Chapter 50 Pretty Intimate
The way he said it carried a hint of something suggestive, and Jensen’s brows drew together.
Nina, completely unfazed, said, “Don’t worry, Hunter. Thanks for helping!”
Before she could finish, Jensen had already grabbed her arm and was pulling her in the opposite direction.
“Lunch.”
His voice was cool, with a trace of irritation underneath.
Nina had no choice but to follow. “What’s wrong with you? Are you upset?”
“No.”
“Then why are you in such a hurry to drag me away?”
They had barely taken a couple of steps when they ran straight into Chase.
The moment Chase saw Nina, his expression darkened. His gaze dropped to Jensen’s hand gripping her arm.
“Pretty intimate, aren’t you?”
Bruises from yesterday’s beating still marked Chase’s face. He let out a cold laugh. “Nina, and you still dare say you’re not with Jensen?”
Nina frowned. “What does that have to do with you? Shouldn’t you be looking after your own girlfriend? Or did you come all the way over here just to get yourself told off?”
“What?” Chase’s gaze flicked between her and Jensen.
He hadn’t expected it–the girl who used to trail after him now turning around and cozying up to Jensen instead.
But remembering what Cecilia had told him before he left the house that morning, Chase forced himself to hold back. He stepped closer, his voice turning sharp. “Nina, come with me.”
The command in his tone instantly annoyed her.
“If you’ve got something to say, say it. Otherwise, don’t waste my lunch break.”
Her attitude caught him off guard. He didn’t miss the clear disgust in her eyes.
Something tightened in his chest, like a blockage he couldn’t shake. “I need to talk to you alone.”
“No one here’s a stranger. Say it.”
Nina wasn’t playing along.
Chase’s expression darkened. “Nina!”
“Looks like you’ve got nothing to say,” Nina said lightly. “Jensen, let’s go eat.”
Chapter 50 Pretty Intimate
She reached for Jensen and started to head back toward Class A.
se immediately stepped in front of her, blocking the way. “Don’t think I don’t know you went to see my mom over the really think pulling something like that will make me go soft on you? Dream on.”
made Nina pause for a second. So that’s what he meant–the meeting with Cecilia about the shares.
d he actually thought it was for the Mercer family’s benefit?
She let out a short, mocking laugh. “I was handling something for my dad. Don’t flatter yourself, Chase.”
“I’ll admit, you play hard to get pretty well,” Chase said, his tone edged with contempt. “But I already have Katrina. There’s no chance between us. If my mom hadn’t asked me to invite you over for dinner, I wouldn’t have come looking for you.”
Every word made it clear–this wasn’t his idea. He was only doing what Cecilia told him to.
Nina knew him too well, in this life and the last.
Chase had always been rebellious, never willing to follow his family’s arrangements. The more they pushed, the more he resisted
Now he was going out of his way to stress that he didn’t like her–that he was only here because he’d been made to invite her to dinner at the Mercer house.
