Chapter 66
–Lucien–
Theo’s collapsing again was not shocking.

It was inevitable. That guy has a weak heart, I wouldn’t be surprised if he died sooner rather than later.
I was standing at the edge of the corridor when the news reached me.
Zane’s voice rang out, giving out instructions while trying to conceal Theo’s collapse.
But it was too late; Theo’s condition was far too serious for him to hide.
The mighty Alpha Theo was down again.
I didn’t rush forward. I didn’t plan on going around pretending to care about him when I clearly don’t.
I only smiled.
Because, this is my chance. Theo suffering a huge setback would only benefit me.
It’s better to seize the opportunity than pretend to care about a dying, weak-hearted Alpha.
It’s his karma for becoming Alpha over me.
I was plotting in my head when my mother found me a few minutes later.
She walked up to me, her face carefully arranged.
Concern was etched on her face for the pack, worrying about her husband and restrained grief for her
stepson.
Anyone watching would think she was devastated.
I knew better.
“This changes things,” she said quietly, stepping beside me.
I didn’t look at her. “It confirms the spoken doubts.”
She exhaled slowly. “The Elders will notice. They already question his judgment. Now they’ll question his body too.”
I finally turned to her. “And when Alphas start questioning whether their leader can survive a full season?”
Mother’s mouth tightened with calculations.
“They start looking for alternatives,” she said.

Chapter 66
Silence stretched between us, heavy with shared understanding.
Theo had always been the problem.
It wasn’t because he was cruel or incompetent but because he existed.

It was because he had been born first and the Alpha gene had chosen him despite his fragile heart, despite everything.
Despite my being stronger and better than him.
“The girl,” mother said at last, her voice sharpening. “Kaia.”
I scoffed. “She’s irrelevant.”
“She’s a liability,” she corrected. “And liabilities are useful when handled correctly.”
I raised an eyebrow. “You plan to blame her?”
“I plan to use her presence,” mother replied smoothly. “A stray with a powerless wolf. There wasn’t a strong enough bond to hold him steady.”
I thought of the way the pack had watched tonight.
The murmurs and the way doubt crept like rot.
Theo’s collapsing after defying tradition and choosing Kaia was the icing on the cake toppers.
Theo was supposed to be the strongest one, I mean, he has the Alpha gene and everything, yet his heart keeps failing, proving that Alpha genes mean nothing.
“The Elders won’t need much encouragement,” I said slowly. “They’ll connect the dots themselves.”
Mother smiled coldly and was satisfied.
“We don’t push,” she said. “We let them see.”
“And when they finally do?” I asked.
“They’ll demand stability.”
I laughed softly. “And stability looks like someone who doesn’t drop to the floor clutching his chest.”
Her gaze flicked to me.
“Exactly.”
I straightened, rolling my shoulders, already feeling the shift in the air.
Power doesn’t announce itself. It waits for the right moment to step in.

Chapter 66
Theo wasn’t dead, not yet at least.
But the pack had seen him fall, not once but multiple times.
And once they saw weakness, they would never unsee it.
“Let them comfort him,” I said calmly. “Let them rally around him. It’ll make the fall harder.”
Mother placed a hand on my arm, squeezing once.
“This time,” she murmured, “we won’t miss a chance to get him away from the top.”
I looked towards Theo’s room, where he was getting treated.
A smile crept onto my lips as I was already imagining myself as Alpha.
Even if he doesn’t die, his reign would come to an abrupt end.
I will make sure that’s the case.
–Elara–
I was still smiling when the door opened.
It wasn’t a polite smile, it was a full-on laugh, a hysterical one.
I was over the moon and who wouldn’t be?
Theo and Kaia were not mates.
The bond mate had failed in front of the whole pack and most especially in front of the elders.
I watched with my pulse racing as their wolves recoiled from each other like strangers.
They were both shocked and confused, especially that dumb stray, Kaia.
Her face was knitted with pain, as it should be.
I closed my eyes now, replaying it, savouring every moment of it.
I leaned back against the cushions, letting the relief wash through me.

Now the circle had no excuse. They would be forced to correct their mistakes and make Theo choose me as his Luna instead of Kaia.
The door opened again.
Lucien walked in, his eyes shining brightly, lips curved in a grin that matched my own.
“Well,” he said, clapping his hands once, “that went beautifully. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a full moon more”

I laughed softly. “Neither have I.”
:
He studied me, then tilted his head. “I’m curious though. Bonds don’t just fail. Not like that.”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Lucien stepped closer. “What did you do, Elara?
I poured myself a drink before answering. My hands were steady.
“That’s what everyone believes,” I said, standing up.
Lucien’s gaze followed me. “And belief is fragile.”
I turned to him, lifting my glass. “Exactly.”
He pushed off the wall and came closer. “So tell me,” he said quietly, “what did
For a moment, I considered lying. Then I decided he’d earned the truth.
I set the glass down.
you do?”
“Two nights ago,” I began, “when Theo was tearing the packhouse apart looking for me…”
Lucien’s lips twitched. “I wondered where you vanished.”

“I was already deep in the woods,” I said. “Walking way past the old borders, behind where the guards patrol.”
His brows rose. “The Shadow coven territory. What were you doing there?”
I rose slowly, meeting his gaze.
“Paying insurance,” I said. “The kind that doesn’t leave fingerprints.”
His smile widened. “I knew it.”
The memory surfaced before I could stop it
Two days earlier.
Theo had been looking for me. I’d made sure of that. Let him notice my absence.
I wanted him to worry and come searching for me like the worried guard dog he was when we were still together.
While he searched the packhouse, I was already deep in the woods.
The Shadow Coven had been waiting.
They are always waiting for people with undying desires to show up and seek their help.

“What do you wish to silence?” The leader asked me.
They didn’t ask me what and why I was there.
“The bond,” I’d said. “Between an Alpha and a woman who doesn’t deserve it.”
Lucien watched my face closely as I spoke now.

“They warned me,” I continued. “That mate bonds are the goddess’s gift to us. That interference comes at a
cost.”
He scoffed. “And you paid it.”
“Yes.” My voice softened. “Gladly.”
I’d had me standing inside a circle, my heart pounding, as they chanted words that tasted like ash.
Mute the pull, just long enough to let doubt take root.
Pain had split through my chest when the magic took hold. I welcomed it.
I knew the pain would go away in no time but the power I would get wouldn’t.
Lucien exhaled slowly. “You didn’t destroy it.”
“No,” I said. “I’m not reckless.”
I met his eyes. “I only disrupted it for a while.”
His smile returned. “Brilliant. You blocked fate,” he said. “That’s bold.”
I shrugged. “Fate only matters if people believe in it.”
“And now?” he asked. “What’s next?”
I walked past him, stopping at the window.
“The Council will of course panic,” I said. “Theo will be weakened by his illness and the failed mate bond. And they’ll come crawling back to the safest option.”
I turned, smiling. “You.”
Lucien laughed. “Remind me never to underestimate you.”
I met his gaze, calm and certain.
“This was only the beginning, Lucien. We still have so much to do.”
I picked up my glass again. “Now the Council has proof that Theo is unstable and too weak to rule the pack”
“And Kaia?” he asked.

My jaw tightened, just for a second.
“She was already deemed a mistake,” I said. “And the pack doesn’t forgive mistakes.”
Lucien laughed. “So what’s next, mastermind?”
I walked to the window, staring out at the packhouse lights below.
Somewhere out there, Theo was probably questioning everything, his weak heart might worsen from overthinking about it.
“The Council will demand stability,” I said. I turned back to him. “And they already have a solution already in waiting.”
Lucien’s eyes gleamed. “You.”
“Exactly, me.”
He studied me for a long moment, then nodded.
“You know this isn’t over, right? Bonds don’t like being silenced.”
I smiled, “Neither do I.”
Lucien laughed under his breath. “I’m impressed, Elara.”
I lifted my chin. “Oh, there’s more for you to see, Lucien. You’ll love it here”
