The Real Heiress Is Coming Back (Hannah Carter) novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

B

Ginseng was easy to find in the market, but ginseng over a hundred years old? Now that was seriously hard to come by

Hannah fired up her laptop and logged into the Heaven Medical Network after a long time away she skipped past all the unread messages and reached out to a few top traditional medicine experts, but none of them had any century-old ginseng hidden away.

Just then, her phone buzzed, it was Barnaby

“It’s getting dark. Where are you?” His deep, magnetic voice came through the speaker.

Hannah glanced at the time. She hadn’t even noticed, but it was already seven.

Outside, the sky had gone completely dark, and the campus lights were on.

“I’m still at school,” she said.

“Where exactly are you?” Barnaby asked.

Hannah blinked in surprise. “Wait, you’re still on campus?”

‘Didn’t I tell him on WhatsApp earlier that I had duty today and would be late? I even told him to head home after he finished up,’ she thought.

“Yeah, I just wrapped things up. I’ll come find you. The building’s lights are off,” Barnaby replied.

“Stay where you are, I’ll come get you,” Hannah said.

As soon as Hannah pictured him in his wheelchair, she snapped her laptop shut, grabbed her coat, and locked the door behind her.

The Chemistry Laboratory Building was just a short walk from the classroom block. Hannah hurried down to the first floor and, stepping onto the campus path, spotted Barnaby.

The deserted walkway, bathed in the soft yellow glow of the streetlights, highlighted the sharp angles of his handsome face.

He sat upright, exuding an effortless nobility, as if he were seated on a throne rather than a wheelchair.

But the biting north wind had already left his hands, resting on the armrests, gray with cold.

Just picturing him wheeling himself around campus all alone, looking for her, Hannah’s heart softened a little.

“Why didn’t you call me earlier?” she asked, stepping closer, her breath forming a little cloud in the cold air.

In Brynlock, winter nights were always a few degrees colder than the days.

“I messaged you, but you didn’t reply,” Barnaby said.

His deep, magnetic voice had a hint of vulnerability, making him sound a little lost and helpless.

Hannah pulled out her phone, switched accounts, and finally saw that Barnaby had messaged her half an hour ago, saying he was coming to get her.

She suddenly felt a pang of guilt.

Barnaby picked up the cashmere blanket from his lap, trying to drape it over her shoulders, but he couldn’t quite reach her from his wheelchair.

“Come here,” he said, his lips barely moving.

Hannah caught on to his intention. She stood her ground right in front of him, looking down at him. “Maybe you could try standing up.”

Did she just embarrass me? Barnaby thought, feeling a little awkward.

But if he stood up right in front of her, she’d realize he didn’t really need the wheelchair anymore.

He reached up and took her hand.

Hannah froze for a moment. His hand was so big and cold, it made her heart skip a beat.

He suddenly pulled her into his arms.

Hannah jumped a little, but didn’t dare move, worried she might accidentally touch his injury.

His broad, solid chest was way warmer than his hands. She caught the faint scent of tobacco on him, mixed with the cold winter air, it snapped her awake.

Barnaby draped the blanket over her shoulders, his palm settling on her back as he pulled her in tighter, taking in her soft

scent.

The deserted campus path, bathed in the soft yellow glow of the streetlights, stretched their shadows out long and thin.

Suddenly, a car’s headlights swept over them as it turned onto the path. Hannah came back to herself and quickly stepped

back.

Barnaby’s face darkened for a split second as he shot an annoyed look at the car coming their way.

Inside, Ronin felt two icy stares lock onto him. He shivered and quickly hit the brakes, nerves on edge.

‘Boss, I really didn’t mean to!’ Ronin thought, his heart racing.

Recognizing the familiar license plate, Hannah walked over and opened the car door. Seeing Ronin behind the wheel, she asked offhandedly, “Back from your annual leave?”

“Yes, Ms. Carter,” Ronin replied.

‘I never even got a vacation!’ Ronin grumbled to himself.

On the way back, they got caught in rush hour traffic. The drive that usually took ten minutes dragged on for half an hour, and they still weren’t home yet.

Hannah was leaning back in the rear seat, playing on her phone, when she suddenly felt a weight on her shoulder, Barnaby had rested his head there.

She turned and found his face just inches away. ‘Wait, is he actually asleep?’ Hannah thought, stunned.

From this angle, she realized just how ridiculously thick his eyelashes were, he could honestly be an eyelash model. With his eyes naturally closed, they cast a soft shadow on his skin, which was smoother than most girls’.

The streetlights outside traced the sharp lines of his nose and jaw, making him look almost sculpted.

Seriously, his looks were so outrageously perfect, it was almost criminal.

Hannah couldn’t take her eyes off him.

Ronin was focused on driving. The traffic finally cleared, and he hit the gas, spotting the Skycrest House just up ahead. He

glanced in the rearview mirror

He was subjected to an public display of affection

If I hit the brakes now, will I wake Boss up? And will he get pissed at me? Ronin wondered.

Then he remembered the icy glare Barnaby had shot him before getting in. Suddenly, it all made sense. Ronin casually turned the wheel left and just cruised right past the entrance.

All for Boss’s happiness… and my year-end bonus, Ronin thought to himself.

So he just kept driving around the complex, three full laps…

By the time he was about to start his fourth round, the security guard at the gate had finally had enough. He recognized the resident’s license plate and came out to flag Ronin down.

“Hey, are you new or something? Still can’t find the entrance? You’ve gone around three times already, I’m getting dizzy just watching you,” the guard complained.

Ronin hit the brakes, jolting Hannah out of her daze, and even Barnaby woke up, startled.

Ronin could only stare, lost for words.

Hannah was speechless.

Barnaby was at a loss for words.

Back home, nobody mentioned the whole car fiasco. After dinner, Hannah reminded Barnaby to take his medicine, then went to her room to shower and freshen up.

She slipped into her pajamas, flopped onto her bed, and opened WhatsApp, switching over to her account: The Nameless Healer.

The last message from The Scepter House’s Master was still sitting there: [Unless you become my wife.] Hannah paused, then a sudden idea popped into her head.

Her fingers moved quickly as she typed out a reply.

She was just about to send a photo when her phone suddenly buzzed, it was a call from Felicity.

She answered, and Lucian’s voice came through. “I called you, but you didn’t pick up or text back. But you answer Mom’s calls right away. Am I even your real brother anymore?”

That’s when Hannah remembered, she’d seen Lucian’s call earlier but totally forgot to call him back.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“Can’t I call you just to talk? Why aren’t you coming home again?” Lucian grumbled.

Hannah listened to him complain, and to her own surprise, she didn’t hang up, she just minimized the call instead.

She was just about to get back to negotiating with The Scepter House’s Master about snagging that century-old ginseng when

she suddenly spotted the photo she’d just sent in the chat. She shot up from her bed and instantly deleted it.

‘Wait, when did I even save that photo?’ Hannah thought, her heart nearly stopping.

Meanwhile, downstairs in the study, Barnaby was checking his phone.

The Nameless Healer: [Can the Master’s wife be a guy?]

Barnaby was at a loss for words.

There was a photo.

It showed Barnaby biting the hem of his white shirt, one hand holding his phone up to the mirror, the other tugging down his waistband to show off his killer V-line.

Barnaby had just opened the photo when the sender suddenly unsent it.

But there was no doubt, it was the one he’d sent Hannah before.

“This girl actually saved my photo?’ Barnaby thought, totally caught off guard.
