Chapter 292 Partners In Crime

Chloe stared at the message, her heart skipped a beat. She quickly glanced around, and when she saw no one was watching, she breathed a tiny sigh of relief. But her heart was sl pounding, and her hand shook uncontrollably as she held her phone.

“You can’t betray Hannah and Evelyn!”

“Whatever I give you, I can just as easily take back!”

Joe’s words of warning and Hannah’s advice kept echoing in her mind, like two little devils on her shoulders, bickering endlessly with no clear winner.

She tried to recall all the kindness Hannah had shown her, but in the end, Barnaby’s outrageously handsome face kept haunting her thoughts.

Just then, she heard a noise out in the yard. Curious, Chloe stepped out a little and caught sight of Barnaby holding Hannah’s hand, the two of them laughing and chatting as they strolled out of the east wing, making their way back to the west wing.

Her eyes went green with envy. Barnaby only ever wore that special, dazzling smile when he was with Hannah.

She wanted that smile for herself.

“Chloe, what are you doing hiding behind the door? You scared me!” Just then, Carolyn walked back in and jumped when she saw Chloe.

Chloe snapped out of it, quickly put her phone away, and blurted out, “I-I was just about to go to the bathroom.”

Carolyn looked a little confused and glanced around the room. “s the bathroom in here broken or something?”

“Uh, yeah, I think so,” Chloe replied, trying to sound casual. Then she noticed the prescription slip in Carolyn’s hand. “Is that a new prescription?”

As soon as the prescription came up, Carolyn’s attention shifted “No, did you fill the prescription for Patient 4, Willow Brooks, yet?”

“Not yet. What’s up?” Chloe asked.

Carolyn hurried on, “Perfect timing! The patient’s allergic to seahorse, so Evelyn switched it out for eucommia bark. This is the updated prescription, just make sure you get it right. The patient’s coming in for their meds tomorrow afternoon.”

Chloe took the prescription. “Got it, leave it to me.”

After Carolyn left, Chloe set the prescription down on the table, pulled out her phone again, took a deep breath, and finally made up her mind to text Darren back.

Chloe: [When do we start?]

After sending the message, she didn’t get an immediate reply. So, she picked up the prescription from the table and got back to preparing the herbs.

Five minutes later, her phone buzzed with a WhatsApp notification. She dropped the herbs and grabbed her phone. Darren: [Tomorrow at 2 PM. Clear your schedule. I’ll come pick you up. We’ll talk in person.]

Her heart was pounding as she replied: [Okay, Darren.]

She added a cute sticker at the end.

She waited for a while, but when Darren didn’t reply, she put her phone away, picked up the prescription, and got back to sorting the herbs, totally oblivious that the last one she grabbed for Patient 4 was actually the outdated prescription.

By lunchtime the next day, Chloe finished eating and went to find Evelyn, who was just about to take her afternoon nap, to ask for some time off.

“Evelyn, I need to step out for a bit this afternoon. I’ve already asked Elaine to take care of the patients’ meds,” Chloe said. There were two nurses working at the clinic. After helping the patients, Carolyn would study acupuncture with Evelyn, while Elaine learned how to make herbal remedies from Chloe.

Both girls picked things up fast, so Evelyn felt at ease letting Elane handle things. Still, she found it odd that Chloe had been taking time off more often than usual lately.

“Is something up?” Evelyn couldn’t help but as Successfully unlocked!

“Yeah, a friend of mine isn’t feeling well and can really go out, yummy over to check on him,” Chloe nodded, making up an excuse.

“Chloe, are you seeing someone?” Evelyn asked, noticing that Cloe always had the same excuse for taking time off, either a friend needed help or she had plans with someone.

Chloe’s eyes darted away, and to cover it up, she put on a playful pout. “Evelyn, you’re always teasing me! No, it’s just a regular friend, that’s all.”

Evelyn chuckled, her eyes twinkling. “Alright, go ahead. If you ever meet someone special, bring him by so we can all get to know him.”

Chloe felt a little guilty. “Okay.”

After leaving the clinic, she went home, changed into a pale yellow dress, and even put on a little makeup. Then she slipped out through the back gate of her apartment complex, walked about 500 meters, and spotted a black BMW waiting by the

curb.

Chloe glanced around, making sure no one she knew was nearby, then walked over and got into the back seat.

Darren was already there, dressed in a sharp black suit, his long legs casually crossed as he leaned back, scrolling through

his tablet.

When he saw Chloe get in, he just glanced up at her and told the driver, “Let’s go.”

“Darren, where are we headed?” Chloe asked.

“Grace Hospital. We’re going to get your blood drawn for a paternity test,” Darren said, reaching into the seat pocket and handing her a contract. “Take a look, if everything’s fine, just sign it.”

Chloe swallowed hard. “Okay, let me take a look first.”

Half an hour later, the car pulled into the parking lot of Grace Hospital, where a nurse was already waiting.

Chloe handed the signed contract to Darren, and the nurse got her out of the car, then took her through the staff entrance to get her blood drawn.

Once the blood was drawn, the nurse walked her over to the director’s office before heading off.

Inside the office, everyone from the Reese family was present except for Mr. Reese and Daisy, who was still locked up. Each person wore a different expression, and the atmosphere was tense.

When Chloe walked in, Mrs. Reese, her eyes red from crying, turned to her husband, Alistair Reese.

“Do we really have to go through with this? Daisy’s already in prison. Thanks to our family name, at least the people there won’t make things too hard for her.

“But if we announce to the world that she’s not really one of us, she won’t even have that little bit of comfort left,” Mrs.

Reese said.

Alistair kept his face grim and stayed silent, but Mrs. Reese cut in sharply.

“If she hadn’t been so obsessed with status and vanity, would the Reese family be in this mess because of her?”

Even after they cut Daisy off and let her face the consequences in prison, it was still a stain on the Reese family.

Because of that, the stock of Reese Medical had been in the dumps, and their competitors were using it as ammo to drag the family’s reputation through the mud in the press.

Alistair had racked his brain trying to fix things, throwing all sorts of PR moves at the problem, but nothing seemed to work.

And with Ms. Carter’s clinic in Kinswood, which could cure almost anything and made them look even worse by comparison, the Reese family’s century-old reputation had hit rock bottom for the first time ever.

In the end, it was Mrs. Reese who came up with this crazy scheme, inspired by the whole real-vs-fake heiress drama with the Thole family that had been all over the news lately.

They were about to go public with the news: Daisy was just the adopted daughter, and Chloe was actually the real Reese family heiress.

“Since we’ve already let her go, we might as well see it through to the end. This is her final act of loyalty to the Reese family Alistair said slowly.

n

Mrs. Reese just couldn’t accept it and shook her head. “No, isn’t there any other way?”

“This is the best solution. It’ll restore the Reese family’s reputation and give Daisy a final chance to make amends,” Alistair tried to comfort her.

Chloe’s skills in medicinal cuisine were top-notch in Kinswood, and she was basically Hannah’s right-hand at the clinic. Hannah’s clinic relied on a combo of acupuncture and medicinal cuisine, both were indispensable. If Chloe switched over to the Reese family, it would deal a heavy blow to Ms Carter’s clinic.

Plus, Chloe had already asked them to set her up with Barnaby. The Reese family wasn’t about to give up on their marriage alliance with the Thole family, and Mrs. Reese had already reached out to Eleanor
