Chapter 195
Chapter 195
“I can’t forget!” Hannah’s eyes were cold, her voice firm.
Evelyn knew Hannah was stubborn, once she set her mind on something, no one could change it.
Hannah lowered her gaze and added, “And it’s not like it doesn’t matter. Barnaby and I are together now.”
“You!” Evelyn was shocked, her anger rising. “How could you be so clueless? Why would you mess with him?”
She hadn’t spent much time around Barnaby, but she knew plenty about him.
When he first came back to the Thole family, it only took a month for him to attack four servants who tried to look after him.
He was always bristling with hostility, never let his guard down, he made people uneasy, but one couldn’t help feeling a little sony for him too.
The last time she saw him was at the Scott Villa. That troubled kid had grown up, and he gave off a cold, intimidating vibe.
Men like him were ruthless and held immense power. They were not to be crossed lightly; to do so was to risk a price beyond imagination.
“He started it.” Hannah said.
Evelyn pictured Barnaby’s ice-cold face and was just speechless.
She couldn’t deny it, Hannah really was drop-dead gorgeous, like some fairy straight out of a dream. And yeah, she was old. but she wasn’t losing her mind!
“That ice-cold guy actually made the first move?
‘Did Mars just crash into Earth or something?’ Evelyn thought.
“See? With you not around, I just couldn’t help myself,” Hannah teased.
“Don’t try to fool me!” Evelyn shot back, not buying it for a second. ‘She’s just talking nonsense to get me to Kinswood.’ Evelyn thought.
‘Seriously?’ Hannah thought, speechless.
“I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying right here, so stop trying to talk me into it,” Evelyn said firmly.
Hannah, still calm, asked, “Susie set you up this time. What about next time? How many lives do you have for her to mess with?”
Evelyn was silent for a long moment before finally saying, “There won’t be a next time. She knows her father is Lysander
Thole.”.
Hannah knew there was no way Evelyn could hide this from Susie forever, but she hadn’t expected Susie to catch on this
fast.
Thinking back to the loan sharks who’d just shown up, it all clicked for Hannah.
‘This isn’t about collecting a debt. They’re here to take her out!’ Hannah realized.
No way was she letting Evelyn stay here alone now.

“Susie knows now, and the Thole family will find out you’re alive any minute. Whether you want to or not, you have to leave, unless you seriously don’t care about your own safety!” Hannah said.
Hannah continued, “You’ve got two choices. One, you pack up and come with me willingly. Two, I pack for you and carry you out myself.”
In other words, Hannah was ready to get Evelyn out of here by force if she had to.
Evelyn knew Hannah would never hurt her, but she also knew Hannah was stubborn enough to haul her away if it came
down to it.
She understood what Hannah meant. Back when Susie started digging into her parents’ identity, Evelyn should’ve known Susie would try to get recognized by the Thole family.
Whether Susie was accepted by the Thole family or not, people would sooner or later have found out that Hannah and Evelyn were still alive.
They had hidden for over a decade, but there was no way they would have been able to remain hidden indefinitely.
Evelyn gave in with a helpless sigh. “Fine, I’ll go with you. But you have to promise me, no matter what, never go up against the Thole family directly.”
The Thole family had way too much power. Her precious daughter was gone, her son-in-law was thrown in jail for something he didn’t do, and she couldn’t stand the thought of Hannah getting hurt again.
When Evelyn finally agreed, Hannah breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright.”
After that, Hannah helped Evelyn get comfortable and rest, then pitched in with the others to quickly straighten up the living room.
Chloe brought out the food she’d cooked, and everyone gathered around for dinner, just like old times.
After dinner, the bodyguards came back with the results.
“Susie used Evelyn’s ID to borrow the money, but the one who called the shots was their boss, Brick Maddox. He’s the local kingpin in Laurelburg, runs loan shark operations and is deep in the underworld,” the bodyguard reported.
“Alright, let them go, but keep someone watching them,” Hannah nodded.
Susie doesn’t have the clout to order around a guy like Brick in Laurelburg, unless she’s already gotten in touch with the Thole family.
“Yes,” the bodyguard replied, then asked, “When are you heading back, Ms. Carter? I’ll get the car ready for you.”
Hannah knew this was Barnaby’s way of telling her it was time to go.
“Get the car ready. We’ll leave as soon as we finish packing,” Hannah said.
“Yes, Ms..Carter.”
Suddenly, there was a muffled thump from inside the house.
At the sound, Hannah rushed back to Evelyn’s room, finding her grandmother anxiously tearing through drawers and
cabinets.
Even the mattress had been flipped, and the secret box under the headboard was wide open, completely empty.
“What’s wrong?” Hannah asked.

“The things I kept in the secret box are gone!” Evelyn exclaimed.
“What did you keep in there?” Hannah asked.
“Some jewelry Rosalie gave me, some papers she left behind, and a few old photos,” Evelyn replied.
That secret box was so well hidden, even when the loan sharks tore the place apart, they never found it.

Evelyn had never told Hannah about it; only she knew it was there. She’d only ever opened it once, when Susie wouldn’t stop asking about her parents.
Just thinking about Susic made Evelyn’s face fall.
It could only be Susie. If it was just some random thief, no way they’d take all the documents and photos too, Evelyn thought to herself.
Hannah had already figured out who did it, but she was more interested in, “What kind of stuff was in there?”
Evelyn tried to recall. “I couldn’t really understand most of it. Looked like jewelry design drafts, and there was an unfinished necklace. Rosalie left them behind when she brought you home.”
Rosalie used to be a jewelry designer. ‘So those must’ve been her old work, Hannah guessed.
“I’ll make sure to get them back from Susie next time,” Hannah said.
With all her valuables gone, Evelyn didn’t have much left to pack. She just threw a couple of changes of clothes into a bag, and when she stepped outside, the bodyguards already had the car waiting.
Chloe and Joe were waiting in the yard. When they saw Evelyn and Hannah come out, Chloe asked, reluctant to see them go, “Evelyn, Hannah, are you leaving already?”
“Yes, Anna’s planning to open a traditional medicine clinic in Kinswood, and I’m going to help her out,” Evelyn said, her grip lingering on Chloe’s hand, not wanting to let go.
Chloe had lost her parents young, and she and Joe grew up as orphans in the village. Evelyn had always cared for them, so to Chloe, Evelyn was family, her real grandma.
Chloe looked over at her brother Joe, lips parted, but no words came out.
Joe felt the same way, he hated to see Evelyn go. She was the one person they were closest to in the whole village, and once she left, they’d have nothing left tying them to this place.
Plus, Chloe was only eighteen. Her grades weren’t good enough for college, and if she didn’t get out of these mountains, she’d probably end up married off young, having kids before she even got a chance at life.
Joe didn’t want him and his sister trapped here forever, so he finally mustered up the courage to ask Hannah.
“Hannah, could you take us with you? Chloe knows all about medicinal cooking, she could help out. And I… I could drive for you. Just let us stay with you for a while, and we’ll figure out the rest ourselves,” Joe said.
Worried Hannah might say no, Chloe quickly blurted out, “We don’t need much, just give us a place to sleep, we can share a room, and we’ll help out with anything you need…”
Hannah was already thinking the same thing. Once the traditional medicine clinic opened, she’d need extra hands, and these two could really pitch in.
She’d been a little worried the siblings might not want to leave their hometown, but clearly, they were ready for a change.
“Alright,” Hannah said.
