Chapter 429 It Was Brie
When masters clash, one wrong move can cost the entire game.
Draven and the legendary chess player were evenly matched to begin with–his odds of winning were almost 50-50. But thanks to Seven’s interruption, he’d lost two rounds in a row.
“Sorry, Mr. Grey,” Seven muttered as he slowly backed away.
The office felt like a battlefield. Retreat seemed like the smartest option.
Under Draven’s icicle sharp glare, Seven slipped out of the room.
“Gosh.” He leaned against the door and sucked in a breath.
Honestly, he was more curious than ever about this so–called legendary player.
After all this time, that person could still keep pace with Draven–even when he was fully focused–and fight him to a standstill.
From what he and Draven had observed, the opponent seemed to stay up late and had impressive stamina.
So, it was probably not someone elderly like Henry.
But definitely older than Draven.
That last part was Seven’s personal guess. In his mind, no one younger than Draven could possibly be smarter.
In the next two rounds, Draven sharpened his concentration to its peak. His moves slowed slightly compared to usual.
That extra precision allowed him to win back two games.
But he was genuinely exhausted.
He lifted a hand and pressed at his temples.
It had been a long time since he’d poured this much focus and energy into something.
After school, Cassia stepped into the office and immediately saw Draven leaning back on the couch, looking drained.
“Didn’t sleep well last night?” she asked as she walked over.
The moment he heard her voice, half his fatigue faded.
“Played two rounds of chess just now.”
As he looked at her delicate, flawless face, an image of their future together surfaced in his mind.
Coming home every evening and seeing her waiting there…
That was the life he wanted most.
“Two rounds tired you out like this?”

Chapter 429 It Was Brie
Cassia couldn’t quite understand. In her opinion, his chess skills weren’t exactly taxing–he barely used his brain.
If he wasn’t even thinking that hard, how could he be tired?
Still, she said, “If you’re tired, take a break. I’ll sit here. It’s fine.”
She pulled over a leather chair and sat down.
“I need a little sense of security,” Draven said softly. “Sit closer.”
Cassia stared at him for a few seconds, then stood up and dragged the chair nearer, right beside his.

The two leather chairs ended up almost touching. With so little space, her right arm had nowhere to go, so she rested it on the armrest of his chair.
“Is this close enough?”
Draven’s gaze lingered on her pale arm, close enough to touch if he simply lifted his hand. A faint warmth flickered in his eyes.
“Yeah. I’ll just sleep for ten minutes.”
“Go ahead.”
He leaned back and closed his eyes.
Those ten minutes were deep and peaceful.
After school, Danica and Brie headed back to Wood Manor together.
In the car, Brie kept trying to start conversations, joking and chatting like before. But no matter what she said, Danica’s responses were distant.
It would never be the same again.
Brie felt a sting in her chest, but she reassured herself. Don’t rush. Don’t rush. It takes time. If I patiently explain everything, Danica will come around. She always does.
Back at Wood Manor, Danica claimed she needed to unpack and slipped into her room. She grabbed her phone and messaged her friend, Georgia.
She couldn’t forget the task Cassia had given her.
“Georgia, I need a favor.”
Georgia had just gotten home when she saw the message.
A few days earlier, her brother, Kaleb, had told her Danica had been kidnapped and developed depression afterward–but thankfully recovered two months later.
“Danica, congrats! You’re better!” Georgia texted back, sitting on the edge of her bed with her legs swinging.
