Chapter 144 She’s Just Dumb
The call barely rang before it was answered.
“Sterling.”
There was no reply, but Cassia could tell Sterling was listening.

Cassia worried that Sterling’s family might give him a hard time again over the next few days, so she said, “Stay in your room as much as you can for the next few days. Try not to leave your room if you can.”
Silence was all she got.
“I’m going to hang up now.”
Cassia was just about to end the call when she heard Sterling’s clear, gentle voice.
“Where are you?”
He sounded worried, unable to hide how much he missed her.
Cassia frowned slightly.
There weren’t many people in this world she could be honest with, and she didn’t want to lie to Sterling.
“I’m at the hospital.”
She quickly added, “I’m fine. Just some stomach problem, so I have to stay here for a few days.”
Another stretch of silence.
“Don’t… lie to me.”
“I won’t.”
Neither of them was much of a talker. There was far more silence than conversation on that
call.
After Cassia hung up, she sat quietly on a bench, admiring the sunset and feeling at peace.
Just then, an annoying voice broke the calm.

To avoid drama, Vance hadn’t told anyone about Cassia’s leave from school except Victoria. Lilian hadn’t said a word to Danica, so of course Brie didn’t know either.
When neither Danica nor Brie saw Cassia at school all day, they just assumed she was skipping class again.
So when Brie saw Cassia at the hospital, she naturally thought Cassia was faking illness just to get out of class.
Cassia’s mood soured, and she shot Bric an irritated glance.
Kaleb was with Brie, but at least Danica hadn’t tagged along.
“Stop pretending to be sick, Cassia. If Dad finds out you skipped school, he’s going to be furious.”
Kaleb had felt a little bad seeing Cassia looking so sick, but after Brie spoke, all his sympathy vanished.
She’s so fake. Makes me want to puke!
“Pretending to be sick? I dare you to say that again.” Cassia’s eyes were ice cold.
Brie was holding a bouquet of lilies for a patient, while Kaleb carried a fruit basket.
School was over, and they were here to visit someone–but it wasn’t Cassia.
“Cassia, just go home. That trick won’t work on Dad or Grandma. You’ll only make them even angrier. Grandma’s not in good health, so stop upsetting her,” Brie said loudly, making sure everyone around heard her.
As Brie raised her voice, she saw several passersby glance over.
She was jealous because Cassia was much prettier than she was.
She wanted everyone to see Cassia as just a pretty troublemaker.
After Brie finished, she noticed even more people looking at Cassia with obvious disapproval.
“Your attitude is way too extreme. Dad and Grandma care about you—they really do. You’re Dad’s biological daughter and Grandma’s only real granddaughter. Stop wasting energy playing sick. Even if you don’t get into college, Grandma already promised to sign you up for piano club. I could even teach you if you want. Work hard, and Grandma will notice how good

you are.”
The more Brie talked, the more people looked down on Cassia.
Cassia listened, her impatience building.
“I’ve got two words for you.”
“Huh?”
Brie blinked, and Cassia calmly said, “Get lost.”
Brie stared, stunned, then her face flushed.
She pointed at Cassia, sputtering, “You… you…”
Before she could finish, Cassia cut her off.
