Chapter 021
–THEO–
The Pack was suffocating without Kaia for some reason.
Everywhere I turned, everyone had their eyes on me, watching, waiting patiently for a slip up.
Having ruled this pack for three years.
I knew my pack members better than they know themselves.
They can’t hide their feelings and thoughts even if they tried.
After an attack that killed my mother years ago, the Shadowclaw Pack didn’t welcome strays and strangers.
Of course,I don’t blame them.
That attack changed the life of every one of them. Mine too.
When I took over, I made sure no strays were allowed.
Imagine their shock when I brought Kaia home that day.
They went insane. Completely out of their minds.
Flustered with fear of the unknown.
The council wanted me to get rid of her immediately but I couldn’t let Kaia go.
Now, they are doing everything to make her life hell.
They wanted Kaia gone.
Or maybe it’s an excuse for what they really want.
They want me gone.
And I know who’s behind this.
Their whispers still echoed in my head long after the meeting ended.
They just hadn’t decided how yet.
I’d just stepped into my study when Zane’s call came through- sharp and urgent.
Zane says. “Theo you need to hear this. Kaia says the council king is being poisoned”
Shocked. I exclaimed. “What?”
I stopped mid–stride, pulse tightening.
Zane went silent.
“Actually, Alpha there is something I haven’t told you yet” Zane said, “We were ambushed”
“Ambushed,” my throat caught.“Why the hell are you just telling me this now? And Kaia, where is she?”
“Sorry,Alpha Theo,” Zane apologized.”We were so caught up with saving the injured guard that I didn’t have time to inform you. Also, the Alpha..”
My body shook with pang. “What about the Alpha?”
Fear gripped my heart.
If anything happens to the Alpha.
Kaia. Goddess.
“The Alpha had the same poison residue as the guard.” Zane says, “When Kaia attended to him, we almost lost him. Blackbane toxin that’s the poison”
Blackbane toxin. I’ve heard of that before.
Shocked. “Blackbane? That’s dangerous! Are you sure about this?”
Chapter 021
“Absolutely. Kaia says she’s sure”
“Did she tell anyone else about this?” I asked, hoping she did not.
“No,” Zane says.“Just me. I’m sure she didn’t tell anyone else about it, Alpha Theo”
Good.
I exhaled slowly. Smart. She knew better than to speak openly about this. Especially not when half the Council already thought she was a threat.
“Where is she right now?” I asked, my face grim.
Zane stopped. Then said, “I left her alone for a few minutes. She must be looking after the king”
I can’t risk it.
Gritting my teeth, I barked. “Keep her where she is, I’m on my way. If anyone touches her, I will kill them brutally in cold blood”
“You won’t make it in time,” Zane pointed out. “The council made her treat the king. They will observe him for a few more hours before we are allowed to go”
KMy gut turned to ice. Of course they did.
A test. That was their game plan all along.
Send the outsider to the dying King and if he dies, she’s the scapegoat.
Smart. Cunning foxes.
Theo: “Stay close to her, Zane. Don’t let anyone interfere.”
Zane broke the silence. “Theo, don’t worry about it. I will look after Kaia and bring her back safely”
Safely. I don’t trust whoever is behind these attacks.
What if they hurt Kaia again?
My body shook with anger. Uncontrollably.
“Fine,” I sighed.“Keep an eye on her. Stay with her,” I said quietly. “If anything happens to her, you’ll answer me. Do you understand?”
“I understand,Alpha Theo. I will stay with her”
Softly I added. “Inform me if anything comes up again”
Zane agreed.“I will do just that, Alpha”
I stopped talking. Thinking for a minute.
I instructed calmly. “Also, first thing in the morning. Return to Shadowclaw with Kaia, Ronan will get the car”
“And the council. What would they say?” Zane asked, rightfully so.
“Kaia has completed her task. There’s no reason for her to stay back. I will speak to the council” I said.
“I hope they don’t take this the wrong way,Theo” Zane sounds worried.
I understand his concerns. We’ve been through this many times.
The council is against me.
Trying to make me fall to prove their point.
This isn’t the first time. It’s sad Kaia got caught up in my mess.
“I understand. Still, Kaia saved the king’s life. They have no reason to test her anymore. So,it’s settled, bring her back soon”
I was about to cut the call when I recalled something.
“One more time, discreetly investigate the Alpha’s illness”
“You can count on it, Alpha Theo”
Chapter 021
When I finished talking to Zane,my blood boiled.
I paced my study, seething, jaw locked.
–
Every instinct in me screamed to move to run straight to the council hall.
To accuse them of attempting to kill Kaia.
But an Alpha couldn’t act on impulse. Not when the Council was already circling like vultures.
So I waited.
Listened as they questioned my authority.
Half the council didn’t want me as Alpha. My stepmother, Cara wanted her son, Lucien as Alpha but he couldn’t keep up.
Despite this, she wouldn’t stop trying to remove me.
I’m sure she had something to do with the attacks.
I can’t prove it yet. But,I won’t let her get away with this.
I paused.
Catching my breath.
I’d been so angry I didn’t realise I was clutching my breath.
Kaia might have managed to save the king but the danger isn’t over yet.
A knot tightens in my chest thinking of this.
I stood up, picking up a shawl.
Kaia’s shawl.
The one she left behind the night she tried to escape.
Escape from Shadowclaw and me.
I held it close to my chest, her smell filling my nose.
I could almost feel her through the bond I shouldn’t have. That strange pull that had begun the moment I found her half–dead on my borders.
And now she’d saved the King… or damned herself trying.
Her shawl smells of exile.
Something I badly want to change.
I want her as a member of my Pack and rid herself of being an outcast.
When Kaia gets back, I will ask her.
Ask her to be mine.
I mean a member of my pack. She deserves safety and security, I will give her that.
No matter what it takes.
I won’t let her go anywhere. I don’t think I can imagine this pack without Kaia.
For someone I met less than two weeks ago, I can’t live without her.
Oh shit!
I’m not in my right senses. The pack and council problem probably have me stressed out.
While battling within myself, a knock landed on my door.
Calder walks in.
“Alpha Theo. I have a message” Calder says.
“Tell me,”
Chapter 021
“Alpha Draven Stormer..”
Hearing that name piqued my attention.
“Alpha Stormer crowned a Luna today.”
“A Luna?” I asked, not to Calder. “So fast”
“Yes, I found out Draven had an affair. And the new Luna is bearing him an heir soon” Calder reported.
I nodded. “Interesting. Alpha Draven turns out to be worse than I thought”
“Yes,Alpha. It hasn’t been a month since he kicked out his first Luna and he got another one already.” Calder says. “Do you need me to do anything?”
Speaking of this, Alpha Draven owes me something.
“Yes. Get in touch with Alpha Draven Stormer. It’s about time,we meet again”
Draven Stormer,long time, no see.
I hope he remembers what he owes me because I didn’t forget it at all.
Not even for a second.
