Cassia reminded Sterling to never let anyone at the orphanage or his parents see the new phone, or they would definitely try to get their hands on it.

“Okay.” Sterling nodded obediently.

That evening, she brought Sterling back to the orphanage.

Peter had been going out of his mind with worry, leading the entire orphanage staff and children in a search that turned the place upside down and inside out, practically tearing up the floorboards.

With over 50 people at the orphanage, not a single one could find a ten–year–old boy.

Peter was so furious he nearly had a heart attack.

Left with no choice, he asked Vance to have Cassia help with the search, and in his rage, he dragged his son and daughter–in–law away from their overtime work to join in.

“That little brat is nothing but trouble!”

Sterling’s parents resented being inconvenienced. Far from feeling worried, they only grew more bitter toward their younger son.

They told Ethan not to come help search, but he insisted on looking for his little brother.

So when Peter saw Cassia walk into the orphanage with Sterling following behind her, tears streamed down his face as he launched himself at Sterling like a football player going for a tackle.

“Don’t scare him,” Cassia said calmly, extending a hand to stop Peter, who was becoming emotional.

Everyone crowded around Sterling, showering him with concern and care. Only Ethan, after confirming his brother was unharmed, walked over to Cassia and said, “Thank you.”

“Mm.”

Cassia nodded expressionlessly, then turned and walked away.

Ethan watched her disappear into the darkness, as if she had never been there at all.

Ethan and his parents didn’t get home until late that night.

Ethan went to the bathroom to shower. Fiona couldn’t sleep and started chatting with Gary beside her.

“Don’t you think what happened today was strange?”

Gary was just about to sleep when his wife suddenly spoke up.

“Strange in what sense?”

Fiona propped herself up on her side, feeling more and more that something was off.

“Sterling has always been at that orphanage out in the backwater town. How could he suddenly end up

all the way at Sycamore Road? And Peter said he stays in his room all the time and never comes out on his own, even when called. With his severe autism, how would he have the nerve to run off by himself? All of us went looking and couldn’t find him. So how is it that Cassia just happened to be the one who did?”

Gary caught the implication in Fiona’s words.

“You mean… Cassia secretly put Sterling up to this?”

Fiona’s brow furrowed deeply.

“I’m Sterling’s mother. I’m not close with Cassia, so I shouldn’t make wild accusations. But at that orphanage, she’s the only one who can get through to Sterling.”

Gary’s expression turned grim.
