With grades like this, how am I supposed to face my parents?

“What am I supposed to do? If Mom and Dad see these scores, I’m getting a full–blown beating.” Danica stared at her report card, her head pounding.
Forget a beating–at this rate, she wouldn’t even make it into community college.
Her gaze drifted to Cassia’s report card. Every subject was a perfect score.
Cassia really is incredible. A true academic queen.
And I used to mock her? What an idiot I was.
Seeing that Cassia wasn’t sleeping but scrolling on her phone, Danica shuffled over and tugged gently at her arm.
“Cassia…”
Cassia set her phone down and looked at her.
It was annoying–but since Danica had stood up for her before, she’d tolerate it this once.
“What?”
When Cassia didn’t pull her arm away, Danica grinned.
“Can you tutor me?”
Cassia looked at the pitiful report card Danica was holding out.
Not a single passing grade. And her math score was in the single digits.
It was painful to look at. The kind of score Vance would consider disgraceful.
“I’m responsible for curing you. That’s it. Everything else isn’t my concern,” Cassia said.
“Don’t be so heartless, Cassia. You’re the top student in school.” Danica clung to her arm and nuzzled against it, acting cute. “I missed two months of classes. My grades tanked. The SAT is in a month. If you don’t help me, I won’t even get into a decent college. Please? Just help me?”
Back at Wood Manor, whenever I acted spoiled, everyone would give in to me.
Cassia treats me well now–surely she’ll agree.
But Cassia showed zero reaction.
“If you keep doing that, I’ll ignore you.”
Danica froze.
Her lips drooped instantly, shoulders slumping.

Cassia knew exactly what her problem was. She wasn’t going to indulge her like the Woods did.
If Danica thought everything could be solved by acting cute, it would only ruin her.
“I can help you. But I have one condition,” Cassia said at last.
Danica’s eyes lit up. “What condition?”
“Go back to Wood Manor.”
“What? Cassia, you want me to go back?” Danica tightened her grip on Cassia’s arm in panic.
“No! I don’t wanna go back! I wanna live with you! Cassia, I’m sorry. I won’t say things like that again. I-”
Cassia shook her head. “I’m not sending you back because I don’t want you:”
She had another purpose in mind.
While Cassia was talking with Danica, over in the honors class…
Brie’s reputation had collapsed, but she was still class president.

Standing at the podium, she announced, “Ms. Parker asked me to remind everyone that the parent–teacher meeting is next Monday. Please put your recent report cards in your desks so your parents can review them.”
As she spoke, she deliberately lifted her certificate for placing in the top three in the Olympiad math competition.
“Also, the Olympiad results are out. Some of our class made the top 10. You should have received your certificates.
“The school will arrange for students who placed in the top 10 to attend the National Olympiad in Vrastin in mid–May.”
“Okay.” The class barely glanced at her before lowering their heads to study.
Brie’s hand holding the certificate stiffened. She looked out at her classmates.
