“You’ve lost your guaranteed admission to Vego University,” Vance said. He pushed himself up with his hands on his knees and turned to leave.
At the door, his hand paused on the handle.
“Now the only thing you can rely on is the SAT. If you can’t get into Vego University, then you’ll have to deal with the consequences yourself.”
With that, Vance pulled the door open and walked out without looking back.
Brie was left alone on the hospital bed, crying uncontrollably. She cried hard and for a long time, until she broke down completely. The next day, Brie was discharged and returned to school.
In a private room at an upscale club, Tyne had just finished entertaining a client. She went to the bathroom and rinsed herself off. After her shower, her phone buzzed.
“Task completed. Brie was hospitalized for three days and missed the competition completely.”
Tyne replied, “No one saw you do it, right?”
“Nope. We’re professionals. Even the cleanup was spotless. Even if the cops look into it later, they won’t be able to trace it back to you.”
Tyne looked at the message and smiled. Her bright red lips curved upward.
She stood in front of the mirror and picked up a comb to fix her hair.
Her mood finally felt better.
Beep, beep, beep!
Another message came in.
“The total is 10,000 dollars. Thanks for the business.”
After Tyne transferred the money, she lay gracefully on her side on the bed and sent a message to Kaleb.
“Thanks for the info. That bitch had missed the math competition. She’ll never get that guaranteed spot now.”
Kaleb was sitting in the classroom, phone in hand, reading Tyne’s message.
He turned his head and looked & Brie.
Her eyes were empty. Her face showed no emotion. Even her movements were slow and stiff, like a robot.
If you looked closely, you could see that the injuries on her arm from the car accident still hadn’t fully healed.

Her eyes were bloodshot, and tear tracks covered both cheeks. It was obvious she had cried many times.
The blow she had taken was huge.
Looking at Brie, Kaleb had only one word in his mind–sweet!

The car accident had been serious. Not only did the news report it, but the Zrario High forums were full of posts about it too.
Everyone knew that the ten students on that bus had lost their chance to attend the Vrastin competition–a rare and valuable opportunity.
When classmates noticed how lost and broken Brie looked, many of them felt sympathy,
“Poor thing!”
“Yeah. She worked so hard for so long. Who could handle something like that happening all of a sudden?”
“She must be in a lot of pain. She really needs comfort right now.”
“Well, I’d say life is fair. If you do too many bad things, karma will catch up with you. What happened to Brie is just karma. Nothing to feel sorry for.”
Hearing most people sympathize with Brie, Kaleb rolled his eyes.
But he stayed silent.
In the final mock exam, Brie stayed depressed and unfocused for a long time. She never fully recovered. Her grades dropped badly, falling to just within the top 100 of the entire grade.
Cassia stayed firmly in first place. Kaleb remained second.
The real surprise was Danica. She jumped all the way up to third place in the entire grade.
In such a short time, Danica had gone from the bottom to third place.
Her results were even better than before she had ever been depressed. They were shocking.
A crowd quickly gathered around her.
“Danica, you’re amazing! We attend the same classes. How on earth did your grades improve so fast?”
“Yeah! Can you tell us exactly how you study? No matter what I do, my scores won’t go up! I’m freaking out!”
People were baffled. Danica used to have terrible grades. She even skipped evening study sessions all the time. Now her scores had shot up like she had some kind of cheat code.
They all wanted to know her secret.
Danica glanced at Cassia, who was lying on her desk, playing on her phone.
