Chapter 12 The New Girl
The City Finals were tough–almost as hard as the SATs.

Brie worked hard all year and usually ranked in the top 20 in the whole city. With Cassia’s level, she figured the girl would probably end up last. No doubt about it.
That meant Brie didn’t need to worry about losing her spot as the campus belle.
The thought made her quietly delighted.
Cassia overheard and rolled her eyes. Seriously? Can these girls talk any louder? From the moment we got in the car, they hadn’t stopped chattering.
When they finally arrived at school, Cassia got out first. She slung her backpack over one shoulder and walked off without looking back.
Danica and Brie were happy to keep their distance.
They linked arms and strolled toward the school entrance.
Then Danica suddenly froze and grabbed Brie’s arm. “Brie, three o’clock–look that way. Is that Kaleb?”
He was pretty far away; Danica couldn’t see clearly.
Brie stopped too. Of course she knew who Kaleb Gill was.
The Gills were one of the top families in Zrario. Kaleb himself was outstanding–smart, athletic, and well- liked. He was in Brie’s class. The two of them often took turns being first in the grade. Their classmates even joked that they were the perfect match.
Brie felt a little flutter of pride. A guy like him–smart, handsome, and from a great family–was perfect
for her.
“It’s him,” Brie said softly.
Kaleb seemed to glance in their direction. Brie’s heart fluttered, and she blushed a little.
“Brie, I think he’s staring right at you,” Danica teased, her tone playful. She’d heard the rumors too and couldn’t resist bringing them up.
“Stop talking nonsense,” Brie said shyly, her cheeks turning pink. “Come on, we’re going to be late.”
Meanwhile, across the schoolyard. “Dude, what are you looking at?” A hand landed on Kaleb’s shoulder. It was his classmate, Josh Burke.
“That girl–she’s the new transfer, right?” Kaleb brushed off his friend’s hand and frowned slightly.
“Oh, you mean Cassia Wood from the advanced class? Yeah, she came yesterday.” Josh teased, “What’s this? Interested already? Can’t blame you though. She’s pretty. Even your rumored girlfriend doesn’t hold a candle to her.”

Kaleb shot him a sharp look. “Cut it out.”

The truth was, he was just curious. Watching the way the girl walked, the calm way she carried her backpack–something about her felt off.
Yeah, she doesn’t look like the type who studies hard. Probably just here to scrape by and get a diploma.
“Isn’t that so? But I heard she’s from some backwater town. Her grades were awful, and she didn’t even have friends. Guess life’s fair–if you’re that pretty, you probably don’t get brains too. But Brie’s different. She’s got both beauty and brains. She’s the lucky one, huh?” Josh analyzed, sounding like he’d just solved a
mystery.
Kaleb rolled his eyes. “You’re getting ridiculous.”
Josh whistled, then nudged him with his elbow. “Look. Speak of the devil. There she is–every guy’s dream girl, Brie! Are you going to say hi or what?”
“Let’s go. We’re going to be late,” Kaleb replied. He looked up just in time to meet Brie’s eyes across the schoolyard. They smiled faintly at each other, then quickly looked away.
“Brie, I saw that! You two were totally flirting at each other,” Danica teased with a mischievous grin.
Brie’s cheeks turned bright pink, glowing like she’d brushed on blush.
“Stop it, we’re going to be late!” she said quickly, hiding her shyness behind a rush of urgency.
The two hurried toward their classroom, laughter fading down the hallway.
By the end of the morning, Cassia was bored out of her mind.
Finally, the bell rang.
She slung her backpack over her shoulder and was the first to step out. She planned to wait by the corner of the street for her ride.
