The sudden question caught Ethan off guard. His face flushed at once, the shy red of a teenage boy.
“Hmm, that day by the road, she saved me. She also helped take care of my brother,” he said. “I wanted to thank her and get to know her, so I’ve been looking for her everywhere. I’ve been looking for a really long time.”
The more Ethan spoke, the angrier Danica became.
She had always liked boys like Ethan–bright and sweet. She had never been able to resist that type.
From far away, she hadn’t noticed much. Up close, though, she saw it clearly. There was a deep dimple on his cheek, and when he smiled, one small canine tooth showed. It was ridiculously cute.
He was both handsome and adorable at the same time. Exactly her perfect type.
But before she even had the chance to flirt a little, she heard him say he liked someone already. And of all people, it was Cassia–the one she couldn’t stand.
“I suggest you stop looking for her,” Danica said bluntly.
“Why?” Ethan tilted his head.
Danica tried hard not to be distracted by how cute he looked. She forced her voice to stay cold. “You might not know this, but Cassia has a terrible reputation at our school. She gets into fights with troublemakers from outside. She disrespects teachers and doesn’t get along with classmates. She even picks fights with her own family and often makes Dad and Grandma furious. And she lies all the time. She thinks she’s better than everyone. She-”
“Hey! Don’t talk about her like that!” Ethan snapped, his eyes wide with anger.
“I’m just telling the truth,” Danica said. “If you don’t like hearing it, that’s not my problem. If you don’t believe me, ask anyone.” She glanced the girls standing nearby.
“They’re in our grade. Ask them. You’ll know if I’m lying.”
Ethan bit his lips.
His father had always taught him to act like a gentleman, but this girl was openly trash- talking Cassia.

“I don’t believe you,” Ethan said firmly. “I only believe what I’ve seen. She’s not that kind of person!”
“But she is,” Danica insisted.
“She’s not!” Ethan shouted, his face burning red. All the gentlemanly manners his father had drilled into him were gone.
“Oh, I get it now. You’re just jealous because she’s prettier than you, so you’re making things
about her!”

“What?!”
Danica had been hit right where it hurt. Her face turned pale with anger.
“Who’s jealous of her?!”
“You are!”
“Say that again?”
“You-”
Before Ethan could finish, Danica grabbed the front of his shirt.
“What are you doing?” Ethan said nervously. “Hey! A gentleman uses words, not fists! I won’t hit a girl, but don’t push it!”
When a cute boy got angry, it wasn’t very scary at all. Danica didn’t care about his warning.
“So what if I push it?” she snapped. “What are you going to do about it?”
She let go of his collar and started shoving his shoulder instead.
Ethan believed in not fighting with someone like her. He sounded fierce, but he never raised a hand.
“Well? Say it!” Danica pushed him again and again. “What can you

Danica got carried away. She didn’t notice the stairs behind him and pushed him again.
Ethan stumbled backward. His heel slipped off the edge, and his balance was gone.
“Arghh! Arghhhh!”
The steps weren’t very high, but falling like that would still hurt.
Just as Ethan was about to hit the ground, a fast–moving figure flashed past. Right before he fell, someone grabbed him from behind and held him steady.
Ethan turned his head. When he saw the face he had been thinking about the whole time, his

“Cassia!”
Cassia held Ethan firmly, one hand supporting his back. Her face was grim, and she said nothing.
Ethan was so excited that his words tumbled out. “Cassia! I finally see you again! I’m so happy! Gosh! You saved me again!”
Danica had been scared too and quickly ran over to check.
Thankfully, nothing had happened.
Suddenly, Cassia looked at her. That look was dangerous.
Danica met her eyes; her heart thudded in fear.
“I–I didn’t mean it, I didn’t do it on purpose just now,” she said quickly.
“Didn’t do it on purpose?” Cassia’s voice was icy. “You pushed him down the stairs. You didn’t apologize once. And you think saying you ‘didn’t mean it‘ makes it like nothing happened?”
Danica knew she was in the wrong, but she was used to being unreasonable. And facing Cassia made her temper flare up. She raised her voice and snapped back, “It was his fault! He messed with me! And why didn’t he watch where he was going? How is that my problem?!”
The look in Cassia’s eyes grew even colder. After making sure Ethan was standing steady, Cassia stepped forward, walking straight toward Danica.
