Chapter 11 The Family Meeting
Jake knew one thing for sure. Once his boss made a decision, nothing could change her mind.
Listening to Cassia’s calm, almost careless words, he couldn’t help but sigh.

He really didn’t understand why she went back to her birth family. Those people never treated her right. One day, they’d regret everything they’d done to her.
As he was thinking, something suddenly came to mind. “Oh, right, boss,” Jake said, leaning forward. “Someone’s been asking around about you. Actually, they did more than that. Those people are looking for you. They’re from Vrastin. Heard they want you to treat one of their family members. I’ve blocked them a few times. What should we do about this?”
Cassia’s answer was short. “Not interested.” She had no desire to get involved in that mess.
People from Vrastin were all high and mighty, always acting superior. If they were looking for her so openly, they were probably rich or powerful. These were exactly the kind of people she wanted to avoid. Right now, she just wanted peace.
“They’ve already tracked you to Zrario,” Jake added. “Seems like they came prepared. They know quite a bit about you.”
Cassia was getting impatient. “Ignore them. You handle it.”
Don’t be fooled by Jake’s laid–back attitude. Behind that easy grin, he ran a massive black–market network. His connections reached everywhere, so handling a few people snooping around was nothing he couldn’t
manage.
He and Cassia had met by accident once. They helped each other through a dangerous situation. Since then, they’d become close friends.
Jake was reliable. Cassia trusted him.
He was one of the few people who actually knew who she really was.
So when Cassia told him to take care of something, he said easily, “No problem. I’ll handle it.” For Jake, this was nothing. He’d already cleaned up trouble for her several times before.
They chatted a little longer before hanging up. Jake even offered to drive her to school the next day.
Cassia agreed. Her new car was yet to arrived, so she decided to let Jake pick her up.
After the call, Jake leaned back in his chair and chuckled. “That family’s a bunch of idiots. Give it time. They’ll be kicking themselves for how they treated her.”
That same evening, the family gathered in the living room for a family meeting.
The topic of discussion? Cassia.
Ironically, the main subject of the meeting wasn’t even there.

Vance sat on the couch, frowning slightly. The past few days had been a mess, with too many problems piling up at once.
And now, the strange tension hanging in the house only made him grow even more restless.
Ever since Cassia came back, everything seemed to go wrong. Could she really be a jinx, bringing bad luck wherever she went? Born to make things difficult for him?
The thought crossed his mind more than once.
“Dad, are you even listening to me?” Danica complained, annoyed to see him zoning out.
“Huh? What did you say?” Vance asked, snapping back.

“I said you need to go to school tomorrow and transfer Cassia out. I don’t want her in my class. She’s such a hillbilly. If people find out we’re related, I’ll die of embarrassment!” Danica said angrily.
“Danica, you need to be more understanding,” Vance tried to reason with her. “She’s a Wood now. If she went to some random public school, what would people think of us? We have a reputation to keep.”
“Hmph!” Danica pouted, her lips sticking out.
“Alright, alright,” Vance sighed. “Tell you what–this weekend, I’ll have your mom take you shopping. You can buy the prettiest clothes you want.”
“Really? Then I want something from Seer! They just released a new limited collection, and I love it!” Danica’s eyes lit up the moment she mentioned the brand.
Everyone knew owning a Seer outfit was a big deal.
Vance had no idea how expensive the clothes were. He thought it was just another fashion label, so he agreed right away. “Sure, buy whatever you like.”
Danica was overjoyed.
This is amazing! Hmph! I know I’m still his favorite girl!
Meanwhile, Cassia was upstairs, lying on her bed. She was bored out of her mind, lazily sketching on a blank sheet of paper.
The next morning, Cassia came downstairs. Geneva spotted her right away and greeted her warmly, inviting her to join breakfast.
Brie and Danica were already seated at the dining table. The sisters were chatting and laughing together as if Cassia didn’t exist.
Once breakfast was over, the girls stood up, ready to leave.
Cassia had planned to have someone pick her up, but she didn’t like drawing attention. Since Geneva was

watching, she had no choice but to ride with them.
Under Geneva’s watchful eyes, the three girls got into the car.
Cassia sat in the front passenger seat, while Brie and Danica sat in the back.

On the way to school, Danica purposely raised her voice. “Ugh, how annoying. It’s way too early to be stuck in a car with someone I can’t stand.”
Brie tugged lightly on her sleeve, signaling her to stop.
Danica ignored her. She went on with a mockery tone, “Brie, don’t be scared of her. She won’t be coming to school with us much longer anyway. Dad said if she doesn’t do well in next month’s City Finals, she’ll have to drop out.”
That was exactly what their father had told Harold, the only reason Cassia had even been allowed to transfer in.
Brie’s lips curled slightly. She was secretly thrilled.
So that’s it? Perfect. Cassia’s days here are numbered.
