I froze.

My mind racing.

Silvermoon. Draven’s pack.

The one responsible for the border massacre last year.

I didn’t move, didn’t speak, but Kaia saw the flicker of shock in my eyes before I masked it.

“Youve heard of them?” She said quietly, not a question.

“Everyone’s heard of them” I replied

A pause.

Our gazes met.

Heavy, cautious, magnetic.

For a long time, neither of them spoke.

Kaia’s hand tightened around her glass. Her knuckles pale.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you,” she said finally, her voice so low I almost couldn’t hear her.

I looked up. “Then tell me.”

Her throat worked as she swallowed, the words tasting like ashes.

“I wasn’t just a healer in Silvermoon Pack,” she says.“I was their Luna”

The words hung between us like lightning, bright and deadly.

I froze, studying her face; searching for the lie that wasn’t there.

“Their Luna?”

Kaia nodded once, the movement sharp and brittle.

“Draven was my mate. Chosen by the moon goddess herself,or so I thought”

She laughed bitterly. No warmth in it.

“He betrayed me. Took another woman to his bed. And when she got pregnant, she decided I was in the way and needed to be removed”

I didn’t move. Didn’t interrupt.

Just listened – jaw tight, hands clasped.

“They said I tried to kill her,” Kaia whispered. “They called it treason,called me a murderer, and cast me out by the moonrise”

Her eyes glistened but she didn’t cry. She’d cried enough.

“I begged him to see the truth but he wouldn’t even look at me. The pack I bled for,the pack I led–They wanted my head”

Outside, thunder rolled. Cracking the sky open and rain begins to pour.

Neither of us moved.

The balcony went utterly still. Only the rain splattering.

My voice was rough when I finally said, “And yet here you are. Still standing.”

“Barely,” Kaia muttered.“Now do you understand“, she said. “why I don’t trust anyone who says they’ll protect me”

“After everything, I just can’t bring myself to..”

Chapter 025

I didn’t answer.

Instead, I leaned forward, elbows on my knees, eyes locked on hers. “So tell me, Kaia-”

My tone changed.

Low, deliberate, the kind that could command a room into silence.

“Do you want me to be your Alpha?,”

Her breath caught.

Kaia looks at me sharply.

Not sure, she heard me right.

“Pardon?,” Kaia remarks. “What did you say?”

There was no teasing in my eyes now, only that dark steady promise that came with my title.

“I ask do you want me to be your Alpha?,” I repeated.“Because if you do, I will protect you with my life. No matter what it takes, this is an Alpha’s promise”

Kaia still looks aghast. Not sure how to process this.

I totally understand.

This came as a shock to her.

Afterall, the council has been on her neck for weeks.

“Alpha Theo,do you know what you are saying?” She muttered,her lips quivering.

I nod, making eye contact.

“You heard me, Kaia”

Kaia shakes her head, unsure if I was pulling her legs. Her chest tightened with disbelief.

“You don’t know what you’re saying, Theo,” Kaia laughs dryly.

“I know exactly what I’m saying,.” I say firmly. “I don’t say things I don’t mean❞

The air thickened between us, with Kaia shaking her head,still not sure of my decision.

She looked away. “You’re not thinking straight. You’re paranoia …Confused maybe. You just want to protect me because

”

“Because I want to,” I cut in, my voice low.“Because I have to”

That silenced her.

She didn’t speak.

For a long minute, the only thing I heard was the sound of her heart pounding.

Loudly.

Scared maybe. Or she doesn’t want to stay here permanently.

Finally, she said, squeezing her fingers. “I need some time to think over this”

I nodded, my jaw tight but my gaze soft. “Take your time,Kaia. As much as you need”

I turned away, afraid I was going to say something I shouldn’t say.

Afraid, I wouldn’t be able to take it back if I did.

“Thanks for dinner, Theo.” Kaia stood up. “I will go ahead first. Good night”

“Good night. Kaia” I smiled.

I watched her go,my chest rising for some reason.

Once she’s gone,my wolf stirred.

[You felt that too, didn’t you, Theo?]

My wolf, Stash, curiously asked.

“Stop it,” I muttered. “She’s not ours” My jaw clenched.

[Then why do you feel a pull whenever she’s near you?]

“That’s not true,Stash. Stop imaging things. Delusional freak”

[You’re denying it, aren’t you?]

“No,Stash. If she was our mate. We would have known.” I replied,calming him down.

[Would we? Or has the moon goddess hidden her away from us? I want Kaia, she’s perfect]

“You’re being reckless again, Stash. Not every shewolf is our mate” I scolded.

[Reckless? You call protecting what’s ours, reckless?]

“She doesn’t belong to us, what’s wrong with you today?”

[She does. You’re just too scared to be disappointed]

I exhaled sharply trying to drown out Stash’s growls.

“She had a mate, Stash,she’s not ours. Stop projecting and go away” I whispered,shaking my head.

[No! She’s something. You feel it, don’t you? Don’t lie to me]

“Just go away,Stash”

After pushing Stash to the back of my mind, my pulse thudded.

It thudded hard.

I feel something. Something I can’t explain.

Stash was right, I feel it.

And that scares me more than anything.

“Alpha Theo,” I heard Zane running up to me. “You good?”

“What’s good about the night?” I growled.

Zane smirked. “So that’s a no”

I shot him a look,but just Zane shrugged.

“Don’t look at me like that. Everyone can feel it,man. The tension between you two”

I didn’t reply,my mind muddled up.

“Yeah,” I finally muttered. “That’s what I’m afraid”

“It’s nothing to worry about. You’re just paranoid about nothing” Zane patted my shoulder.

I didn’t reply. Maybe he’s right.

I’m just worried over Stash’s silly antics.

[it’s not silly. You’re in denial] Stash yelled in protest.

After a while, I looked over the Packhouse.

“I asked to become her Alpha,”

Zane’s eyes widened.

“You asked to become what? Man,what’s” he exclaimed. “What did she say?”

“A little more time?” I say.

“Are you sure about this?” Zane asked.

I looked at him, nodded.“Never been more sure of my decision”

“Alright. I’m always on your side. Go for it” Zane says.

“Thank you,Zane”
