Chapter 240 Hannah’s Badhass Pass

Chapter 240 Hannah’s Badhass Pass

Meanwhile, Barnaby arrived at the vet clinic using the address Chloe had sent him.

As soon as he walked in, he was hit with the sound of a pig squealing like it was being slaughtered. Chloe, the vet, and a nurse were all huddled around the table, doing everything they could to get Hedy out from under it.

Hedy was going absolutely berserk, screaming its head off, and there was no way it was coming out. The vet even got his hand bitten when he tried to grab it.

“Barnaby!” Chloe called out, her face lighting up like she’d just spotted her knight in shining armor. She rushed over to him.

Barnaby shot her a cool, indifferent glance.

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat under his gaze. Not seeing Hannah anywhere behind him, her excitement turned into a little secret glee.

Still, she put on a worried face and said anxiously, “Hedy’s hiding under the table and won’t come out for the checkup. The vet and I both got kicked and bitten.”

As she spoke, she raised her hand to show him the red mark Hedy had left.

Barnaby didn’t bother looking at her. He just walked right past and went straight to the table where Hedy was hiding.

Under the table, Hedy seemed to catch a whiff of Barnaby’s familiar scent, and those miserable squeals finally died down.

The vet, a guy in his thirties who’d been doing this for over ten years, had never seen a pet this stubborn before. With a respectful tone, he said to Barnaby, “Could you please try to coax it out gently for the checkup?”

Barnaby nodded, and the vet and nurse immediately stepped aside..

The vet took one look at Barnaby and thought, ‘With that kind of vibe, and keeping a pig as a pet, he must be one of those tough-looking guys who’s actually a total softie inside, a super patient, gentle pet parent! After all, pigs weren’t like cats or dogs. They didn’t get attached to their owners easily. Pigs had a temper, hated being picked up, and would scream, bite, or even kick if one tried.

The vet figured he should watch how Barnaby coaxed Hedy out, so he wouldn’t have to deal with this kind of awkward mess again.

Chloe was gazing at Barnaby with stars in her eyes, and she was just as eager to see how he managed to calm Hedy down.

But instead, Barnaby just stood there in front of the table, barely parting his lips as he uttered just six words: ” Hedy, come out.”

His voice was cold as ice, like he was giving a command. He didn’t even bother to crouch or coax Hedy at all. The vet couldn’t help but speak up. “Sir, you’ll just scare it more that way. Pets are like kids, you know. You need to be gentle with them…”

But before the vet could finish, the pig they’d spent an hour trying to coax out just trotted out obediently, grunting softly, the moment Barnaby spoke.

Hedy nuzzled up against Barnaby’s feet, looking up at him with wet, pleading eyes, like it was asking, “Where’s my owner?”

Seeing Hedy looking so pitiful, Barnaby couldn’t help but soften a little inside.

“Let’s get you checked out, and I’ll take you to see her in a bit,” he said, bending down to scoop Hedy up with one arm, his voice much gentler now.

Hedy seemed to understand, grunting twice in response, and let Barnaby scoop it up and carry it over to the exam table, totally chill.

The vet and nurse were left speechless, staring in disbelief. Was this really the same breed of pet pig they’d been dealing with all this time?

It was known that the pet pig was a total menace and hated being held.

“Why are you just standing there gawking?” Barnaby shot the vet a look.

The vet snapped out of it and rushed over to examine Hedy.

“Barnaby, thank goodness you showed up when you did. I honestly had no idea what to do. I was so worried Hedy was going to have a total freak-out.

“I looked it up online, and it said that if pigs get too stressed, it can lead to heart problems and even sudden death,” Chloe said, her voice full of anxiety.

Chloe moved closer to Barnaby, noticing he hadn’t objected to her calling him Barnaby, so she just went with it like it was the most natural thing in the world.

Barnaby didn’t say a word, his eyes glued to Hedy the whole time.

Seeing that, Chloe started blaming herself. “It’s all my fault. I didn’t take good enough care of it. Hannah’s going to be so heartbroken when she sees Hedy like this,” she said.

Barnaby was only tolerating Chloe being this close out of respect for Hannah.

If any other woman got even a meter near him, he’d have told her to scram.

But her phony sweetness was just too much for Barnaby. He said coldly, “Just go home if you’ve got nothing else to do.”

Chloe looked nervously at his perfect profile, her thoughts swirling: ‘He looks like he stepped out of a magazine, so why does he have to be so cold?’

With Hannah not here for once, Chloe finally had a chance to be alone with Barnaby. She didn’t want to leave and lose this rare moment, so she stayed put.

“It’s my fault Hedy got sick, I messed up taking care of her. Please, can I stay and keep her company while she gets treated? I’ll be a nervous wreck if I go home now,” Chloe pleaded, her voice tinged with guilt and worry.

Barnaby just ignored her, and right then, the vet finally had the test results.

Hedy had diarrhea and was all stressed out, so it needed an IV drip.

Hedy wasn’t having any of that cage business for the IV, so Barnaby just picked it up, sat down, and kept petting its neck to help it chill out, then let the vet set up the drip.

Once the drip was going, Barnaby whipped out his phone, shot a quick video of Hedy looking all sad and pathetic on his lap with the IV, and sent it to Hannah on WhatsApp, hoping she’d shower him with praise.

But Hannah was busy and didn’t reply.

Chloe stood off to the side, watching Barnaby treat Hedy with more gentleness than he’d ever shown her. A little pang of jealousy crept up inside her.

“Hedy, are you feeling any better now?” Chloe crouched down, her voice soft and full of concern as she spoke to Hedy, who was lying limp and listless on Barnaby’s lap.

Hedy gave her a lazy look, then turned its head away and shifted to a new position, pointedly ignoring her. Chloe felt a bit awkward and tried to change the subject. “I never thought Hannah would actually keep a pig as a pet. She used to hate pigs, you know.”

When Hannah’s name came up, Barnaby glanced at her. “What do you mean?”

Her heart did a little happy dance when he actually responded to her.

“One time up in the mountains, we were out picking herbs and Hannah got charged by a wild boar.

“She was so freaked out she started crying, and ever since then, she’s hated pigs. She and my brother would spend ages scheming ways to hunt it down and get payback,” Chloe said.

As she spoke, Chloe stood up and sat down beside Barnaby, acting all casual like it was nothing.

Barnaby didn’t pay much attention to her little moves. He was picturing Hannah getting scared and crying, and honestly, he thought she must’ve looked absolutely adorable, so cute it made him want to protect her.

But then it hit him that he hadn’t been there for her back then. It was Joe, that goofy guy, who was with her instead. And honestly, that just made him feel a little jealous.

“And then?” Barnaby pressed.

Even though they’d been together for a while, Hannah almost never opened up about her past. Barnaby was genuinely curious, he wanted to know more about her story.

Seeing that Barnaby wasn’t shutting her down, Chloe felt a little rush of excitement and kept talking.

“So get this, she actually came up with a whole scheme. She set up a trap in the mountains, baited it with food, and then she and Joe managed to chase the wild boar right into it.

“And it totally worked! The boar fell for it, and Hannah didn’t even hesitate, she went in and finished it off herself. Revenge, served cold.

“Then she and Joe dragged the whole pig back to the village and split it up with everyone. It was right around Mid-Autumn Festival, so everyone got an extra feast.

“Hannah’s honestly a legend. I could never do that, I’d probably run for my life if I saw a wild boar. But she just went for it and took it down herself.

“And later, when things got rough at home and we couldn’t afford meat, Hannah and Joe would head up the mountain and hunt wild boar to make sure we had something good to eat,” she said.
