Chapter 61
–Elara–
I got back to my room, ready to rest for a bit.
:
But I heard footsteps approaching my door, and I didn’t need to guess who it was.
I could tell who it was before I saw the person.
Dad-he walked with his steps measured, deliberate.
“Elara,” he said, walking in. “What is wrong with you?”
“What? Have I done anything wrong?” I asked.
He said. “You need to stop trying to ruin the alliance.”

I didn’t bother looking at him. “Why? What’s wrong Father? Afraid someone will finally challenge you?”
“You have no idea what’ve done so far” His eyes flicked toward me, hard and unreadable. “If you defy the council, if you resist… You will be responsible. For more than just yourself. For lives you can’t even imagine.”
I lifted my chin, a smirk tugging at my lips. “Responsible? Since when have I cared about rules that weren’t mine?”
He took a step closer, and the air between us thickened.
“This isn’t about you, Elara. It’s about the pack. There are things… things I cannot tell you, but they depend on your compliance.”
I froze for a moment, letting the words sink in.
My amusement faltered slightly. “You’re scared, Father. Scared, I’ll do what you can’t control.”
He exhaled slowly, calm but dangerous. “Fear has nothing to do with it. The pack… its stability… hinges on decisions made long before you were involved. One wrong move, and it will all unravel. You need to understand that, even if I can’t explain it fully.”
I studied him, hiding the prickling unease inside. “So, I obey, or the pack suffers. How noble of you.”
He met my gaze, unflinching. “I’m telling you this because I care, Elara. Not for your sake but for theirs. Remember that.”
“Why do I have to sacrifice what I want to please everyone?” I asked.
“Elara,” Father says, “I’ve always done everything that makes you happy. This time, I can’t help you because you brought this upon yourself”
“How is wanting better for myself so wrong, Father?” I asked. “Any other girl in my position would have done

the same”

“Yes, they would have done the same” Father replied, and my heart rejoiced. “But, they would have remained where they were not returning to fight for something they had already lost”
“Are you saying I shouldn’t have returned, Father?” I asked, feeling hurt.
“Yes, Elara. You went away with someone you wanted, you shouldn’t have returned” he replied.
“You should be on my side, father” I protested my anger rising.
“I have always been on your side,” he replied.”This time, think of everyone else not yourself. For once”
I swallowed, pretending not to shiver. “Noted, Father. But don’t assume I won’t play my own game.”
Father didn’t say anything. He turned and left.
No matter what, I won’t let them interfere in my plans.
I’m not backing down until I get what I want and I don’t care who gets hurt.
I took a deep breath.
“It doesn’t matter who stays by my side, I won’t back down. Even if I have to do the unthinkable”
I made up my mind and walked out of my chambers in search of Lucien.
He’s the only one apart from Cara, who has the same goal as me.
We should team up. To defeat Theo and Kaia.
It’s a win-win situation.
I found Lucien exactly where I expected him to be.
Loitering in the east hallway like a bored prince with nothing meaningful to do.
The moment he saw me, his expression twisted with amusement.
He didn’t even let me reach him before he spoke.
“If you’re here to cry again,” he said, “I don’t have the patience.”
Typical. Lucien always struck first.
Acting like he was something when all he was was a bored prince with no powers.
I steadied my breathing, lifting my chin. “Relax. I’m not here to argue.”
He laughed under his breath. “You? Not arguing? That’ll be the day.”

I kept my steps slow, controlled. I refused to let him see how badly my insides were burning.
“I came to offer you a deal.”
That got his attention. His brows lifted. “A deal? From you? This should be good.”
“Don’t flatter yourself,” I snapped. “I need something. And you need something too.”
His smirk faded into something more calculating. “Go on.”
This was the part I hated-the part that tasted like swallowing glass.

“I’m not asking you to reject me,” I said. “I know the engagement stands. You’ve made that painfully clear.”
He shrugged. “Because I’m not doing you any favours.”
“I’m not asking for favours.” I met his gaze. “You think I want to be tied to you forever? You’re delusional.”
His eyes narrowed. “Then what do you want?”
I stepped closer, keeping my voice low. “Theo’s little outcast is becoming a problem. And Theo… he’s slipping further from me every day. You want power. I want Theo. Our goals align more than you realise.”
Lucien laughed, quiet and cruel. “You want Theo? Sweetheart, he chose someone else. Someone without a powerless wolf. That’s what really burns you, isn’t it?”
A stab cut through my chest, but I held still. “This isn’t about jealousy.”
“Everything you do is about jealousy.”
I ignored that. I had to. “I know you, Lucien. You’ve always wanted the throne. Theo becoming Alpha instead of you, his weak heart and all, it kills you.”
He didn’t deny it.
Good.
I guess we both have something on each other. We are heading somewhere.
“Listen,” I said. “Theo’s pack is watching him closely. Any mistake, any sign of instability… they’ll doubt him. You could use that to your advantage. I can help you.”
He blinked, surprised. “Help me?”
“Yes. You want the throne? Fine. I can help you look like the more stable heir. The more reliable heir. And while the council focuses on you… I’ll get Kaia out of the way.”
Lucien’s smirk reappeared, wider this time. “So that’s the truth. Remove the girl, get the Alpha.”
“I don’t need commentary,” I said sharply. “Just cooperation.”

He pushed off the railing and stepped into my space, eyes glittering with something dark and hungry. “And what do I get in return?”
“An alliance,” I said. “Temporary strategy and mutual benefits. You support me, I support you. And neither of us ends up with the future we don’t want.”
Lucien studied me for a long moment. Too long.
My pulse thudded in my throat.
Finally, he said, “You and I have hated each other since we were children.”
“Not hate,” I murmured. “Competition.”
Lucien’s smile deepened. “That’s adorable, coming from the girl who always came second.”
Anger flared hot in my chest. “Do you accept it or not?”
He moved past me, brushing my shoulder with calculated disdain.
“I’ll think about it,” he said.
I grabbed his wrist. “Lucien-”
He turned back, smirking. “Don’t worry. If I decide to help you, you’ll know. And if I decide not to… you’ll definitely know.”
He walked away without another word.
I stood alone in the hallway, my fists trembling with vein-shaking fury.
I could feel the vibration under my skin.
I hated him. But I hate that I needed him even more.
And that was the most infuriating part of all.
