Nina forced a weak laugh before submerging her head back underwater, letting out a stream of bubbling sounds.
Jensen didn’t say a word, but the tips of his ears turned pink.
For seven straight days, Nina and Jensen walked home from school together. Nobody noticed, though—all the attention at Linholt High was fixed firmly on Chase and Katrina.
After his mother was called to school that day, Chase had fought with his family over Katrina, even threatening to give up his entire inheritance from the Mercer family. He had nearly given Cecilia a heart attack from the stress.
The teachers at school could do nothing about the pair. Over the past few days, they’d been inseparable, acting like a head–over–heels young couple.
Inside the swimming pool, Nina swam 800 meters without stopping. Jensen stood by the pool, timing her laps with a stopwatch.
When Nina finished, a faint smile crossed Jensen’s face. “Not bad. You’ve improved.”
“Why is Nina here again?”
A voice cut through the air from the other side of the pool. Tara and several other girls from their class had just arrived, all wearing swimsuits.
“Nina, no matter how hard you practice, it won’t change anything. Chase is with Katrina now- they’re officially together. Even the teachers are fine with it. Snitching on them won’t help you at all.”
Tara had always been quick to defend Katrina.
Just then, Katrina stepped out from the group. She wore a frilly pink one–shoulder swimsuit that stood out sharply against the plain blue school–issued swimsuits everyone else wore.
“Tara, let it go. There’s no point in talking about it anymore,” Katrina said, pretending to be generous and not holding a grudge against Nina.
One of the nearby girls exclaimed, “Katrina, your swimsuit is gorgeous! Did Chase get it for you?”

Katrina nodded shyly. “He said the school swimsuits weren’t nice, so he bought me a new one specially.”
As she spoke, a girlish, flustered smile played on her lips.
Nina recognized the swimsuit instantly–it was a luxury brand, costing over 1,000 dollars. The necklace around Katrina’s neck was worth tens of thousands, and there was a new watch on her wrist that hadn’t been there before.
In just one week, Chase had spent nearly six figures on Katrina.
He was absolutely spoiling her.
Nina thought back to her past life. After she and Chase got engaged, he’d still acted cold and distant. He’d never once offered to buy her a gift, and their engagement party had been rushed and poorly done.
After graduation, they’d gone straight to City Hall to get married with no wedding at all.
All she’d had was a ring that didn’t even fit properly.
Back then, Chase had told her parents that the Mercer Group’s business was unstable, and he’d promised to give her a grand wedding once the company was doing better.
But she’d died in the psychiatric hospital before that wedding ever happened.
Looking back now, Nina realized the truth–Chase hadn’t been poor. He’d just refused to spend a single dollar on her.
“Look! Chase is here!” someone shouted.
Chase walked toward Katrina. In full view of everyone, he took her hand naturally. “You look beautiful in that.”
Katrina blushed deeply.
Watching from the pool, Nina felt her stomach twist in disgust.
Suddenly, Jensen stood up from the side of the pool and said calmly to Nina, “Let’s go somewhere else.”
Nina was more than ready to leave this mess. But Chase, who hadn’t paid her any attention lately, spoke up abruptly.
