Chapter 321 A Pawn No More

Chapter 321 A Pawn No More

If the Reese family had more folks like him, they wouldn’t be such a sorry state right now.”

In the CEO’s office of Reese Pharmaceuticals, Alistair sat on the couch with a grim face while Darren turned on the TV. The news was airing a live broadcast of Hannah Carter speaking outside Concord Hospital.

Their moods, already bad, got even worse after hearing what Hanah said.

They had just come from a shareholders’ meeting, where the big investors tore into Chloe for messing up the pricing in the herbal medicine market and leaving the company stuck with unsold stock. They told Alistair to get his family under control. Alistair was clearly in the wrong-even as the head of the Reese family, he had to swallow his pride and own up to it, swearing he’d keep a closer eye from now on and not let family drama tank the company’s stock again.

Darren, on the other hand, let a golden chance to rescue the Reese Medical’s stock slip right through his fingers by refusing to give the Nameless Healer an operating room, handing the win straight to Concord Hospital. He got singled out by the board for it and was told not to make decisions on his own next time.

Some shareholders even took the opportunity to suggest Percival take up a position in name at Grace Hospital and do whatever it takes to team up with the Nameless Healer, just to keep the Reese Medical’s stock afloat.

Darren was convinced Percival had leaked everything to the shareholders on purpose, and he couldn’t let it go-especially after seeing Hannah on TV, making a big show of praising Percival in front of the media.

“Percival? He always seemed so weak, but turns out he’s got a lot of tricks up his sleeve! And now he’s teaming up with Hannah for a publicity stunt?” Darren snapped, glaring at Percival’s photo on the news, his jaw clenched tight.

Percival, who grew up in a branch family, had always been so invisible to the main Reese family that even the shareholders barely noticed he existed. But now, of all times, when the Reese Medical’s stock was at rock bottom, he suddenly decided to make a big splash.

‘He’s got to be scheming something, Darren thought, his eyes narrowing. ‘He’s trying to get the shareholders and Grandpa to notice him, so he can worm his way back into the Reese family and fight me for the inheritance!’

“Why didn’t you tell me about the operating room?” Alistair demanded, lighting a cigarette and banging the lighter against the table, his voice heavy with frustration.

If one of the shareholders hadn’t suddenly mentioned it at the meeting, he’d still be in the dark.

Darren felt his annoyance spike at the way his father was blaming him.

“You really messed this up!” Alistair snapped.

“She’s the one who dragged the Reese family into this mess-how am I supposed to just hand over an operating room to her? And it was Percival sticking his nose in, trying to get the room from Grace Hospital, not even Hannah herself. She couldn’t be bothered to show her face! Is that how you ask someone for help? Why should I lend it to her?” Darren shot back, stubborn as ever.

“But did you ever stop to think that if they do the surgery on our turf, we’re the ones who get to decide how it ends?” Alistair barked.

Darren wanted to fire back, but the words died on Alistair’s lips because his dad was right.

Suddenly, it hit Darren-Hannah’s last words to the camera were basically calling him a fool. While he was feeling smug, thinking he could block Hannah from every operating room and piece of equipment in Kinswood, she and Percival were probably snickering behind his back, thinking he’d played himself.

Just picturing that scene made Darren’s fists clench, veins popping. ‘Percival? That lapdog from the branch family, always tagging along with the main Reese clan? Who does he think hes, laughing at me?’ Darren seethed.

“Next time, pay attention! Don’t pull something this stupid again Alistair snapped.

“Yes, sir,” Darren replied, head bowed. Then, as if something just occurred to him, he looked up and asked, “So, are we really going to let Percival back into Grace Hospital?”

“Just listen to those old foxes, but don’t take it to heart,” Alistair said, stubbing out his cigarette in the ashtray. “All they care about is getting the Reese Medical’s stock back up. As long as we reach that goal, we decide how it’s done.

“Chloe’s just a spent pawn now. Wait for the right moment and take care of her-then move on to Percival. As for Hannah, we’ll need to think carefully about how to get rich”

“Yes, sir,” Darren replied.

Meanwhile, on the other side.

Hannah climbed into Vera Thole’s car, catching a faint whiff of sandalwood lingering in the air.

“My child, it’s really been ages! You’ve grown up so much,” Vera said, her tone gentle as she affectionately took Hannah’s

hand.

Hannah, not used to this kind of enthusiasm, subtly pulled her Hand back and managed a polite smile. “Lady, hope you’ve

been well.

“Oh, don’t be so distant, dear. Just call me Aunt again,” Vera replied with a smile.

That was just what the servants in the Thole family called her-ady’.

“No need to act close. Just tell me what you want,” Hannah said her voice cool and distant.

She kept things cold and businesslike, getting straight to the point.

Seeing Hannah’s frosty attitude, Vera dropped the pleasantries and got straight to business. “Do you remember Allen? You two used to hang out all the time when you were kids.”

“Yeah,” Hannah said, her gaze lowered, looking all demure and innocent-though her thick, long lashes were really just masking the mischief in her eyes.

“He’s been sick. Over ten years ago, he had a high fever that messed up his brain, and now he’s basically got the mind of a four- or five-year-old. Can you take a look at him, see if there’s any way to help?” Vera asked.

Hannah didn’t rush to say yes. Instead, she coolly reminded Vera, “At my clinic, patients have to register first. Unless the patient really can’t come in, I don’t do home visits.”

Vera was caught off guard for a second, and all those doubts she’d had about Hannah’s real reason for coming back to Kinswood just melted away.

“Alright, could you bend the rules a little? Just check Allen out and see if there’s anything you can do. I’ll have someone book the appointment. If you think he’s treatable, I’ll bring him to your clinic myself,” Vera said.

Hannah pretended to hesitate, then finally ‘reluctantly’ agreed. “Fine, I’ve got some time right now. Let’s go take a look.”

Vera’s face lit up. “Thank you so much!” She pressed her hands together in front of her chest, closed her eyes, and murmured sincerely, “Thank Buddha for watching over us.”

Then she opened her eyes and turned to the driver. “Ben, take us straight home.”

An hour later, the Rolls-Royce glided to a stop outside Allen’s courtyard.

Both the front and inner gates stood wide open. Vera stepped out and led Hannah into the main hall. “Allen, look who I brought to see you!”

But Allen was nowhere to be found in the living room or his bedroom. Vera called over a servant and asked, “Where’s Allen?”

“Lady, Martha took Allen out to play in the back garden,” the servant replied respectfully.

“Call Martha and tell her to bring Allen back,” Vera instructed.

Hannah cut her off. “No need. Let’s just go over there ourselves

She remembered that the path to the back garden led right past Graceland-the very spot where Alastair had died all those years ago. She figured she might as well take a look while she was there.

Vera didn’t think much of it and just nodded. “Alright, that works too.”

As they walked, Hannah glanced toward where Graceland was in her memory-only to see a three-story Buddhist pagoda standing there now.

“Did they rebuild Graceland?” Hannah asked.

Vera paused, her fingers stilling on her prayer beads. She followed Hannah’s gaze to the pagoda, pressed her hands together in front of her chest, bowed respectfully toward it, and then spoke slowly.

“Yes, about eleven years ago, Graceland burned down in a fire. I happened late at night, and no one noticed until it was too late-the flames were too fierce, and everything was lost. The pagoda was built afterward, hoping it would bless the Thole family with peace and safety.”

A flicker of doubt flashed in Hannah’s eyes. ‘Was it really just an accident? Or was someone trying to cover something up?” she thought.
