Jensen sat by her side, staying with her for a long time until a voice drifted from the doorway.
“Jensen, that’s enough.”
Caleb was standing just outside the room. “Don’t forget–you’re engaged.”
Jensen stiffened for a fraction of a second. “You’re overthinking it,” he said flatly.
Without waiting for a reply, he walked out of the room. Caleb glanced at Nina, who was still passed out on the bed, his gaze darkening.
“If you actually care about Nina,” Caleb said quietly, “then you should break off the engagement with that Beaumont woman.”
“That’s none of your business,” Jensen replied coldly, heading straight for his own room.
The next morning, Nina blinked her eyes open, her head heavy with sleep. The first thing she saw was Caleb sitting beside her bed, his chin resting on his hand as he dozed off.
“Ah!” she yelped, jolting upright.
Startled, Caleb practically leaped out of his chair. “What are you doing?! You scared the life out of me!”
“Why are you even in my room?”
“Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten how much you drank last night.”
“I…” Nina frowned, her head beginning to throb. She hadn’t completely blacked out, but her memory of the night was a hazy mess. “I remember meeting up with Charlotte. We both had a lot to drink… after that, things get blurry.”
Caleb raised an eyebrow. “So you don’t even remember how you got home?”
“Did
you pick me up?”
“As if I’d even know where to look for you,” Caleb said. “Jensen brought you back last night. For your sake, I hope nothing… scandalous happened between you two. Otherwise, we’ve got a serious problem on our hands.”
“Jensen?” Nina paused, genuinely surprised. She hadn’t expected it to be him. Then, something clicked, and her eyes narrowed. “What do you mean ‘scandalous‘? And what kind of problem

are you talking about?”
Caleb gestured vaguely. “Scandalous as in you and a man who is very much engaged.”

Nina’s expression darkened. Caleb pressed on, “And it’s a problem because I cornered Jensen about it last night. He has no intention of calling off the wedding.”
Nina let out a weary, bored sigh. “Well, obviously. Why would he throw away an engagement just because I got a little drunk? What a pointless question.”
“I’m looking out for you here,” Caleb shot back. “If you actually have feelings for Jensen, and if he feels the same, then breaking off the engagement would be the best move for everyone.”
“What are you even talking about?” Nina climbed out of bed, throwing the covers aside. Her head was pounding from the cheap alcohol. “We lived together for a year when we were kids. That’s it. Am I suddenly supposed to be hopelessly in love with him? Give me a break.”
With that, she disappeared into the bathroom to wash her face.
Caleb trailed after her, his voice rising. “Nina, seriously, use your head for once. If Jensen didn’t care about you, why would he go looking for you last night? This city is huge and packed with bars. He was out there for over two hours before he brought you back. If you were just some random person to him, he wouldn’t have gone to all that trouble.”
Nina remained unfazed, casually wiping her face with a towel. “He probably just brought me home because he promised my parents he’d look after me. If you don’t believe me, ask them yourself. They’ll tell you the exact same thing.”
“You” Caleb started, looking like he was about to explode, but he eventually just let out a frustrated sigh. “You’re hopeless. A total lost cause when it comes to love.”
He had just turned to leave the room when Nina called out to him.
“Hey, wait a second.”
“What now?”
