Chapter 201

“Who is it?!” someone said.

“Quick, stop them!” another one commanded.

Suddenly, there was a commotion outside. Hannah held her breath, and the next thing she heard was the office door slamming shut with a bang.

Hannah let out a breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. The room was shrouded in darkness, and she pinched herself hard, using the sting to keep her mind clear.

The footsteps outside grew more and more distant, and after a while, silence settled in. It seemed everyone had finally left.

Hannah flicked on her phone’s flashlight and crawled out from under the desk. She hurried over to the window behind it, yanked the curtain aside, and peered out, there were landscaped bushes outside, fresh green leaves just starting to bud.

This was the backyard, and it was completely deserted.

She pushed the window open and slipped out, quickly looking left and right for any cameras. Not spotting any, she breathed a quiet sigh of relief.

She ducked out of the bushes, brushed the dust off her clothes, and slipped across the grass toward the cobblestone path. Suddenly, someone stepped right into her way.

The guy was dressed in a champagne-colored fitted suit, leaning casually against a streetlamp.

He looked up, his short, slightly wavy hair framing a face so androgynous it was hard to tell if he was a guy or a girl. His skin was porcelain pale, lips curved into a wicked grin.

His eyes, fox-like and upturned, were dangerously charming, and a dark mole under his right eye made him look even more devilishly attractive in the glow of the streetlight.

“So, what were you doing hiding in there?” he drawled, a smirk playing on his lips.

His voice was smooth and playful, dripping with mischief, like he’d been hanging around just waiting for her to show up.

Hannah’s brows knitted together. ‘So it was him who cleared everyone out on purpose,’ she thought.

Not sure if he was friend or foe, she played dumb and said, “I don’t know what you mean.”

The guy caught on instantly, his fox-like eyes sweeping over her, mischief dancing in them.

“You’ve got some serious flexibility. That window was barely a foot wide, but you still squeezed through, must’ve had plenty of practice, huh?

“But that doggy crawl at the end? Not your best look. Next time, try something a little more stylish,” he teased.

Hannah froze, her breath catching in her throat as she shot him a wary look.

‘Wait, he watched me crawl out of that window the whole time?’ Hannah thought, mortified. ‘Seriously? He saw everything?” She could barely meet his eyes.

“So, what were you really doing in there?” he asked, locking eyes with her.

Since she’d been caught, Hannah dropped the act and replied coolly, “What’s it to you?”

The

guy raised an eyebrow. “Wow, so cold? I did just save your ass, you know. Is that really how you treat your life-saver?”

‘Honestly, I could’ve gotten out on my own without his help, Hannah thought.

It just would’ve been a lot more trouble, that’s all.’

Still, she had to admit she owed him a favor. And with the search still going on in the office building behind her, she didn’t want to draw any more attention. So she eased up a bit and asked, “What do you want?”

Seeing this, the guy smirked with obvious amusement and introduced himself without hesitation. “I’m Spencer Lynch. And you are?”

‘Spencer Lynch? As in the Lynch family, the top family among Kinswood’s ten elite families?’ Hannah thought, her mind racing.

The ten elite families under Kinswood’s four great families were all high society big shots. Unless one absolutely had to, one really didn’t want to get on their bad side.

“Hannah Carter,” she replied.

Spencer murmured her name twice, then shot her a devilish smile. “Saved your skin, didn’t I? So, how are you planning to thank me?”

Hannah fired back, “How do you want me to repay you?”

Spencer stepped in close, his fingers tilting up her delicate chin with a teasing touch. “Old saying goes, if someone saves your life, you should offer yourself to them.

“Lucky for you, I happen to like that pretty face of yours. So, how about you be my girlfriend?”

‘Old saying, my ass,’ Hannah scoffed inwardly.

She slapped his hand away. “I refuse.”

Spencer didn’t look the least bit disappointed, like he’d expected her answer all along. Instead, he just doubled down, totally shameless and not taking no for an answer.

“If you’re gonna turn me down, then spill it, what were you doing in there?” His voice was firm, making it clear he wasn’t asking for permission.

He’d already grilled her about it three times. Clearly, this wasn’t just idle curiosity, he wasn’t going to drop it until he got truth. Hannah felt his gaze pressing for answers, and her nerves tightened.

Just then, her phone buzzed in her pocket again. It was probably Barnaby.

She’d already been out here for a while, and Hannah really didn’t have time to mess around with this guy. She just made something up. “I was just trying to dig up some info.”

“What kind of information?” Spencer pressed, refusing to let it go.

“What about you? What are you doing here?” Hannah shot back, sidestepping his question.

the

Staff at the Scepter House always wore uniforms with special emblem on them, it was their signature look. But this guy? No uniform, no emblem.

Besides, this was the admin building. People who came for auctions would be over at the auction tower, not hanging around here.

“Hey, I’m just here to rescue you,” Spencer said with a playful grin.

“And how do I know you’re not the suspect they’re searching for?” Hannah shot back, eyeing him warily.

Spencer just stared at her, speechless.

Seeing she wasn’t as easy to mess with as he’d hoped, Spencer changed his approach.

“If you’re not going to play along, I guess I’ll just have to turn you over to them, Spencer teased, his voice carrying a dangerous edge.

With that, he grabbed Hannah’s hand and hauled her off toward the admin building.

Hannah was startled and tried to break free, but his grip was like iron, way too strong for her to escape.

Suddenly, a stone came flying out of nowhere. Spencer reacted instantly, letting go of Hannah’s hand in a flash.

The stone whizzed right between them and smacked into a wooden chair nearby, leaving a scratch on the surface with a sharp thud.

As Spencer let go of her hand, Hannah caught a glimpse of a jade thumb ring on his left thumb. She couldn’t quite make out the pattern on it, but the sight stuck in her mind.

She paused, a thought flashing through her mind, last time she’d met the Master of the Scepter House, he’d also been wearing a jade thumb ring…

“Get him!”

A fierce yell came from behind.

Hannah spun around and saw several guys in Scepter House security uniforms rushing over. Barnaby was right behind them, walking with that calm, commanding presence.

Hannah’s lashes quivered as she obediently stayed put, nerves on edge while she waited for them to come over. Just keep calm and improvise when they get here,’ she told herself, bracing for whatever might happen next.

But the security guards raced right past her, barely sparing her a glance. Only then did Hannah realize, Spencer had slipped away without her even noticing! ‘Wait, when did he disappear?’ she thought, stunned.

Probably because she was just a girl, only one security guard stuck around, stun baton in hand, just to make sure she wasn’t up to anything.

“Which floor are you from? What are you doing here? Invitation card, let me see it,” he barked.

“Fourth floor. Just stepped out to use the restroom and got lost,” Hannah mumbled, avoiding his gaze as she fished out her invitation card and handed it over.

After confirming the invitation card was real, the guard handed it back to her, then turned to Barnaby, who was approaching with that calm, commanding stride. “Is this the one you’re looking for?”

“Yes,” Barnaby said, his eyes landing on Hannah with a hint of concern. “You alright?”

Hannah glanced back and forth between Barnaby and the guard, shook her head, then dropped her gaze and quietly moved to Barnaby’s side, playing the part of a frightened girl.

Barnaby watched her, amused by her clever little act. ‘She’s actually pretty cute when she does that, he thought.

“Don’t wander around. Get back to the auction viewing area,” the guard warned before hurrying off to chase after the others.

Once the guard left, Hannah finally relaxed and looked up at Barnaby, a hint of relief in her voice. “Barnaby, what brings you

out here?”

“I’ve been waiting for you forever. You weren’t picking up your phone, so I got worried and came looking,” Barnaby said.

glancing toward where the guards had run off. “And what was going on with you and that guy?”

Hannah started heading in the direction Barnaby had come from. “I just stepped out of the restroom and got a little lost. Heard some noise over here, so I came to check it out. Ran into him and figured I’d ask for directions, that’s all.”

Barnaby fell into step beside her. “Oh? Since when does asking for directions involve all that grabbing and pulling?”

‘Seriously?’ Hannah thought, speechless.

When she still didn’t say anything, Barnaby suddenly stopped and turned to face her, his eyes searching hers. “Baby, is there something you’re not telling me?”
