Chapter 241 Hannah’s True Childhood Friend
Chapter 241 Hannah’s True Childhood Friend
Barnaby couldn’t help but feel sorry for Hannah. He had no ideal things had been so hard for her.
She couldn’t even afford a decent meal, and had to risk her life climbing mountains to hunt wild boar just to get by.
No wonder she was so thin. Her waist was so slim, he could probably wrap a hand around it.
And even in such tough conditions, she managed to become a genius student and a miracle healer. She must’ve gone through hell.
Barnaby swore to himself that from now on, he’d treat Hannah like a treasure and never let her suffer again.
After Chloe finished, she saw Barnaby’s brows knit together and figured he must be feeling a bit uneasy.
Honestly, with Hannah’s otherworldly looks and that aloof, untouchable aura, it’s hard to picture her growing up in the mountains and doing all those wild, tough things.
Chloe said, “Hannah wasn’t just brave, she was the village belle. Tons of guys liked her and kept asking me to deliver their love letters to her.
“But Hannah never even glanced at them. She’d just toss them to my brother and let him handle it.
“My brother would burn those letters to cook our meals, saved us a ton of effort chopping firewood.”
Chloe kept talking, getting more and more excited as she went.
She continued, “When those guys who secretly liked Hannah found out, they all teamed up to mess with my brother. But Hannah stepped in and had his back, making those guys finally give up.
“It turned into a whole thing in the village. Everyone joked that Hannah always took my brother’s side and must’ve been into him, they even said she was destined to marry him someday and told me to start calling her sis-in-law already, haha!”
Chloe burst out laughing, deliberately glancing over at Barnaby.
Barnaby kept a straight face as Chloe kept linking Hannah with her brother, every mention feeling like a deliberate reminder,
a reminder of how they grew up together, in a completely innocent and inseparable bond.
‘If it hadn’t been for what happened back then, I would’ve been the one by her side as she grew up.
‘I was the one who watched her grow from a baby to a little girl, the one who held her when she slept, and the one she promised to marry when she was older.
‘I’m the one who’s truly been Hannah’s childhood friend.
‘Joe Jones? That rough-around-the-edges driver, Chloe’s brother, and a broke loser, he actually thinks he’s got a shot at -marrying Hannah?
‘In his dreams!’ Barnaby thought to himself.
Suddenly, Chloe felt the air around her turn icy cold.
The guy next to her was giving off such an intimidating vibe that even Hedy sensed something was up. It looked like it wanted to make a run for it, but Barnaby’s big hand kept it firmly in place.
Chloe quickly explained, “Barnaby, don’t take it the wrong way. Iust meant they were all joking…”
Barnaby realized he’d accidentally scared Hedy and dialed it back a notch.
Chloe thought her explanation had worked and secretly breathe a sigh of relief.
“Are you free most nights?” Barnaby suddenly asked.
Chloe’s cheeks flushed at his question.
She thought, ‘Is there a hidden meaning when a guy asks a girl that?
‘Is he trying to ask me out?’
Chloe was startled by the thought that popped into her head. She thought, ‘Barnaby is Hannah’s boyfriend, he wouldn’t cross that line.’
But deep down, part of her kind of wished he would.
She said, “After I get off work at the clinic, I usually just spend time with Evelyn, watch some TV, read together, or take a walk around the neighborhood. Then it’s a shower and off to be. Nothing much, really.”
After she finished, Chloe stole a glance at Barnaby, hoping he’day something more.
But Barnaby just said, “Since you’re not busy, do me a favor, write down everything you know about Hannah’s past and send
it over.”
Chloe blinked in surprise. “Wait, what?”

She thought, Wasn’t he trying to ask me out or something?!’
“Can’t handle it?” Barnaby raised an eyebrow at her.
Chloe immediately shook her head, trying to look eager. “No way! I can totally do it. I’ll write everything up tonight.”
“Mm.” Barnaby just grunted in response. Noticing the IV bag was empty, he called the vet over to remove the needle.
After the vet finished up and prescribed some meds, Barnaby pulled out his phone and paid with a quick scan.
Chloe jumped at the chance, coming over with her phone. “Can add you on WhatsApp? I’ll send it to you when I’m done.”
Chloe had been wanting to add Barnaby on WhatsApp for ages, but she never dared ask him directly, and she never had a good excuse to ask Hannah for it either.
Now, she finally had the perfect excuse to add him.
“Send it to Hannah and have her forward it to me,” Barnaby said, then left with Hedy in his arms.
Chloe was speechless.
She thought, ‘Great, now I can’t even make things up!’
She rushed after Barnaby, hoping she could hitch a ride home with him.
But when she got outside, she watched Barnaby put Hedy in the back seat, hop in the driver’s seat, and take off, didn’t even bother to offer her a ride.
Chloe just gaped.

Meanwhile, at Thole Manor.
Iris’s prenatal meds had been swapped out, and she almost lost the baby. Mabel was livid, she shut everyone in and started a full-on investigation, hunting for the culprit herself.
With Stanley and Dr. Madison vouching for her, Hannah was instantly cleared of suspicion. Plus, since she managed to save Iris’s baby, she instantly became the family’s lifesaver. Mabel even had to swallow her pride and apologize for how she’ d treated Hannah before.
Mabel glanced at Hannah, almost called her by her old name out of habit, but quickly corrected herself to “Ms. Carter.” After all, Hannah wasn’t from that side of the family.
She said, “I was just so worried about Iris earlier that I might’ve been a bit harsh. Please forgive me. Dinner’s ready, please, come to the dining room with me. Edmund is there too, and he’d like to thank you himself for saving our grandchild.”
‘She spoke politely, her previous coldness nowhere to be seen.
“Sure!” Hannah replied without hesitation.
She thought, ‘I finally made it back, no way I’m missing the chance to see their true colors.’
Evelyn’s expression showed a flash of resistance.
She said, “Hannah needs to get back to the clinic to treat her patients. If you need anything, I’ll go with you instead.” After saying that to Mabel, Evelyn pulled Hannah aside and whispered to her, “You stay out of this. I’ll go instead.” The Thole family was a place that chews people up and spits them out. If Hannah hadn’t begged her to come help, Evelyn would never have set foot in this place she despised.
Her beloved daughter had married into this family, and ended up dead because she was set up.
Now that Edmund was personally hosting them, Evelyn was sure he wanted to call her out for faking Hannah’s death and helping her run away back then.
Hannah wasn’t her real granddaughter anymore, and Evelyn didnt want her getting dragged into the Thole family’s drama because of what happened to her own daughter, especially since she’s still seeing Barnaby
“Relax, they can’t do anything to us now. If you really don’t want me getting mixed up with them again, at least let me come clean and tell them who I am, face to face,” Hannah said.
Hannah could tell exactly what Evelyn was worried about, so she gave her a gentle, reassuring pat on the back, trying to soothe her. ‘Don’t worry, Grandma, I’ve got this, she thought.
Mabel had been worried Hannah wouldn’t show up, but then Hannah said, “Lead the way.”
The three of them headed toward the banquet hall.
The banquet hall at Thole Manor was reserved for hosting important guests. Edmund was already there, and with him was Howard
