Chapter 288 Water’s Been Spiked
Chapter 288 Water’s Been Spiked
“Did you hear that? She told you to let go! Quit sticking to her like you’re a piece of gum stuck to her shoe!” Spencer snapped.
When Spencer saw Hannah tell Barnaby to let go first instead of him, he grinned to himself. Now he was sure those two were done for.
And judging by the way things looked, Hannah was the one who dumped Barnaby. That just made Spencer even more interested in her. He was itching to win her over and join forces to mess with Barnaby.
“You let go too!” Hannah said firmly, turning to Spencer.
Spencer was lost for words.
“Why aren’t you letting go? Got cheated on, so now you want to make me the next fool? Spencer, who do you think you are?” Barnaby said coldly.
Spencer shot back, “I dyed my hair the way Hannah likes it. Would you ever do that for her?”
Barnaby let out a cold laugh. “Hannah likes white hair!”
Barnaby felt a slight itch on his hand but didn’t think much of it. He forcefully pried Spencer’s hand off Hannah, then pulled her close, holding her like he was trying to keep Spencer as far away as possible, as if Spencer was contagious. Spencer’s palm was itching like crazy. Seeing Barnaby cling to Hannah so tightly, he suddenly lost interest in fighting for her and just watched them like he was enjoying a show.
Once the two finally let go, David shot a look at his wife, and they hurried off to greet the guests. Meanwhile, Fiona stood off to the side, her eyes burning with jealousy as she watched Barnaby hold Hannah like she was the most precious thing in the world.
Fiona had been crushing on Barnaby ever since she found out he was Spencer’s arch-nemesis. She was totally hooked on this guy who was so ridiculously good-looking it was almost unfair.
She was convinced she and Barnaby were kindred spirits, since they both had Spencer as their enemy.
“I’ve got something smeared on me, can you let go of me first?” Hannah said, struggling to break free from Barnaby’s grip. But he was even stronger than Spencer. There was no way she could shake him off.
Barnaby ignored her first comment, but the last part clearly annoyed him. He glared at her, face cold as ice. “Not happening!”
There was a touch of defiance in his voice.
Hannah let out a helpless sigh. “Seriously, aren’t you itching at all?”
As soon as she said it, Barnaby realized it wasn’t just his palm, His whole arm, his chest, even his entire body was itching like crazy. He glanced at the back of his hand and saw little red spots breaking out, looking like he was coming down with hives.
Hannah put a hand to her forehead, feeling a bit defeated. She’d meant to set Spencer up, but somehow, it had totally backfired on Barnaby instead.
“Don’t scratch,” Hannah said, catching Barnaby’s hand just as he was about to go for it. But then she remembered her own palm was covered in itching powder, so she pulled her hand back right away.
Spotting a resting room attached to the banquet hall, she suggested, “Let’s head to the break room first.”
But Barnaby stayed put, his eyes locked onto hers, dark and intense. “I think I’m having an allergic reaction. I’m really not feeling well, can’t walk. Can you help me out?”
Hannah was lost for words.
She pulled up his sleeve and took a closer look at the red spots on his arm. Turns out it really was an allergic reaction.
“Are you allergic to soapberries?” Hannah asked,
She’d only used soapberries, taro powder, and rootless water. Barnaby had eaten taro before, and she’d used rootless water in her medicine plenty of times, but he’d never had soapberries before.
“Yeah,” Barnaby replied.
If his allergy got any worse, he could go into shock. Hannah did’t dare waste another second. She helped him into the break room, sat him down on the couch.
Successfully unlocked!
Hannah said, “Just sit tight and try not to scrat berat
and be right back.”
With that, she hurried out to find Spencer. She’d left the new nextles she bought in his car earlier.
Barnaby slumped back on the couch, head tilted up, his neck blotched with angry red hives from the allergic reaction. He fought the urge to scratch as the itch crawled all over him, swe beading on his forehead. Even breathing felt like a

struggle
After what felt like forever, the door clicked open.
Barnaby, thinking Hannah had finally come back, rasped out in a weak voice, “Babe, I feel miserable.”
Fiona’s heart skipped a beat when she heard his voice, so gentle, with a hint of that spoiled tone, nothing like his usual cold
and distant self.
‘So Barnaby really does have a gentle side,’ Fiona thought, feeling her pulse quicken all over again.
“Barnaby…” Chloe murmured, carefully approaching with a glass of water, her every step full of caution.
But when Barnaby realized it wasn’t Hannah, he shot Fiona a look of pure disdain and snapped, “Get lost!”
Fiona flinched at his sudden mood swing, but didn’t back down. “Barnaby, you look really uncomfortable. I brought you some warm water. Here, have some. It might help.”
Saying that, she scooted closer on the couch, leaning in so she could try to help him drink.
“Get lost! Don’t make me say it a third time,” Barnaby snapped, pulling out a gun and pointing it right at her head, his stare cold as ice.
Fiona stared at the dark barrel, her heart thumping so loud she thought it might burst. She froze, too scared to move.
She knew if she tried to get any closer, he’d really shoot.
This guy was more terrifying than a cold-blooded animal. If she known he carried a gun around, she never would’ve risked coming in here.
“Barnaby, I’m really sorry. I just saw how miserable you looked and wanted to help out, that’s all. Please don’t take it the wrong way. If you’d rather I leave, I’ll go right now,” Fiona said, her voice shaky and careful.
Fiona’s face was all pleading and fear as she edged away, every muscle tight with nerves. She was terrified that if she made one wrong move, he’d actually pull the trigger.
“Wait.”
As Fiona was about to step out the door, his voice, rough and low, sounded from behind. She froze, then whipped around. When she saw him lower the gun, her fear instantly flipped to excitement.
‘Did he just go soft?’ Fiona thought, her heart skipping a beat as hope flared up inside her.
“You put something in the water?” Barnaby shot a sharp look at the glass in her hand.
Fiona’s face drained of color, her pupils shrinking in shock. ‘How the hell did he figure it out?!’ she panicked.
She’d used a colorless, tasteless love drug, supposed to be super effective!
She’d snuck in on purpose while Hannah was out, hoping Barnaby would drink the drugged water and then they’d get intimate right here. When Hannah came back and the drama exploded, everyone would know she and Barnaby had something going on.
With all those eyes on them, Barnaby would be forced to make it official and marry her, just like she’d planned all along.
Her mom had played the same card to marry her dad, so Fiona was sure it would work for her too.
But when she saw that cold, black gun in Barnaby’s hand, she was scared out of her wits.
She didn’t know about anyone else, but she knew Barnaby was the kind of guy who could kill without a second thought. Word was, a bunch of maids at Thole Manor had ended up crippled or dead because of him, suffering till their last breath.
If he figured out what she’d done and what was in that glass, she’d never walk out of this room again.
“N-no…” Fiona stammered, panic written all over her face.
“What did you spike it with?” Barnaby demanded, his voice cold and sharp.
Before she could get another word out, Barnaby cut her off. He could read it all from her guilty face. There was definitely something off about that water.
Fiona bit down hard on her lip, too scared to say a word. She shot Barnaby a timid, pleading look. He had a face that could make angels jealous, but right now, he was acting like a devil, searing her half to death.
Barnaby, clearly losing patience, raised the gun and said in a low dangerous voice, “Spit it out!”
Fiona’s whole body trembled as she stammered, “A-a-aphrodisia
Whenever a woman slips something into a guy’s drink, you know it’s all about sex.
Barnaby’s gaze grew even icier. He nodded at the glass with his un. “Pour out half and drink it Now”
