The Real Heiress Is Coming Back (Hannah Carter) novel Chapter 106

Chapter 106

“I know how to demolish a meal, huh?” Hannah joked.

Arthur couldn’t help but laugh.

Don’t let Hannah’s slim figure fool you. She could eat with the best of them. While most girls just pick at their food to keep their waistlines, Hannah always cleaned her plate and had a serious weakness for anything sweet.

“Here, take this back. But seriously, how did you get out?” Arthur asked.

He’d spent the whole afternoon trying to find someone to help bail Hannah out, but as soon as people heard Gemma and Victor were involved, they didn’t dare get involved, saying Gemma and Victor were way out of their league.

It wasn’t until Felicity called to tell him Hannah was back that he finally got some peace of mind.

He was still curious why Gemma and the others let Hannah off so easily. After asking around, he found out Tristan and Ryan had shown up at the station.

‘Wait, Hannah knows Tristan too?’ Arthur blinked in surprise.

“It wasn’t you? Then who was it?” Hannah asked, her brows furrowing in confusion.

Suddenly, a face so outrageously handsome it could make angels jealous flashed through her mind. ‘Was it Barnaby?’ she thought.

At Skycrest House.

Barnaby sat on the sofa, dressed in a fitted black shirt and slim trousers that emphasized his long legs. His long, defined fingers wrapped around a wine glass, swirling the red wine inside with casual grace.

Across from him, Tristan sat back, holding a cigar in his left hand and his glass by the rim in his right, making the ice and liquor rattle noisily.

“Barnaby, I admit I messed up before. Let me make it up to you with three drinks,” Tristan said with a grin.

He knocked back three drinks without hesitation, then leaned in and continued, “See, it’s not just about splashing cash. There’s something else you need.”

Barnaby raised an eyebrow, giving Tristan the go-ahead to finish.

“Power.” Tristan declared.

That was the biggest takeaway Tristan had after seeing Hannah at the police station today.

He’d met all kinds of women, but Hannah was on a whole different level, stunning looks, a great figure, cool and aloof, and a presence that made you think twice before approaching. She wasn’t someone just anyone could handle.

Barnaby just stared at him, not saying a word.

“But seriously, you’ve been laying low way too much lately. Even that piece of work Gemma thinks she can push Hannah around.” Tristan said, flicking ash from his cigar.

Barnaby took a slow sip of his wine. “Winter’s coming. Time to bring down the Baker family for good.”

“Seriously, man, you’re way too slow with Hannah. Nobody out there even knows she’s your girl. Want me to help you out?”

Tristan said, raising an eyebrow.

If Hannah hadn’t already been claimed by Barnaby, Tristan would’ve definitely tried chasing her himself, just for the thrill of

The more aloof and hard-to-get a woman was, the more it fired up his urge to conquer.

“No need. You can leave now.” Barnaby said coldly, not bothering with any courtesy.

“Teh, boss me around and then tell me to scram? Only you would dare treat your buddy like this!” Tristan grumbled, clearly annoyed.

But he still tipped his head back and finished his drink, then got up.

“It…”

Just then, the electronic lock clicked open at the front door, and it swung wide.

As soon as Hannah stepped inside, she was hit by a thick cloud of smoke and booze. Her pretty brows furrowed, and those alluring eyes of hers flicked over to the sofa.

Smoke hung heavy in the air, and several open bottles of liquor were scattered across the coffee table. Barnaby was sitting there, his wine glass still in hand, not even bothering to set it down.

Her gaze was icy and unwavering as she stared straight at Barnaby, giving nothing away.

She’d come all the way back just to thank him face-to-face, only to catch him sneaking a drink behind her back.

His wounds weren’t even healed yet. He was supposed to be off booze and spicy food.

‘I was only gone for a day and he’s already ignoring doctor’s orders. God knows what else he’s been hiding from me, Hannah thought, suspicion flickering in her eyes.

Barnaby hadn’t expected Hannah to pop in out of nowhere. He was totally busted.

‘Wait, didn’t she go back to Scott Villa?’ Barnaby wondered, surprise flickering across his face.

The next moment, he raised his glass to Tristan and spoke.

“This one’s for you, Tristan. Thanks for helping me out with such a big favor. I’ll pay you back a hundredfold someday. I’ll drink this, you do as you please,” Barnaby said.

With that, he tipped his head back and finished the wine in one go.

He coughed a few times, as if the wine had gone down the wrong way.

Tristan: ‘What the-?!’

‘Weren’t you the one who told me to scram?’

‘Why does it suddenly look like I’m the one making things hard for you?’ Tristan thought, totally confused.

‘Shit, did I just become the fall guy out of nowhere?’ Tristan griped to himself.

‘Whatever, if it’s for my bro’s happiness, I’ll take the blame,’ Tristan thought, rolling his eyes.

‘But seriously, Barnaby, you really gonna let her keep you on such a tight leash?’ Tristan couldn’t help but sigh to himself.

“Mr. Pierce, thanks for today. This is my homemade remedy, just a little token of appreciation,” Hannah said, pulling a small

black box from her bag and handing it to him.

The black box made her pale, slender fingers look almost ethereal.

Her cool, elegant face showed a hint of an enigmatic smile, and Tristan couldn’t help but think, ‘Is she really giving me a life- saving pill, or is this the kiss of death?

But hey, if a gorgeous sister-in-law gives you a gift, even if it’s poison, he’d gladly accept it.

He took the box and casually stuffed it into his pocket. “No worries. Just buy me a drink next time. See ya.”

Little did Tristan know that pill would end up saving his life for real, but that’s a story for another day.

“Sweetie, I really didn’t mean to drink,” Barnaby said, his handsome face looking genuinely innocent.

As soon as the door closed, Barnaby’s good looks took on an innocent vibe.

He continued, “I was worried about you, but I couldn’t go pick you up myself, so I asked Tristan to help out. He loves to drink, so I just went along with it. I promise, I really didn’t drink much.”

Hannah eyed the coffee table, spotting a bunch of bottles, all halfway gone.

‘Not much? Seriously?’ she thought, her face giving nothing away.

Seeing Hannah wasn’t having it and even turned to leave, Barnaby suddenly sprang to his feet and swiped everything off the table.

A sharp crash of breaking glass echoed through the room.

Hannah spun around at the noise, saw Barnaby slumped over the coffee table, and hurried over to help him. “Are you okay?”

“I’m not okay!” Barnaby whined, putting on his best wounded act.

Hannah gave him a quick once-over, but didn’t spot a single scratch. ‘Seriously?’ she thought, unimpressed.

“Sweetie, I know I messed up. Please don’t be mad at me, okay?” Barnaby said, pulling his best puppy eyes even though he knew exactly what he was doing.

“I’m not mad,” Hannah said, keeping her voice cool and her expression unreadable. Even if she was a little annoyed inside, she wasn’t about to let him see it.

Barnaby couldn’t help but admire her flawless face, then put on his best wounded look. “But you’re totally ignoring me, and now you’re just gonna walk out on me?”

Hannah paused for a moment.

“I was just going to put together something to help with your hangover,” Hannah said, sounding a little exasperated.

She’d only managed to get out so quickly, and even get one over on Gemma, thanks to Barnaby. She really owed it all to him and the people he sent to help her out.

She just couldn’t stand watching him wreck his health like this. She was mad at him, but even more, her heart ached for him.

Barnaby’s lips curled into a smirk. “No need. I can handle my liquor.”

Back when he was undercover, he’d gone through special training. He could down over a liter of hard liquor and still stay sharp.

Hannah really had nothing to say.

Even though Barnaby said he didn’t need it. Hannah still went to mix up a remedy for his hangover. She knew he was still taking antibiotics, so she had to keep an eye on him.

Barnaby went along with everything, acting all sweet and innocent, and after what felt like forever, he finally gave her his best puppy-dog eyes and said, “Even Tristan got a gift. How come I don’t get one?”

Hannah lost her words.

She knew he was totally faking it, but she just couldn’t bring herself to burst his bubble or say no.

Suddenly, she remembered the deal she’d made with the Master of the Scepter House. The best present she could give Barnaby right now was to get him back to full health ASAP.

So she had to get her hands on that century-old ginseng medicine, fast. As for those photos the Master wanted… well, that was another story.
