I said quietly, meeting Beta Zane’s gaze.” You never trusted me with anything harmless before”
“Don’t test your luck,girl,” He slammed,annoyed.“The Alpha’s watching”
“Beta Zane doesn’t seem very fond of me,l see” I smirked.“But even at that, you can’t hide your feelings. Don’t worry, I’m going, just wanted to make sure”
I didn’t argue anymore.
I took the bag of herbs and spices from Beta Zane and headed out.
Alpha Theo has refused to let me go.
I can’t let him down. If this is the only way to earn their trust,I will gladly accept it.
The patrol moves through forest terrain – two soldiers ahead, one behind me.
Every stare felt like they were looking into my soul.
To extract my secret. My loyalty.
I tried to help any way I could but they didn’t need my help.
They were scared of what I’m hiding beneath my skin.
On our way, a shredded scout was suddenly found in a twisted position, his ankle shattered and slammed to the ground still breathing, barely.
–
Blood everywhere.
Wincing in pain.
“Stay still,don’t move,”
I rushed forward to help him, even as the others drew weapons.
“Hey stray, stay away from him. Don’t even try to hurt him” one of the soldiers screamed, stopping me.
“I’m not trying to help him. He’s going to die” I yelled in frustration.

Gradually, one of them, Samson stepped in front of me, shielding me.
“She’s just trying to help. If she doesn’t attend to him soon, he might die.” Samson tried to convince them.
But the others remain cold.
“What do you want? For the scout to die? Do you realise how furious the Alpha would be?” Samson asked.
“The council doesn’t trust her. We can’t let her act on her own” one of the soldiers replied.
“The Alpha’s getting soft. So is everyone”
“If she turns on us, we’ll say we saw it coming”
I heard them whisper to each other. The tension is thick, foreboding.
While they murmured to themselves,I attempted to help again.
“Stay back,” One snarls.“You’ll finish what you started last time”
“He’s dying!” I snapped, ripping her sleeves to bind the wound. “Do something useful or shut up!”
Samson said, looking at me with admiration
“You’re not what they say you are, healer”
I tried stabilising the scout – just enough to get him breathing.
But then, he murmurs something delirious:
“…She… Helped them..”
Everyone freezes. The soldiers look at me like I’ve been caught red–handed.
I stand surrounded, the men’s blades drawn.
Samson tries to defend me, saying, “She saved him! How could she have helped them? She was with us!”
But the others don’t listen.
I looked at the unconscious scout, then at the sky, whispering,
“You can’t win,can you,Kaia?”
“You don’t get to decide that,Samson. The Alpha will be here soon. The Alpha and the council will decide the
truth”
This was the last thing I heard. Before their voices grew distant.
Theo’s coming – and I have no idea whether he’s coming to save me… or to condemn me.
-Theo–
I stand in the Council chamber, furious.
“We agreed on the western ridge. How could you send her to the outpost? That’s close to the rogue territory”
A few minutes ago. I found out what the council decided behind my back.
Kaia wasn’t supposed to go to the outpost. It wasn’t what we agreed on.
“You were being soft and lenient with her. Moreover, this is the council’s decision. We can choose the loyalty test without the Alpha’s approval”
“If she truly means no harm,” Councilor Daren says,” She will survive and return.”
“And if she doesn’t?” I asked,coldly.
“Then your mercy won’t have cost us our lives”
I clenched my jaw.
I can’t openly protect Kaia – it would expose my bias and endanger Kaia.
They’ve already approved the ‘test‘ and I was outnumbered politically, even by my own advisors.
I know why they are doing this. It’s a bait.

I hope Kaia doesn’t fall into their trap.
While in the chambers, I mindlink my most trusted warrior, Calder, to shadow the mission unseen.
“If anything happens, bring Kaia back,” I warned. “Alive”
A messenger bursts into the Council chamber – “Blood at the border, Alpha.”
My heart drops.
I strides out immediately, ignoring their protests.
As I rushed out, Calder’s mindlink hits.
“It’s the scout’s blood, not hers. She saved him. But,they think she’s the reason he was attacked.”
I exhaled, half in relief, half in fury.
–
I knew this was the Council’s goal to turn suspicion into proof.
How can they be so callous and shameless?
“Stay behind her there,” I ordered. “I’m coming”
