The music started playing, it was “Penguins’ Game.”

Most of them had danced to this Bunny Hop back in kindergarten. The beat was so addictive, it instantly got stuck in your head.
Jane stood center stage in a water-blue strapless gown and killer heels. She froze for a second, then started moving stiffly to the rhythm, her whole body awkwardly jerking along with the music. The sight was so ridiculous, it had everyone in stitches.
When Jane saw everyone in the audience cracking up, her face flushed with a mix of anger and humiliation. Only then did it dawn on her, she was the joke, the fool everyone was laughing at.
Utterly mortified, she gave up on the dance, hid her face in her hands, and rushed off the stage, wishing she could just vanish.
“HAHAHAHA…” The whole place erupted with laughter.
Someone in the crowd teased, “Hey, don’t run off! Keep dancing! I’m not done enjoying the show yet, haha!”
Suddenly, Hannah’s nonchalant voice echoed from the speakers. “Talk about awkward. Maybe next time, don’t just randomly volunteer people for these events. You never know who the real clown will be.”
The laughter in the room dropped off sharply. Within seconds, the whole place came to a screeching halt, especially the ones who’d voted for Hannah. Their smiles vanished; nobody felt like laughing anymore.
‘So this whole thing was just one big revenge prank?’ everyone thought.
‘Did Hannah really set Jane up on purpose, just to turn her into the clown for everyone to laugh at?’
‘Holy crap, what kind of beef do they have?’
‘Wait, is this event just about picking the Campus Queen, or are we also crowning the school’s top dog here?’
‘Or maybe she’s the real boss around here?!’
Everyone who’d voted for Hannah shivered, thinking to themselves, ‘Thank god she picked the lowest scorer for the prank and not one of us…’
That day, the newly crowned Campus Queen, Hannah, became the hottest topic on the school forum.
[Hannah Carter opened her mouth and totally owned the room with her perfect accent!]
[The new Campus Queen is seriously not someone to mess with, she had a whole class doing the Bunny Hop on stage!]
[Okay, I admit it, she’s officially my new goddess!]
Pretty much every thread on the forum’s homepage was about Hannah. Some loved her, some hated her, but one thing was obvious to everyone…
To mess with Hannah was to invite a front-row seat to one’s own social demise.

Backstage at the auditorium.
The competition was over, and the lounge was empty except for Hannah and Mr. Smith.

“Hannah, have you thought about going straight to Cavalor University for college? Maybe join our Linguistics Department? We’ve got a research group focused on Thalvarin literature, and we’d love to have you on board, Mr. Smith said with a friendly smile.
“No, I’m not interested,” Hannah declined without hesitation.
“That’s really a shame,” Mr. Smith said, sounding genuinely disappointed.
There were always grad students practically lining up, hoping he’d take them on as their advisor, but he always turned them
away.
It was rare for him to find someone truly promising that he actually wanted to mentor, only to get rejected flat out.
“So, any idea where you want to go for college?” he asked again.
He knew a ton of people, maybe he could even hook her up with a recommendation.
Hannah replied, “I’m aiming for a school in Kinswood.”
She wasn’t picky about which university, what really mattered was getting herself to Kinswood.
To be exact, her true aim was the Thole family in Kinswood.
“Wait, I thought you’d say Holroad or Auburnbridge or something like that. I never expected you to go for universities in Kinswood instead. Honestly, I’m surprised, and a little disappointed. Can you tell me why?” Mr. Smith asked, genuinely confused.
Hannah shrugged, “I’m patriotic.”
Mr. Smith was speechless.
‘You win,’ he admitted to himself.
“I’m off then,” Hannah said, standing up and heading out without another word.
Mr. Smith could only sigh and dial up Wolfram. “Wolfram, we’ve let a real gem slip through our fingers. It’s Cavalor’s loss, honestly…”
As Hannah left the lounge, she spotted Owen and Jasper hanging out in the hallway.
“Hannah, congrats on winning Campus Queen this year! Looking forward to working with you on the school anniversary performance,” Owen said, stepping up with a bright smile.
Hannah gave him a cool glance and just nodded.
Seeing her nod, Owen’s sunny, handsome face broke into a beaming grin.
If he actually had a tail, it’d be wagging nonstop, just like a husky greeting its owner at the door. He was a complete 180 from the serious guy who’d been warning Jasper and Jane just moments ago.
‘Wasn’t everyone saying Hannah was the one chasing Owen?’ someone thought.
‘Come on, it’s totally Owen who’s all over her!’
Jasper watched Owen suddenly switch up and felt a wave of irritation. ‘Bro code out the window the second a pretty girl shows up, huh?’ he thought.
“Sorry,” Jasper snapped at Hannah, his tone sharp.

Then he just walked off, looking totally pissed and embarrassed.
Owen wasn’t impressed by Jasper’s attitude, but he didn’t bother stopping him.
Hannah’s face was a total blank

“Hannah, I’m Claudia Warren, class president for Class One. I used to judge you, and I’m sorry about that. You’re a solid rival, and I hope we end up in the same class next semester, Claudia said, stepping right up to Hannah.
Claudia stood in front of Hannah, totally upfront as she reached out her hand.
Her honest vibe instantly reminded Hannah of Candy. Honestly, Hannah liked people who kept it real.
“Hello,” Hannah said, reaching out to shake her hand.
“Just saying, you might wanna watch out for Jane Dross,” Claudia said, giving Hannah a friendly warning.
Claudia had seen firsthand how two-faced Jane could be. After getting humiliated today, there was no way Jane would just let it slide.
“Oh,” Hannah replied coolly, “Who’s Jane Dross?”
Claudia just stared at her, totally at a loss for words.
“You know, the girl who just did the Bunny Hop on stage,” Owen chimed in.
Hannah raised an eyebrow. “Is she really that good?”
Owen waved it off immediately. “No way! You’re on a whole other level!”
Claudia was at a loss for words.
Hannah was planning to head over to Skycrest House today to check in on Hedy.
She’d always thought Barnaby was staying there, so she’d never gone before.
‘I wonder how it’s doing, she thought.
Just then, a yellow Ferrari pulled up in front of her. The window rolled down, it was Owen.
“Hannah, heading home? Want a ride?” Owen offered.
Hannah didn’t hesitate. She opened the back door, got in, and gave him the address for Skycrest House.
Ten minutes later.
Owen pulled up at the west gate of Skycrest House, glanced at the security booth’s barrier, then looked over his shoulder at Hannah in the back seat.
“Which building and apartment are you in? Want me to drive you inside?” he asked.
‘Might as well figure out where she lives while I’m at it, he thought.
“No,” Hannah said, her slender fingers pushing open the car door as she stepped out without missing a beat.
Owen hurried to unbuckle, grabbed the bouquet from the passenger seat, and followed her out. “Hey, you forgot your flowers.

Hannah glanced at the bouquet, it was the one that a girl had handed her during the speech. She’d just left it in the lounge, never thinking Owen would actually bring it along.
“Thanks,” she said, taking the flowers.
Barnaby walked up to the gate just in time to catch the whole scene.
Sports car, some guy, a bouquet of flowers, and the girl he liked. What the hell?
‘I was just out on a mission, got myself banged up, and now I come back to this? Did I just get cheated on? Barnaby felt his world flip upside down.
“Hannah!” Barnaby’s voice rang out, low and tinged with anger.
There was a clear edge of irritation in his tone.
Hannah turned at his voice.
Just then, Hannah spotted Barnaby sitting in a wheelchair, dressed in gray loungewear, looking sickly pale. She stopped in her tracks, surprised to see him like that.
She couldn’t help but frown, worry flickering in her eyes, as she walked right up to him.
“What are you doing back?” she asked.
‘Damn, if I’d stayed away any longer, you’d probably be off with some other guy!’ Barnaby thought, jealousy twisting in his gut.
