About half an hour before Vance called, inside the orphanage, Peter was having a nice dinner at the table with the kids.

Sterling still wouldn’t come out for meals, but Peter and the caretakers were used to it.

When dinner was over, they just left his meal outside his door.

“I heard Cassia’s sick?”

In the last room down the hall, Sterling cracked his door open. He kept his head down, ear tilted, listening to the conversation.

“Which hospital is Cassia in?” one of the caretakers asked.

“Her dad said it’s Harbor Pines Hospital on Sycamore Road,” Peter replied.

“Harbor Pines Hospital? Fancy place!”

The caretakers all gasped in surprise, mostly just envious.

“Harbor Pines Hospital…” Sterling repeated the name to himself.

After dinner, everyone started cleaning up, and Sterling took the chance to slip out.

Once he was outside, he pulled up the GPS on his phone.

He hadn’t gone out alone in ages. He understood navigation but had never tried it.

After leaving the orphanage, the crowds got thicker. With his autism, big crowds made him panic.

The noisy laughter and shouting everywhere made Sterling deeply uncomfortable, but all he wanted now was to see Cassia.

After about ten minutes, Sterling got lost and ended up crouched by some bushes along the

street.

His phone had just been snatched out of his hand, and he was too scared to ask for help. He didn’t know what to do. Plus, it was rush hour, so there were people, lights, and noise everywhere.

Sterling huddled in the corner, shaking all over. He hugged his knees to his chest, digging his fingernails into his palms for comfort.

For him, that pain was the only thing that could distract him from the chaos around him.

“Hey kid, are you all right?”

He looked up and saw a woman with heavy makeup and flashy clothes.

Sterling shrank away, inching farther from her.

The woman looked at him, guessing that he wasn’t quite right mentally.

She studied his face.

He looked young and handsome, with some boyish innocence left.
