Hearing that, Cassia felt a warm sense of being cared for and cherished wash over her.
She didn’t answer, but the corners of her mouth lifted into a barely noticeable smile.
Draven kept waiting for Cassia to respond, but as he waited, he realized she had gone quiet.
He looked down and nearly burst out laughing.
She had actually fallen asleep.
The one time I try saying something sweet, and it doesn’t move her at all? Not even a little?
Draven shook his head helplessly and gently helped Cassia lie down, carefully tucking her in.
Cassia spent the next few days in the hospital.
Not seeing the fake, annoying members of the Woods family or hearing their voices put her in a great mood. She slept in and ate well every day. As a result, she was in much better spirits than before she was admitted.
That night, in the Wood Manor dining room, Vance, Victoria, Geneva, Danica, and Brie sat around the table having dinner.
“Brie, have some more,” Victoria said, placing a piece of fish fillet on Brie’s plate.
“Your Olympiad math competition is tomorrow, so get to bed early tonight. Whatever you want for breakfast, just tell your mom. You need to be in your best shape.”
“Thanks, Grandma.” Brie returned the favor, giving Victoria some meat. “Grandma, you should eat more, too. This is lean, so it won’t make you gain weight.”
Victoria was always careful about her figure, even at her age. Hearing Brie say that, she felt genuinely comforted by Brie’s thoughtfulness.
“Go, Brie! You got this!”
Danica cheered, pumping her fists to wish Brie luck for the math contest.
Vance and Geneva both smiled and gave Brie their own good luck wishes.
Brie nodded, grinning, then suddenly said, “It’s a shame Cassia’s still in the hospital. If she were home, I know she’d be rooting for me, too.”

At that, everyone’s expression darkened except for Geneva’s.
“Don’t bring her up at the table,” Victoria said sharply.
Danica frowned. “Yeah, the house feels better without her.”
Geneva tapped Danica lightly. “Don’t say that. She’s your sister.”
“She’s not my sister!”
Geneva fell silent, at a loss for words.

It’s been a month or two since we brought Cassia home, and Danica still hasn’t accepted her as her sister.
Maybe she just needs more time. I have to believe that she’ll accept Cassia someday.
Brie sipped her soup. “Cassia’s been in the hospital for days now. Whether she’s really sick or not, I think we should go at least once. If not… what if she starts telling people we mistreated her?”
Ever since Geneva learned Cassia was sick, she had wanted to visit. But she’d been handling all the housework alone, taking care of Victoria, Brie, and Danica, and she just hadn’t had time.
Now, finally, she had an excuse to go see Cassia.
Victoria’s face darkened even more.
Cassia being away was a rare break, and if it were up to her, Cassia could stay at the hospital a few more days.
After dinner, Vance spoke up. “Brie’s right, but I’m busy with work. Mom, you’re her grandmother, so you should go visit. She can’t stay in the hospital forever, and those bills add
up.”
Victoria’s face tightened at the mention of hospital bills.
“I’ll go bring her back right after dinner,” she said.
Vance turned to Brie and Danica. “You two should go visit, too.”
“Oh…”
“Okay, Dad.”
Danica and Brie agreed, not looking too happy about it.
