“Stop staring. Ms. Wood just got a few minor injuries. She’ll be fine after a night’s sleep.”
Seven squatted down, watching Sterling’s face crumple as if he could fall apart any second. Annoyance welled up in him, but so did a pang of tenderness.
“If you keep staring like this, you will be the next one who needs help.”
Sterling’s chest heaved. His breaths came out broken and full of sobs.
Seven felt his palm dampen, and he let out a long breath as he looked up at the ceiling.
“Let’s go home.”
Still squatting, Seven lowered his hand, pulled a tissue from his pocket, and handed it to Sterling.
Looking at Sterling’s flushed face, Seven though that if he had a little brother this cute, he’d spoil him rotten. He wouldn’t be like Sterling’s parents, who always played favorites.
Afterward, Seven brought Sterling back to Dunstino Bay. Draven stayed at the hospital with Cassia.
Once they were back at Sterling’s place, Seven wasn’t in a hurry to leave.
“Are you scared to sleep alone? If you are, I can say here and keep you company.”
Usually, just knowing Cassia was right upstairs made Sterling feel safe, so sleeping alone here had never bothered him.
But tonight…
Sterling didn’t reply or pay Seven any attention.
“Hey, are you seriously giving me the cold shoulder now? Just a while ago, you were getting me water and even giving me a shoulder massage.”
“I… I never gave you a shoulder massage!” Sterling shot back at Seven, turning his head.
Seven felt a rush of happiness.
Why? Because he realized Sterling wasn’t scared of him like before.
Now he could even talk back.

And, something else he hadn’t noticed when the first came in–now the two of them were standing really close.
Before, Sterling would have hurried to move away at this distance.
Ms. Wood really worked wonders! Sterling’s autim is definitely improving. At this rate, he’ll probably be able to lead a normal life soon.
“Are you sure you’re not scared to sleep alone?”
Honestly, it was Seven who was uneasy. Leaving such a young kid alone at home meant anything could happen.
“Never mind. I’ll stay.” Seven looked toward the main bedroom.
“Kid, I’m going to your room. Your bed’s pretty big. We can squeeze in together, right?”
Before Seven even finished, Sterling had already marched back to his own room and shut the door.
“What an ungrateful brat!”
Seven complained at the closed door, then went to lie down on the couch.
This couch had been picked out by Draven specifically for Cassia. Lying here feels as nice as a five–star hotel bed.
So comfortable! This is pure bliss!
Seven closed his eyes and had just started to doze off when he heard the main bedroom door
open.
He tilted his head a little, opening one eye to peck.
Sterling tiptoed out of his room.
What’s he up to now?
Seven had no clue. With Sterling’s severe autism his actions were never easy to predict.
Sterling walked behind the couch and peeked sideways at Seven.
“Are … are you asleep?”
Curious about what Sterling was doing, Seven pretended to stay asleep.
Sterling snuck another look. When he saw Sever lying perfectly still, he figured Seven must

have fallen asleep.
But what if he woke up later?
Sterling stood to the side, nervously rubbing his feet together.
Seven peeked at Sterling. From that little gesture, he could tell that kid was nervous.
Sterling kept thinking about what had happened earlier.
Seven had gotten yelled at by Draven because of him.
It was all his fault for being so stubborn.

Sterling bit his lip, then called out in his soft voice, turning sideways toward Seven, “Se … ven.”
Just saying his name counts as paying him back. He said so.
This was the first time Sterling had addressed anyone so affectionately, aside from Cassia.
After calling out, his face turned red and he ran back to his room.
Once the door closed, Seven slowly sat up and stared at the door for a long moment.
That soft “Seven” still lingered in his ears, tickling at his heart like a kitten’s paw.
He covered his mouth and giggled.
That kid just keeps getting sweeter every day!
When Victoria got back to Wood Manor, Brie was already home.
Vance wasn’t back yet, but Danica had already come home from her gathering with friends.
Brie told Danica everything that happened tonight, but only the parts that wouldn’t get her in trouble.
“It’s fine, Brie. You’re a girl, of course you’re no match for a bunch of drunk drifters. It’s normal to get scared and run home by yourself. Grandma’s still outside. I’ll go with you to that alley, and if we run into those guys, I’ll let them know you can’t mess with the Woods and get away with it!”
Danica could understand why Brie did what she lid, but Brie herself couldn’t let it go.
She had left Victoria out there alone, and that thought made her uneasy.
