Chapter 30
–Kaia–
Theo did not come to see me in the night. After the woman’s arrival.
And I ended up sleeping, feeling a little disappointed.
In the morning, I hadn’t meant to wander.

I’d been heading toward the council chamber to tell Theo breakfast was getting cold – nothing more.
But voices stopped me just around the corner.
One sharp. One is soft. Too soft.
I froze.
Theo’s low growl carried through the door. “You should leave.”
Then came the woman’s voice. smooth and venom-sweet. “You always did hate facing the truth.”
My heartbeat thudded in my ears.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Tall, elegant, with shiny dark hair catching my gaze even though I didn’t intend to look.
She gives off the kind of confidence only danger wears well.
She smelled faintly of roses and wine.
Our eyes met.
She stopped right in front of me.
Scan me up and down. Then smiled, curved slowly and knowing.
“You must be the lucky stray,” she murmured, still looking at me like I was beneath her.
Maybe, she’s right.
Then brushed past me as though I were invisible.
I stood frozen, staring after her.

Inside, something crashed the sound of glass shattering against the wall.

My fingers tightened in my palm.
I didn’t go in. Not yet.

I just stood there, hearing Theo’s ragged exhale and my own pulse hammering like it wanted out of my chest.
For some reason, my wolf stirred restless, uneasy.
—
When I finally turned to leave, Maliya was waiting at the end of the hall.
Her eyes flicked toward the door.
“Rough time for the Alpha?”
I tried to smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes. “Seems like it.”
“Don’t mind her,” Maliya said quietly. “Elara’s always been troubled. The kind that thinks she can still bite what she’s already lost.”
My chest ached in a way I couldn’t explain. “She looked like someone used to winning.”
Maliya looked behind.
“I think we should leave, Kaia” she muttered. “The Alpha is in a bad mood. I’m afraid he won’t like us here”
“Oh, right?” I faked a smile. “You should go back first. I have something to take care of”
I moved through the pack house quietly, the scent of hot pie and honey thick in the air.
Maliya had gone ahead to the kitchen, but I didn’t go back yet. I wasn’t ready to face everyone yet.
Afraid the woman would be at the breakfast table.
As the new member of the pack, I’m mandated to eat with everyone in the pack dining hall for a few days.
Two omegas stood near the open doorway of the garden, their voices low but sharp enough for a wolf to overhear them.
“Did you hear the woman from Alpha Theo’s past is back”
“Elara, right? I thought she left for good after….Well, you know”
“Apparently, she’s not ready to fully give up yet”
Their words hit harder than they should have.
My steps faltered.
I didn’t move. I couldn’t.
A laugh, small and cruel, followed.

Chapter 30
“Why would she come back now of all time”
“Do you think it has something to do with Alpha Theo and that stray girl, Kaia?”
“Maybe Kaia’s arrival threatens her. She’s here to remind everyone who’s in charge”
“The stray girl must feel really out of place. It doesn’t look like she belongs here”
They chatted and walked away while I stood there.
Confused.
Who’s this Elara? And what’s going on with her and Theo?
I stood there for a long time, the weight of it pressing on my chest.
For some reason, I felt a lump in my chest thinking of whatever is going on with Elara and Theo.
She seems to have a deep relationship with him. The pack too.
My wolf stirred uneasily, a low hum of emotion oozing from her.
“Don’t listen to them,” my wolf murmured.”They are wrong”
But I didn’t listen.
My chest wells up with anger.
I had no reason to feel so angry but I know I am very angry.
I had to let it all out.
So, I ran to the training grounds.
Theo brought me here to show me around one time.
I head straight to the punching bag once I arrive there.
The wolf in charge looked at me weirdly but I didn’t mind. Didn’t ask questions.
I begin punching the bag.
My first hit hurts. It seems my body forgot how to be a warrior.
I continued beating the punching bag.
Elara’s smug face came into my mind as I punched.
I continued punching and punching while my chest heaved with intense pain.
“Slow down, Kaia. You’ll get hurt” My wolf, Tamara worries.

It feels good to hear her speak. My heart warmed up.
But I didn’t stop, I shrugged and kept punching the bag.
My palms were raw from the training bags, but I kept striking anyway.
Harder. Faster.
Like I could punch the feelings out of my chest.
I heard footsteps approaching.
I didn’t turn. I didn’t need to.
Only one person walked like that.
Theo.
He stopped a few feet behind me, silent at first, watching my movements.
Theo asked. “Kaia… can we talk?”
I didn’t pause. I didn’t even bother to look at him.
Kaia I breathlessly asked “Why? Is Elara not available?”
Theo must have blinked, taken aback.
“Kaia, that’s not—”
I groaned. “Go talk to her. She’s better company. Higher rank. Makes more sense, right?”
My voice was clipped, cold but my hands were trembling slightly.
I hoped he didn’t notice.
He did.
Of course, he wouldn’t miss a chance to notice everything.
Theo stepped closer.
“Kaia. Stop”
He wasn’t commanding. He was pleading,
I finally turned, breathing hard, cheeks flushed from training and emotion.
“Why are you here, Theo? I’m nothing to you.” I clutched my chest.
His jaw tightened. “Don’t say that.”

“Why not?” I snapped. “It’s true. I’m a stray. A guest. Someone you gave a room to because you pitied me.”
My voice cracked, and I hated that it did.
He opened his mouth, but I cut him off.
“And don’t pretend you care. Ten hours, Theo. Ten. And you didn’t even check on me. Not once.”
The words hung between us, heavier than I expected.
Theo stared at me like I had just confessed something earth-shifting.
“Kaia…” He stepped closer, softer now.
“You wanted me to check on you?”
My breath hitched and I looked away.
At the ground.
At anything but his eyes.
“Forget it. Just… go back to Elara.”
Theo exhaled sharply, like the words physically hit him.
“No,” he said quietly. I’m right where I want to be.”
I turned away, grabbing my headscarf
Theo stepped in front of me instinctively, blocking the path.
“Kaia, just wait. Let me explain.” Theo said, staring at me.
I lifted my chin, not letting any emotion slip.
“Explain what? That your past came knocking and you opened the door?”
He flinched, and for a moment something raw flickered in his eyes.
But I didn’t give him a chance to recover.
“Theo, we don’t owe each other anything. You don’t have to report to me.” I barked.
My emotions were rising rapidly.
Theo said. “That’s not…Kaia, you’re twisting this.”
I laughed once, not amused, just exhausted.
“No. I’m accepting reality. Something you should try once in a while.”

Chapter 30
:
He reached for my arm gently, fingers brushing my sleeve.
His eyes pleading. “Kaia… please.”
When I heard him say “please” I froze for half a second. just half.
No Alpha talked that softly. No Alpha said please.
Which only made everything worse.
I stepped back, breaking his touch.
“Don’t do that. Don’t sound like you care. It’s confusing.”
Theo’s breath caught.
“Confusing for who?” he asked, almost quietly.
My throat tightened, but my face didn’t betray it.
“For me,” I said. “And I don’t want to be confused.”
I brushed past him before he could block me again.
He moved too, letting me go.
I was already walking away.
“Kaia!”
His voice echoed across the training grounds, frustrated, helpless.
I didn’t turn around. Didn’t look back.
If I did, I’m afraid I might have stayed.
And I couldn’t afford that.
