Alfen couldn’t figure it out. What was the problem at home that made it difficult for them to share something this amazing with the family?
“Forget it. What’s done is done.”
When Alfen said that, Brie and Danica both let out a quiet sigh of relief.
“I already called your grandmother,” Alfen continued. “She said she would try her best to persuade Cassia, but so far, there’s been no response.”
He sighed. His words made Brie and Danica tense up again.
No wonder…
No wonder Mr. Hoge knew they had lied. And no wonder their parents and grandmother knew too.
Brie had always found it strange. She and Danica thought their lie was perfect. Not a single flaw. So how had the adults found out?
Now she understood. Alfen had called Victoria.
After Alfen left the classroom, Danica urged Brie to go eat. Brie turned to look at Kaleb.
“Kaleb, what do you want to eat tonight?”
Kaleb stood up from his seat.
“I already made plans to eat out with some friends. It’s all guys, so it wouldn’t be convenient to bring you.”
Brie stared at him, trying to find something different about him.
Something off. Maybe there was, or maybe there wasn’t.
Was she overthinking it? Or was Kaleb the one overthinking things?
“Oh, then I’ll just go to the cafeteria with Danica
“Mmm,” Kaleb replied. He turned and looked toward the classroom door.
Cassia didn’t meet his gaze. She saw Brie and Danica leave, then she walked away as well.
It was spring now. Cassia had taken off her bulky winter coat and changed into a thin, long-

sleeved school athletic top. It showed her slim figure even more clearly.
That slender silhouette looked proud and distant, like a flower blooming alone on ice. She kept people at arm’s length, yet carried a quiet, untouched grace.
Thinking about it, Kaleb had to admit something. No matter where Cassia appeared, eyes always followed her.
Part of it was her beauty. The other part was her cold presence.
But sadly, no matter how beautiful something was, without substance inside, it could still feel
empty.
Cassia was heading to the faculty building to find Draven. There was a shortcut this way, so she took it.
Ever since Shane gave Draven permission to freely enter and leave the school, that man had been coming by almost every day. It felt like he was one step away from installing a camera on her forehead just to keep an eye on her.
She had only passed by the honors classroom by chance and happened to see Brie and Danica being scolded by Alfen in front of everyone.
She had just taken a few steps away when Byron rushed over from another class.
“Cassia, want to go eat together? My treat.”
Byron was one of Zrario High’s two most popular guys, standing shoulder to shoulder with Kaleb. His presence alone drew attention.
Now he was inviting Cassia out to eat, and he even called her by name. The girls around them exploded with excitement.
“Wow, he actually asked Cassia out to eat!”
“I’m so jealous!”
Kaleb stood off to the side, watching the scene unfold. First, he looked surprised. Then his expression turned strange.
Byron had invited Cassia out to eat, right in front of everyone. That was basically a public confession. He was openly saying he wanted to pursue her
Seeing Byron and Cassia standing together mad Kaleb feel uncomfortable, though he could not explain why.
Byron and Cassia did not have the same pressure he and Brie had. They were not forced to
