“No need to thank me,” Hannah said as she disinfected the needles and packed them away. “So, what happened between you and Chloe last night?”

Joe blinked in surprise. ‘How did Hannah even know I ran into Chloe last night?’ he thought to himself.

But then it hit him. ‘With the way Hannah and Barnaby operate, they probably already dug up everything that happened by

now.’

Thinking back to how Chloe shoved him so hard last night, Joe Just knew deep down she hadn’t meant to hurt him. They’d lost their parents when they were just kids, and Joe had raised Chloe all on his own. He knew her better than anyone. She couldn’t even kill a chicken, so hurting someone was out of the question. She’d just been way too upset. Hannah was always swamped, and Joe didn’t want to bother her with their family mess any more than necessary. She’d already done more than enough for them. He realized he’d been gnoring Chloe’s feelings, and this was something he had to sort out himself.

Joe explained, “I just tripped and fell on my own. She probably doesn’t even know about it.”

‘If she knew, she would’ve come to check on me,’ Joe thought.

Hannah shot him a skeptical look. “Are you sure?”

Worried Hannah might go after Chloe, Joe quickly said, “It really wasn’t Chloe’s fault. I just never thought she’d end up with Percival Nox. I’m sorry. I didn’t do a good job raising her. Once I’m discharged, I’ll go find her and bring her back so she can apologize to you.”

As he spoke, he started to throw off the covers, ready to get out of bed.

Hannah stopped him. “No need. She’s got better opportunities now, I won’t hold her back. As long as she doesn’t hurt you two, that’s all I care about.”

She’d given Chloe a choice before, and now she finally had her answer.

As for what Chloe’s up to with the Reese family, Hannah would just wait and see.
