Chapter 226 Discover Barnaby’s Secret

Chapter 226 Discover Barnaby’s Secret

“Are you even speaking human right now? If you can’t say anything nice, just zip it! No one’s gonna mistake you for a mute,” Candy snapped, whipping around.

Tristan hadn’t come back last night, and there was still no word from him all morning. ‘Why does no one care that I’m worried too?’ she thought, feeling anxious.

Hannah slung an arm around Candy’s shoulders, giving her a reassuring squeeze.

Candy huffed at Christopher, then leaned into Hannah’s shoulder. She needed that comfort right now.

Christopher was left speechless.

“Your guys?” Hannah tilted her head and asked.

“Yeah, the SWAT team leader is a buddy of mine. If I hadn’t called them, the rescue team wouldn’t have shown up so fast!” Christopher bragged, looking pretty pleased with himself.

“Even the ones in the helicopter?” Hannah asked, raising an eyebrow.

“What helicopter?” Christopher blinked, confused.

He hadn’t seen any helicopter at all, just a bunch of SWAT vans pulling up outside.

‘Wait, did someone else get help even faster than me?’ Christopher wondered, a little thrown off.

“Never mind, thanks,” Hannah said.

If that helicopter had nothing to do with the SWAT team, then odds are it was Barnaby who sent it in for the rescue.

‘Just what kind of power does someone need in the Scepter House to pull strings and get their people moving that fast?’ Hannah thought.

Suddenly, Hannah felt like she’d just stumbled onto one of Barnaby’s closely guarded secrets.

“Just a ‘thanks’? That’s it? That’s kinda lame!” Christopher complained, clearly not impressed.

Hannah realized her thanks was a bit weak, so she pulled out her acupuncture kit from her bag, stood up, and climbed over to the back row.

When Christopher saw the acupuncture kit in her hand, he instantly pulled back, eyeing her with suspicion.

“What are you doing?” he asked, sounding nervous.

“Just returning the favor,” Hannah said, opening the kit and taking out a needle.

Christopher’s eyes widened at the sight of that long, gleaming needle, his skin crawled. “No way!” he blurted out.

But once Hannah had the needle out, there was no turning back.

“Joe, hold him down,” Hannah said.

Joe didn’t hesitate, he immediately pinned Christopher in place.

“Don’t touch me! Aaaaaah!” Christopher yelled.

“Come on, man, don’t be such a wimp! Afraid of a little needle?” Joe said, rolling his eyes.

But when the needle went in, it wasn’t painful at all.

Christopher was speechless.

Fifteen minutes later, Christopher realized his stuffy nose and headache from the cold were completely gone.

‘Damn, she really is the Nameless Healer!’ Christopher thought, totally amazed.

‘This is seriously incredible!’ he thought, still in awe.

“Don’t thank me. Just hit up your buddy and get me the scoop on what went down last night,” Hannah said, slipping the needle back into her kit.

Christopher looked at Hannah with pure admiration, nodding like crazy. “No problem!”

But after a moment, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. ‘Wait, wasn’t this supposed to be a thank-you?’ ‘How did I end up being her errand boy again?’ he thought, a little confused.

“Barnaby, the reports are all in,” Magnus said, knocking on the office door before setting a stack of files on Barnaby’s desk. He glanced at Tristan, who was sprawled out and fast asleep on the couch, and instinctively lowered his voice.

“Turns out there were two groups. The brother of that drug lord you took out before hired some guys from overseas to get revenge. But they’ve all been arrested now,” Magnús explained.

“Mm,” Barnaby replied, flipping through the reports.

Magnus continued, “The bullet from the sniper rifle matches exactly the one we extracted from Gemma’s body, same size, same material, same powder load in the casing.

“The woods were wiped clean, so we didn’t find any useful clues. But the way they did it is identical. There’s a 90% chance it’s the same sniper who tried to take out Gemma.”

‘This is the second time this has happened!’ Barnaby thought, his jaw clenching.

‘Wait, was the sniper after Hannah all along, not Gemma?’ Barnaby wondered, suspicion creeping in.

“Keep digging,” Barnaby said coldly.

“Yes, sir,” Magnus replied.

When Hannah landed in Kinswood, she checked her phone and saw a message from Van. She tossed her backpack to Joe, keeping only a small bag for herself.

“Go ahead and head back, I’ve got something to deal with,” she said as she turned away.

With that, she headed for the taxi stand, hopped in a cab, and went straight to Grace Hospital.

Inside the VIP room at Grace Hospital, Iris slowly opened her eyes.

Realizing she was in a hospital, she immediately clutched her belly and sat up abruptly.

“Easy, honey,” her husband Stanley Baker said, hurrying to steady her.

“How did I end up here?” Iris asked, sounding confused.

She remembered strolling in the backyard, then suddenly feeling dizzy, after that, everything went black.

“You fainted,” Stanley said, sounding worried.

“Is the baby alright?” Iris blurted out, her tone anxious.

Stanley looked like he wanted to say something, but just hit the call button for the doctor instead.

‘Something’s wrong… I can feel it, Iris thought, a sense of dread creeping in.

Ever since she stopped taking those pills Daisy gave her, the nausea had gotten way worse. Her weight kept dropping instead of going up.

She went to see the best OB-GYN in the country, but the doctor said the baby’s heartbeat wasn’t developing right and suggested she end the pregnancy.

‘No way! I’m not giving up my baby!’ Iris thought, panic rising in her chest.

Doctors had always said she’d never have kids. Having her own child was her biggest dream. Now that she was finally pregnant, there was no way she’d let go.

The doctor put her on meds to help her hold onto the pregnancy, but Iris still passed out in less than two weeks.

Even the VP of Grace Hospital and the OB-GYN chief showed up to examine her themselves.

“Is my baby okay?” Iris asked anxiously after the exam.

“Ms. Thole, your blood sugar has spiked way too fast, and the baby’s development isn’t normal. If you keep going, the baby’ s heartbeat could stop, and it’ll put your health in serious danger.

“Given your situation, we strongly recommend ending the pregnancy and focusing on your own health,” the OB-GYN chief said.

“No way!” Iris shot back, her voice trembling. “You have to save my baby, no matter what!”

“I’m sorry, but we can’t do that,” the OB-GYN chief said, looking troubled.

CRASH!

Iris hurled her water cup to the floor, smashing it in a burst of fury.

“My baby was perfectly healthy! If it hadn’t been for those toxic pills that Daisy gave me, would things have turned out like this?!” she screamed, her voice trembling with rage.

“Get Darren in here, right now! I don’t care how you do it, just save my baby! Or the Thole family will make you regret it!” she threatened.

“Easy, Baby, don’t get so worked up, you’ll hurt the baby,” Stanley said, rushing to calm her down.

“Ms. Thole, even if Mr. Whitmore himself came, there’s nothing he could do to save the baby. We’re just looking out for your health,” the VP said, sounding helpless.

Ever since Daisy’s scandal, things between the Thole and Reese families had been super tense. Rumor had it, even their joint medical equipment project had been put on ice.

If Iris lost this baby, the relationship between the two families would probably go from bad to worse.

“I don’t want to hear it! Get Darren in here, now! Get out!” Iris snapped, her voice shaking with rage.

The VP and the OB-GYN chief hurried out of the room.

“Baby, don’t get so worked up. Let’s go see the Nameless Healer, maybe she can help,” Stanley said, trying to comfort her.

At the mention of the Nameless Healer, Iris’s expression turned somber. She didn’t say anything, just rested her hand on her belly and gave a quiet nod.

Right then, the hospital room door swung open and a girl stepped inside. “Looking for me?” she said, her voice ringing out with confidence.
