Brie was still fuming inside when she kicked off her shoes and heard Vance’s cold, questioning voice.
“Why are you home so late? Do you have any idea what time it is?”
Brie’s heart skipped a beat. She instinctively looked up at the clock hanging on the wall–11:30
p.m.
“Even Cassia got home before you! Do you even want to go to school tomorrow?” Vance’s voice thundered as he slammed his palm down on the marble coffee table.
Vance was furious about Brie coming home this late.
The loud bang shook the entire living room.
“I’m… I’m sorry, Dad! I … I…” Brie flinched at Vance’s explosive outburst. Her whole body trembled uncontrollably, and a cold sweat broke out across her back.
Even in her brand–new puffer coat, she felt as if she had been plunged into an ice bath.
She and Kaleb had just gone out for some free–range chicken soup after evening study hall because they were hungry. If Kaleb hadn’t been turned away at both restaurants and if they hadn’t run into Cassia and her group, she could have made it home before 10:30 p.m. That wouldn’t have counted as late.
But now it was 11:30 p.m. It was definitely late, and her father had caught her red–handed.
Suddenly, a spark of inspiration struck. She blurted out, “Dad, the reason I’m home so late is because I saw Cassia get into some guy’s car after school.”
Vance frowned when he heard this.
He assumed Brie was just trying to change the subject.
“What does your sister have to do with you? Tell me! From the time evening study hall ended at 9:30 p.m. until now, that’s a full two hours. Where were you?”
He didn’t care where Cassia went or what she did or who she was with. He only cared about where his pride and joy, Brie, had been and what she had been doing.
Brie thought to herself, I absolutely cannot let Dad find out I was on a date with Kaleb. I cannot let them know I’m in a relationship.

Brie stood with her shoulders hunched, head lowered, fingers fidgeting with the hem of her shirt. Her eyes were red and glistening with tears ready to fall.
She looked so pitiful that even someone with a heart of stone would melt at the sight.
“Dad, I’m sorry. I was just so worried about Cassia that I followed her. That’s why… that’s why I… Dad, I’m so sorry.”
Seeing Brie on the verge of tears, Vance couldn’t bring himself to say anything harsh. When he heard that she was late because she had been worried about her sister, his heart finally softened.
“So that’s what happened. I misjudged you.” Vance’s expression eased, and he waved her over, gesturing for her to sit beside him.
Brie took small steps toward the couch and sat down next to Vance.
Vance put his arm around Brie’s shoulder and patted it gently. “Next time you see your sister, don’t worry about her. You don’t need to look after her. But you, young lady, being out alone this late at night is dangerous. You understand?”
“Mm–hmm.” Brie nestled into Vance’s arms and nodded obediently. “I promise it won’t happen again.”
She really was Daddy’s little angel.
Vance felt warm and content inside.
But in Brie’s mind, the image of that handsome man from tonight kept surfacing.
She had always been confident that any man would be attracted to her. Yet that man had come specifically for Cassia.
The way he looked at Cassia was so tender it could make anyone swoon, and everything about him radiated an air of nobility.
Cassia had gotten into his car so naturally. He was probably that bitch’s boyfriend.
A total catch and incredibly handsome. He was even more handsome than Kaleb.
Jealousy burned through her veins.
Then Brie thought of something else.
Cassia’s boyfriend had appeared right in front of her and Kaleb. Wasn’t that just a slap in the
