“Maybe it was one of her friends,” Brie said softly from the side, trying to downplay the situation.

“Friends? A hillbilly like her?” Danica added and twisted the story with dramatic flair. “Grandma, I heard some shallow girls get themself a sugar daddy to buy them stuff so they can show off.”

“Watch your mouth,” Victoria warned, frowning. “We don’t use that kind of language here. But still, that does sound strange. I’ll ask her when she’s come home. Our family has a good reputation. I won’t allow anyone to ruin it.”

Just then, Geneva walked in. She glanced around and asked in confusion, “Cassia’s not home yet?”

“Hmph! Mom, you’re so unfair. You only care about her now,” Danica complained, stomping her foot and pouting.

“Oh, cupcake, I just didn’t see her,” Geneva said, puzzled. “Didn’t you come home together?”

“Hmph, you can ask her yourself when she gets home! Who knows what kind of shady things she’s been up to?” Danica snapped. She used to be the center of her mother’s world until Cassia showed up. That bumpkin was all that mattered to her.

As she spoke, the front door opened. Cassia walked in, a bag slung over her shoulder, her face calm and indifferent.

“Stop right there!” Victoria’s authoritative voice cut through the air. She was fuming the second she saw Cassia. “Where have you been? Do you even respect this family? You can’t just come and go as you please!”

Cassia stopped. Her eyes met Victoria’s–deep, steady, and cold. Even someone of Victoria’s age felt a chill crawl up her spine.

“I just got back from school. Is there a problem?” Cassia’s voice was calm and cool. She wanted to ignore Victoria, but since she was the elder, she stayed polite.

“Hmph! I’m warning you,” Victoria snapped. “Our family has always been proper. Don’t you dare bring any of your bad habits into this house.”

Bad habits?

Cassia’s eyes turned sharp and icy, like an arrow dipped in frost. Her stare made the room drop a few degrees colder.

“What are you glaring at Grandma for?” Danica jumped in, smug and fearless. “Don’t tell me you didn’t ride off in a luxury car today! What? Are you a sugar baby? Did some rich guy buy you that?” Danica couldn’t care less. She was determined to crush Cassia’s confidence once and for all.

“What nonsense are you talking about?” Cassia’s temper started to flare. That accusation cut deep. It was an insult to her dignity.

“Hmph! If you have done it, just admit it,” Danica said with mock pride, clearly enjoying her misery. She hoped to kick her out of the house.

Cassia shot her a cold glance and swung her backpack over her shoulder. She walked upstairs without another word.

“See? That’s exactly what I mean!” Danica complained loudly.

Geneva stood quietly to the side, watching everything Danica said and did. Her face hardened. “Danica, she’s your sister. You can’t talk about her like that.”

When had her daughter become so spoiled?

All that pampering had made her rude and thoughtless.

“Ugh, you’re so annoying!” Danica huffed and stomped away, her face full of anger.

Victoria sighed, shaking her head. “See? Ever since you brought that girl back, this house hasn’t known a moment of peace. Ever since that disaster moved in, it’s been one mess after another. What a curse on this family.”

“Mom, this isn’t Cassia’s fault,” Geneva said firmly. She knew how much pain Cassia had endured. Never in her life did she think her own family would treat the girl this way after everything she’d been through.

Later that evening, Vance and Aspen came home.

After hearing what happened, Vance wanted to give Cassia a lecture–but she never came downstairs. Geneva had to bring her dinner up to her room.

Danica noticed most of the family still sided with her. She finally calmed down a little.

Fine. That hillbilly and I are enemies now. I’ll make sure she gets kicked out of here soon.

Brie, watching the whole thing unfold, couldn’t help but smile.

Everything was falling right into place. All she had to do now was sit back and enjoy the show.

Draven had been out searching for days, but he hadn’t found any leads. The frustration was starting to burn inside him.

“Boss, you need to be patient. Let’s wait a bit longer,” Seven said carefully. He hadn’t given up on their mission, though this time, things truly felt strange.

Every time they managed to uncover a lead, someone on the other side picked up on it. The trail vanished again, wiped clean without a trace. It was eerie.

“I’ll give you two more days. That’s my limit,” Draven said, his voice cold and sharp, like it came from deep within his chest. Just from that tone alone, anyone could tell how angry he was.

This was a complete waste of time. He refused to believe that the miracle doctor could disappear into thin air.
