Chapter 182

Barnaby caught sight of Daisy approaching and, without hesitation, ended the video call, slipping his phone away.

“Barnaby, were you just video chatting with someone?” Daisy asked, her smile warm and playful.

She wore a classic Chanel black-and-white tweed suit, her long hair flowing freely beneath a black beret. She looked sophisticated and elegant, radiating a gentle, irresistible charm.

“None of your business,” Barnaby replied coldly, turning and heading off in the opposite direction down the corridor.

Daisy watched his icy figure retreat, a subtle bitterness welling up inside her.

Just moments ago, there was unmistakable warmth in his gaze while he was video chatting with someone else. But the instant she appeared, all that warmth vanished, replaced by a chill.

She wished Barnaby would look at her with that same gentle gaze, just once.

“Barnaby, wait for me,” Daisy called out, trying to catch up, but her high heels made it impossible to move quickly. Barnaby didn’t bother to wait for her.

Suddenly, her heel twisted, and Daisy nearly lost her balance. She grabbed onto a pillar, a jolt of pain shot through her ankle.

“Barnaby, can you wait? I twisted my ankle,” she called out, hoping he’d finally turn around.

But he just kept walking, didn’t even look back, and vanished behind the fake mountain.

Daisy just stood there, speechless.

She had no choice but to rub her own ankle.

After a while, footsteps echoed from the end of the corridor. Daisy looked up hopefully, thinking maybe Barnaby had come back for her. But it was only Ronin.

Even though it wasn’t Barnaby himself, Daisy couldn’t help but feel a bit pleased. She figured Ronin must’ve shown up because Barnaby sent him.

‘Maybe Barnaby isn’t as cold as I thought,’ Daisy mused to herself.

“Ms. Reese, Barnaby wants you to hurry up. Don’t keep everyone waiting,” Ronin said.

Barnaby’s already annoyed about getting dragged back for this matchmaking thing. If she keep stalling, he’s seriously going

to blow a fuse.

Daisy just stood there, speechless.

“I accidentally twisted my ankle. It hurts a bit,” she said, frowning,

“You really twisted it?” Ronin asked, sounding skeptical.

He was pretty sure she was just pulling a trick to get Barnaby’s attention.

Daisy just stood there, speechless.

“It really hurts, and I think it’s starting to swell,” Daisy said as she took off her high heels.

If she hadn’t been wearing tights, she honestly would’ve taken them off too, just to show him she wasn’t faking it.

Ronin saw she wasn’t faking it and just nodded, a little dismissively. “Hmm…”

He stroked his chin, then said, “Aren’t you a doctor? Can’t you handle it yourself? Are you just gonna sit here and wait for it to heal on its own? Everyone’s waiting, you know.”

Daisy just stood there, speechless.

Is Ronin really just being a typical guy, or is he doing this on purpose?’ Daisy wondered.

‘Couldn’t he at least help me out a little?’ she thought.

In the Croft family’s guest room, Hannah was staring at her WhatsApp chat with Barnaby.

She could still hear that woman’s voice from earlier.

It was gentle, a little flirty, and somehow familiar. It could have been Daisy.

Barnaby hadn’t said a word. He just hung up the video call.

Then he sent a message: [Something came up. I’ll talk to you later.]

Hannah’s eyes grew serious. After a moment’s hesitation, she shot Barnaby a message: [Who was that woman?]

Someone knocked on the door.

“Hannah, it’s me,”

came Mavis’s muffled voice from outside the door.

Hannah quickly changed and went to open the door. “Mrs. Croft, is there something you need?”

“You must be hungry. I had the kitchen prepare some food for you,” Mavis said, stepping aside to reveal Owen behind her.

Owen was pushing a food cart, and when he saw Hannah fresh out of the shower, her hair still damp and her ears a little pink, he paused for a second, taking in the sight.

“Hannah,” he greeted her shyly.

“Thanks,” Hannah said, her stomach rumbling. She stepped back to let him/wheel the cart into the room.

“Don’t worry about what happened with my Mom. The Croft family didn’t mean anything by it. It’s just that Teresa can be a little snobby, so that’s why there was a misunderstanding this afternoon Sorry if we made you uncomfortable,” Mavis said, sounding apologetic.

As Mavis spoke, she walked into the room and set the dishes down on the table.

Hannah didn’t pay it any mind. She just twisted her wet hair up with a towel.

Owen happened to catch sight of her delicate, pale neck, and a sudden rush of heat flooded his cheeks.

It was the first time he’d ever seen his goddess fresh out of the shower, honestly, the sight was absolutely lethal.

“Mom, let’s give Hannah some space to cat,” Owen said to Mavis.

He quickly wheeled the cart out of the room, leading the way.

Mavis caught the flush on his ears and couldn’t help but feel pleased. ‘Looks like my bookworm son is finally coming out of

his shell. Maybe he won’t be stuck in his books forever,’ she thought.

She told Owen to head back first, choosing to stay and look after Hannah herself.

Hannah had no idea what was running through their minds. She just washed her hands, sat down, and started eating, not thinking much of it.

Hannah didn’t really talk while she ate, and she had this quiet, classy vibe about her. Watching her, Mavis just liked her more and more.

After Hannah finished her meal, Mavis couldn’t hold back anymore and asked, “Hannah, what’s your impression of Owen?”

Hannah dabbed at her mouth with a napkin and said, “Owen’s great, but you know, sexual orientation isn’t something you can just fix. It’s not a disease.”

Mavis was left staring, totally confused.

She understood every word, but when Hannah put them together, she had absolutely no clue what she meant.

Knock knock, someone was at the door again.

Hannah opened it to find Teresa standing there, a servant trailing behind her with a cart full of treats.

“Ms. Carter, I brought you some pastries,” Teresa said, smiling warmly.

After Hannah managed to cure Pamela, Teresa had to admit, this girl was the real deal. Hannah definitely knew her stuff.

If she couldn’t push someone like Hannah out, then it was smarter to keep her close and stay on her good side.

So when Teresa heard Mavis was sending over dinner, she made sure her staff brought over some pastries too, just to compete.

If Mavis was trying to win Hannah over, Teresa wasn’t about to let her have the upper hand.

“Thanks…”

Hannah hadn’t even finished before Teresa cut her off.

“No need to thank me. About what happened with my Mom, please don’t take it to heart. The Croft family didn’t mean anything by it.

It’s just that Mavis isn’t the best with people, and she picked the wrong doctor, so that’s why there was a misunderstanding earlier. Sorry for any offense,” Teresa said smoothly.

Hannah just stood there, speechless.

‘What’s with these two Croft sisters-in-law?’ she wondered.

‘Did they seriously not plan this whole thing together?’ she thought.

“Ms. Carter, this is my son, Magnus. What do you think of his looks?” Teresa asked, pulling up a photo on her phone and handing it over to Hannah.

Hannah just stood there, speechless.

“Maybe you two should go outside, talk it over, and then come back when you’ve got your story straight?” Hannah said, her tone dripping with sarcasm.

Hannah threw the door open so Teresa could see Mavis was already in the room.

Awkward silence hung in the air as the two sisters-in-law stared each other down.

Teresa was stunned.

Mavis was at a loss for words.

Once Hannah had finally ushered both of them out, the room was blissfully quiet at last.

She glanced at her WhatsApp, not sure what Barnaby was up to, he still hadn’t bothered to reply.

Just imagining him hanging out with some other woman right now left a sour taste in her mouth.

She sent Barnaby another cat peeking emoji, hoping it’d nudge him to finally text her back.

By the time she finished drying her hair, there was still no reply from him.

Hannah didn’t bother waiting any longer, she just called him up.

The call connected, but a woman picked up instead. “Hey, Barnaby’s in the shower. Anything urgent, or should I let him know you called?”
