Looking at Katrina’s gentle face, Nina took the handkerchief without a word. She was sweating heavily, so the cloth quickly became soaked.

Nina smiled and handed the damp handkerchief back to Katrina.

Katrina flinched in disgust, her movements stiff.

Nina asked, Katrina, what’s wrong? You’re not disgusted by me, are you?

Katrina cared deeply about her image in class. She forced a smile, swallowing her revulsion as she took it. Of course not! We’re best friends. Why would I ever be disgusted by you?

Good.

Nina smiled at hera smile brimming with a confidence she’d never had before.

Katrina stared, confused.

She couldn’t name exactly what was different about Nina, but something had changed.

Though Nina still kept to herself and rarely spoke to others, her entire presence felt nothing like it used to.

Nina returned to her seat.

Katrina followed and sat beside her. Watching Nina gulp down water, Katrina pulled a box of chocolates from her desk.

Nina, these are imported chocolates my dad brought me. I bet you’ve never tried them. I remember you used to love chocolateyou can have the whole box.

Nina smirked inwardly at the chocolates.

She’d been insecure as a kid, but she hadn’t always been this heavy. In her first year of high school, she’d been five feet five inches tall and weighed about 140 pounds. Then, for no reason, she’d ballooned up to 200 pounds.

At the time, she’d blamed stress. But later, she’d realized something was wrong.

Her weight gain had started exactly when she’d become friends with Katrina.

In her past life, she’d asked a doctor. He’d said a teenage girl couldn’t gain 60 pounds that

quickly unless she ate recklesslyor was given hormones that caused rapid weight gain.

After thinking about her diet and exercise back then, Nina became even more certain.

Katrina hadn’t just tempted her with rich foodshe’d drugged her to make her fat.

Go on, don’t be shy. I know you’re working hard on your diet. A little piece won’t hurt.

With that, Katrina shoved the chocolates into Nina’s hand. Suddenly, Nina gasped and dropped the entire box on the floor.

A loud noise echoed through the classroom.

Lisa Bell, the foreign language teacher, looked up from the front and adjusted her glasses. What’s going on? Nina, Katrinastand up!

At the sound of her name, Katrina bit her lip, mortified.

She’d always been the perfect student. This was the first time she’d ever been called out by a teacher.

Lisa was known for being strict. She walked over and glanced at the spilled chocolates.

I’m sorry, Ms. Bell. It’s my fault. Katrina saw I was hungry after running and offered me chocolate, but I dropped it by accident.”

Nina took the blame immediately.

Running? Nina, are you trying to lose weight?

Nina nodded.

Lisa was an adult and saw right through Katrina’s scheme. This is class! What are you doing passing out chocolates? I’m confiscating these.

With that, she bent down and picked up the box.

Katrina’s face fell as her expensive imported chocolates were taken away.

Losing the chocolates was one thing, but those chocolates had been drugged!

They’d been expensive too, and she’d hated to waste them. She’d only used them because Nina had started losing weight.

Beside her, Nina smiled inwardly as Katrina’s plan failed, then sat back down.

This box of chocolates was far too expensiveonce confiscated, it would surely end up in her stomach.

Nina couldn’t wait to see how Katrina would clean up this mess.

When class ended, Katrina rushed to the teacher’s office to apologize to Lisa.

Lisa saw how sincere Katrina was and accepted her apology, but Katrina’s eyes stayed fixed on the chocolate box on her desk.

Katrina said, Ms. Bell, Nina really loves those chocolates. Can I please take them back to give to her?

Nina’s on a diet, right? You shouldn’t give them to her,Lisa said firmly. Focus on your studies. I’m keeping these chocolates to teach you a lessonno more passing things during

class.”

Katrina knew she couldn’t get them back. She opened her mouth to say something, then closed it.

She couldn’t exactly say the chocolates were laced with pills.

Lisa glanced at her. Is there something else?

NNogoodbye, Ms. Bell.

Afraid of being caught, Katrina hurried out of the office.

Her heart raced.
